The main event featured flyweight ace Ian "Uncle Creepy" McCall, a WEC vet who was coming off a win over former # 1-ranked flyweight Jussier "Formiga" Da Silva at TPF 8. McCall's opponent was Dustin Ortiz, who entered the fight undefeated at 7-0 and was coming off a TKO win on the undercard of Strikeforce Challengers 13.
From the very start, McCall showed off a very impressive and varied striking game that Ortiz had little answer for after a few minutes. Ortiz, who was teased by fans cageside for his resemblance to Carrot Top, landed a few kicks and a solid right hand early and strafed McCall with some elbows against the cage, but Ian landed more shots standing and scored a late takedown which ended with McCall briefly in mount. After that though, McCall totally took over.
"Uncle Creepy" ramped up his offensive output in the second, making Ortiz chase him and dictating the pace. After tagging him with everything from high kicks to superman punches, McCall finally dropped Ortiz with a big right hand late in the second and jumped straight into mount. Ortiz was very resilient though, and some good reffing by Josh Rosenthal ensured there would be a third round.
The third was all McCall. He threw everything but the kitchen sink at Ortiz, landing a pretty spinning back elbow and some beautiful combos. Ortiz lasted to the bell, but McCall had his hand raised after securing a 30-27 decision on all cards. Frankly, the second round could have been 10-8. McCall is for real, and he's making his case to be named the top flyweight in the world.
The co-main went down under some strange circumstances. Featherweight champion Isaac De Jesus was stripped of his title after not making weight the day before, but oddly his opponent Russ Miura could still win the title if he defeated De Jesus. Unfortunately for him, he did not. After scoring an awesome throw takedown and latching on a dangerous armbar attempt, the fight went back to the feet. De Jesus showed off his formidable striking by slipping a Miura punch and destroying him with a counter right hand that crumpled Miura to the mat. De Jesus won by KO at 2:52 of round 1. Despite being stripped of his title, it was a very impressive perfomance from Isaac.
A fight between former UFC fighters Efrain Escudero and Fabricio Camoes was more entertaining than expected, with Camoes offering up a very solid hands and leg/body kicks while outgrappling Escudero over the first two rounds. Escudero finally stepped up in the third scoring multiple takedowns and landed a big flying knee that stunned Morongo, but it was too little too late. Camoes picked up a 29-28 decision on all cards.
The rest of the top fights were less than spectacular. Gerald "Hurricane" Harris threw single punches and wasn't willing to engage much early against Anthony Ruiz, but he slowly turned it on and made the fight a bit lopsided by the third. Harris took a unanimous decision.
Mamoru Yamaguchi's TPF debut against Kevin Dunsmoor wasn't pretty, but five seconds of offense was all he neeed. After being pushed against the cage for the entire first half of the fight, Mamoru finally got some separation and quickly landed a short left that separated Dunsmoor for consciousness. And finally, Wanderlei Silva disciple Jorge "Lil' Monster" Lopez outstruck and countered his way to a unanimous decision victory over Waachiim Spiritwolf.
