Thoughts on the Roman Reigns & John Cena segment?

Um, give it time?? I mean this is only the beginning of their feud.

I can't give it time because they ruined it from the start with the John Cena hypocrisy and lot of errors in the promo. Picture in 2011 instead of The Rock having Lex Luger with his Lex Express returning to WWE and confronting John Cena what a lousy babyface he is.
This is not some storyline like nWo Hollywood vs nWo Wolfpac or Sting vs Hollywood Hogan where it started great, we gave it time but in the end it was a disappointment, this feud is a disappointment from the start.

The problem with the segment is that Cena was acting cocky like he is some beloved face from the past like Stone Cold, The Rock, Undertaker, Ric Flair etc. who returned to Raw to criticize the current face of the company. In reality Cena was criticizing Reigns for the same bullshit Cena was criticized for. It's like watching John Cena using a time machine to travel back in the past to berate John Cena 2007.
It would be alright if Cena did cut a promo like "I've been through the same bullshit like you with the boos and instead of learning from my mistakes you are lazy, not changing and only hoping to get some respect 10 years later because you would be then a veteran" or "Trust me whatever you do you will not force the fans to cheer you, I know that from experience so stop trying to get cheers at my expense" or something like that but the point of the promo was something like "They don't boo you for the same reason they booed me. They booed me because of this and that but the reason why they boo you is because you suck".
No they booed you Cena for the same reason they boo Reigns, because you also suck as a corporately created failure as a face of the company.
What's the point of a part timer who sucked as a full timer telling the current full timer he sucks?
The only reason why the fans believe Cena looked better in the promo and owned Reigns is because Cena is now a part timer who will maybe in the next 5 years have only 20 matches so he isn't the main problem anymore so it's easy for him to mock Reigns because the fans will ignore his mistakes and will focus only on the full timers who they don't like.

Only watched the abridged youtube version WWE posted since in general, that's the only way I consume wrestling anymore. I liked it but I wish it wasn't so transparent in just echoing the complaints of the viewer. It wasn't so bad with John Cena, since his character has been more woven into the issues he was taking with Roman, namely the shot at him treating the United States Championship as a demotion fit in line with Cena's character. But Roman? I don't know, maybe I haven't watched enough of his promos or maybe it's just the terminology, but hearing him talk about Cena "burying young talent" is just blatantly parroting a line. I don't buy for a second that Roman Reigns the character cares about it, but having the two controversial top guys insulting each-other with their critics comments makes for good TV. You can just look at the viewings and the fact that it's still trending on youtube for proof of that. Heard Roman was worse in the full thing, like he forgot a line or something but he was fine here. Though yeah, Cena killed him but that was always going to happen. Of all the top guys in the company's history, Roman is the only one who I don't think is anywhere near the best on the mic during his time. And yeah, I'm looking forward to the match.

Actually yes, the promos of The Rock in the John Cena vs The Rock feud worked so well because it was a beloved babyface, former star of the company who returned to confront the unpopular face of the company. The Cena/Reigns segment on the other hand is like watching Lex Luger telling Diesel that he was a failure as the face of the WWE. I know what they try to create with the Cena/Reigns promo and their "feud" and match but it doesn't make sense, "we suck both but you suck more" or what?

That Vince Russo guy? You mean that Vince Russo guy who worked for WWE during an era where you had 2 top stars of the company where the fans couldn't decide who to cheer for even when one of them was a heel, two legends who put on great promos where both tried to prove on the mic who is better and still couldn't decide because the fans in every arena were 50% Austin and 50% Rock..
Fast forward 16-18 years and you have the face of the company of the last 10 years in the same ring with the face of the company for the next 10 years and both had to deal with the "you both suck" chants so the best thing they can do is to put on a whiney promo "You suck" "no you suck more" because they both and the writers know that the fans could not decide who sucks more.
So I liked your post and I thank you for reminding me with the Russo comment of what WWF/E once used to be proving once again why that promo was such a failure. Thanks

First of all I think it was scripted, I know lot of people think that it wasn't (I also believed that at first) but the way wwe treating that promo, I mean they first posted the 4-min video after raw at YT as they usually do, then they posted the FULL promo, then they posted another video telling us how they are still "stunned" about reigns and cenas getting "brutally honest with each other", I mean, you know Vince, if it was unscripted he wouldn't have promoted that promo so much. Its just my deduction I don't know the truth.

Second, even if it was scripted it was one hell of a promo, because it does felt real they addressed all that we have been asking for (or trolling) over the internet, Cena's heel turn, Cena burying talent, Reigns cutting bad promos, Reigns being Cena 2.0 It felt like there was a real heat between those two and thats great. That was definetely one of the best promos of this year (maybe decade) if not THE best.

Man I'm late to this but that segment was purely fucking amazing and Cena demolished Reigns, truly shows how great Cena is on the mic
Dude was speaking the truth out there haha, but I know for a fact that Roman has gotten better on the mic but he still has a long way to go but he isn't as bad as everyone thinks. This is coming from a fan who's never really been a reigns supporter

Nevertheless, some of the stuff Cena said was absolutely fire
