Just in a perfect world, the Continental belt should have never existed and this would be for the international title lol

But the belt being designed for the rivalry also leads me to believe once whoever wins this match loses it, that one will probably disappear, the international will keep going, and the Continental will be brought back as it has always been for the tournament (maybe they do something different here but probably not tbh). Would also be a reason why you don't disappear the two original belts when the unified one is actually the temporary design
This makes the most sense, but if I was booking, it would replace the continental and we would still have the international.

In fairness, the carrying around 3 belts thing fits perfectly in Jeff's explanation if you factor in the assumption that Tony just loves his belts and doesn't want to retire one visually lol

Usually both lineages don't merge in unification tho, I agree they should, but sadly one of both is always retired officially and the actual lineage continues as one or a new belt. WWE was actually doing it the first way after Cody beat Roman, still recognizing him as both champs just with one belt, but then they retconned it for the Cena record to not be confusing to be the same as usual lol can't say I blame them in that case tho, it was a mess
Is that a WWE thing or a most promotion thing (curious). As I thought, for example , the new iwgp thing they made years ago was both the v4 and the Intercontinental. I'm guessing it's just the v4 lineage and they killed the Intercontinental?

In this case I also think it's just really easy to merge lineages as the c2 had like what , three holders ? 2?

I take that back. In my perfect world, it would replace both the continental and the TNT and that way the unified name would still make sense. And the International title remains in the TNT’s place.

Should’ve been a trophy or a briefcase and not even called the continental title at all. It should’ve just been something you won for winning the continental classic and then you were able to use that to get a title shot at revolution.
In 2025 TK said today he went back to not doing ideas he doesn't fully believe in.

I feel he decided he listened to others on this title n decided to do what he thinks is best for the future n killed the belt idea

They actually retired both and it’s a brand new lineage. This is why I was questioning what we were doing here.

And yes, I agree before you reply that I thought that was a dumb idea too to have a brand new when it’s starting in 2021 instead of the history of your V4.

The official history starts at the first champion of the new belt for IWGP. The V4 lineage ended at merger, and all the others since it was actually one lineage lol. It's considered a new belt and history but with the "legacy" of both the other two, it's a scam

Yeah the conventional way would have just been to continue the heavyweight lineage and retire the IC, not both

See this is why I was wondering what we were doing when he said he was not retiring the titles. I was confused because traditionally the dominant title carries on the lineage and the other belt lineage retires or you do a new Japan does and retire them both when you’re introducing a brand new named championship, which is kind of what AEW was doing because it’s not gonna continue with either name.

Wikipedia is usually a good reference for title histories, usually when shit looks weird on there, I go check and it's bc the company just did some weird shit lol and yeah it has the current IWGP world title as a new one, not just a new design or rename. The original one doesn't have the "world" it's just IWGP Heavyweight and it is retired

I'm just baffled you would end the legacy of the v4 for a butterfly belt
I don’t actually hate the new design, but I do agree with you that retiring the lineage makes no sense of your top belt. WWE has done this a couple times with tags and women’s but why would you retire your top belt’s lineage and also yes, the V4 did look better. I just don’t hate the new one.

You can technically change the name and design but keep the title history, look at what TNA did with the Global/Legends/whatever the fuck they named it lol

So really the point is, have fun with the clusterfuck of wrestling titles and these nerd discussions when we get these every couple years or so bc they're inevitable lol shit never makes sense
