The first trees donated by organizers of the Sept. 11 memorial in New York have been planted at the Flight 93 site in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The National Park Service calls the gift of 40 sweet gum trees a symbol of the ties between the memorials for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The (Somerset) Daily American says three of the trees were planted Saturday in a ceremony at the site near Shanksville, Pa. The rest will be planted over the next few weeks.

The trees were initially given by the state of Maryland in 2006 to the World Trade Center memorial, but were not planted due to a landscape design change.

Forty passengers and crew died after fighting with hijackers aboard the plane, which crashed in a field.
