Well everybody, it's that time of month again, UFC PPV time! This pay per view's gonna be huge because for the first time ever the UFC will crown a female champion as "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey who's been seemingly unstoppable goes up against a hungry challenger; Liz Carmouche. Also, Lyoto Machida looks to prove that he still belongs at the top of the Light Heavyweight ladder when he goes one on one with vicious knockout artist Dan Henderson. Other fights on the main card include former WEC Bantamweight Champion Urijah Faber Vs Ivan Menjivar in a rematch from 2006 in which Urijah Faber won by disqualification. Court McGee drops down to the welterweight division to take on Josh Neer in what could possiply be a fight where the loser leaves town. And Josh Koscheck makes his return to the octagon to welcome back a returning veteran we haven't seen in 9 years, Robbie Lawler... Ladies and gentlemen, this is my UFC 157 prediction show!
Hello everyone, I'm Alex Cochrane here giving you my first UFC Pay Per View Prediction thread. Ronda Rousey made herself a household name in Women's MMA while tearing through the Bantamweight Division in Strikeforce, all with first round armbars. This Saturday, she will look to extend her undefeated streak into the octagon and become the first woman to wear UFC gold. Her opponent; Liz Carmouche a seasoned newcomer who has finished all but one of her fights and has demonstrated a finishing ability just about anywhere the fight goes. Also on the card, Lyoto Machida looks to defend his family name and style as he goes one on one with former Pride Middleweight and Welterweight Champion; Dan Henderson. And also on the card, my man, the California Kid Urijah Faber looks to put a stamp on a 2006 victory when he faces "The Pride of El Salvador" Ivan Menjivar. It's live it's on Pay Per View it's UFC 157: Rousey Vs Carmouche! Let's take a look at my predictions for this Saturday's fights.
Women's Bantamweight (135 lbs) Championship: Ronda Rousey Vs Liz Carmouche
"Rowdy" Ronda Rousey has been seemingly unstoppable as of late. After dismantling 2 unfortunate competitors in the Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight division (all with first round armbars), Rousey cemented her claim by taking the title from Meisha Tate than defending it against Sarah Kaufman both in the same fashion. And with Rousey saying that she doesn't feel like she's the current champion until she beats Carmouche, you can tell that she is most certainly taking this every bit as serious as she has in her last 6 fights. Liz Carmouche is certainly nobody to count out though, the Team Hurricane Awesome prospect brings a devastating ground and pound game that Rousey has never been brought with, and if she can keep the champ on her back. There is a good chance that we could see a new UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion. With that being said, Rousey has been on an absolute tear, and as much as the skill set presents a unique challenge for Rousey; If this one hits the ground, I see Carmouche suffering the same fate as the champ's last 6 opponents.
Prediction: Ronda Rousey by Submission (Armbar) in Rd. 1
Light Heavyweight (205 lbs) Bout: Lyoto Machida Vs Dan Henderson
For those who choose to stand with Lyoto Machida, usually the outcome is very deadly. After seeing his last fight with Ryan Bader ending in a devastating fashion, Henderson would not be the smartest to stand and strike with the Shotokan Karate black belt. However if there is one skill that Dan Henderson excels at, it's making it a dirty nasty fight, as made evident from his octagon return against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua back at UFC 139. Ring rust will be a factor seeing as Henderson has not fought since than, in which I believe he will constantly engage Machida on the feet. If Henderson has any chance of winning this fight, he will need to close the distance of Machida's wide stance, cut him off using the cage and take him down and rain down ground and pound. But realisticlly speaking with Henderson's will to be a crowd pleaser, he will probably look to keep this on the feet. Leaving this in favour of Machida who will score a unanimous judge's decision.
Prediction: Lyoto Machida by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Bantamweight (135 lbs) Bout: Urijah Faber Vs Ivan Menjivar
This isn't the first time that these two have met in competition. Back in 2006, Urijah Faber faced Ivan Mejivar in TKO Major League, resulting in Urijah Faber getting his hand raised by after Menjivar threw an illegal kick with Faber's hands on the ground. However a lot has changed since than, Faber's been a former WEC Featherweight Champion and wants nothing more than to taste championship gold as of yet. However, even with all the chances he's been unsuccessful, coming up short in all four of his last title bids with his last being his second attempt to become the UFC Bantamweight Champion. Upon arriving in the UFC, Tristar gym trainee Ivan Menjivar went on a 3 fight before falling to Mike Easton at UFC 148. He bounced back this November at UFC 154 in Montreal submitting Azamat Gashimov in the first round and earning Submission of the Night honors; his second out of his last three performances. Urijah Faber has the hometown advantage being a hometown hero, and considering his disappointment over his last performance. We'll look to see the best California kid yet in this one. I hate to dissapoint my fellow country residents, but I'm going with Faber on this one.
Prediction: Urijah Faber by Submission (Guillotine Choke) in Rd. 2
Welterweight (170lbs) Bout: Court McGee Vs Josh Neer
How the hell this one made it to the main card is beyond me. Both fighters are coming off absolutely disappointing performances in their last bouts and are on two fight losing streaks. This bout should seriously be on the undercard, but than again I guess there's a reason why I'm not Joe Silva, eh. Ultimate Fighter winner Court McGee is making the move down to the welterweight divison after coming off a a pair of unanimous decision losses in the middleweight division to Costa Philippou and Nick Ring, failing to avenge his lone loss on his season Ultimate Fighter which he ultimately won. His opponent is also coming off a pair of dissapointing losses. Back in May Josh Neer was knocked out by Mike Pyle with just 4 seconds left in the first round and failed to rebound when he was choked unconscious in just 45 seconds by Justin Edwards. This may possiply be a loser leaves town situation, seeing as both men are desparate for a win. I believe experience will play a large factor in this one as Josh Neer will pick Court McGee apart on the feet, en route to a razor thin decision.
Prediction: Josh Neer by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Welterweight (170 lbs) Bout: Josh Koscheck Vs Robbie Lawler
If you're a fan of knockouts, this one's for you. Between these two; Josh Koscheck and Robbie Lawler have a combined total of 21 finishes coming by some form of knockout, and both men have only be knocked out themselves once. Josh Koscheck is recently coming off a razor thin split decision against top contender Johnny Hendricks at UFC on Fox last May and is looking for a large rebound. One thing we have seen in the past is that a motivated Josh Koscheck is most certainly a deadly one except when he fights Georges St-Pierre.. only cuz Georges is the man. Robbie Lawler; a true veteran of the game is no stranger to the octagon and will make his first appearance in almost 9 years. I see this one being contested on the feet due to both men's ability to trade. However, I believe Koscheck's powerful right hand will be too much to handle and we'll see a brutal early knockout to open this one up.
Prediction: Josh Koscheck by KO/TKO in Rd. 2
