Tbf a lot of Southerners at the time believed so too, with their quotes about "The Blood of the Cavaliers Flows Through Our Veins".

Southerners tried so hard post-war to make everything seem like an extension of both the Revolution and the English Civil Wars.

Yeah they called Lincoln a king too. A guy I went to college with loved pointing out that a lot of the anti-Trump rhetoric during his first term was pretty similar if you cherry picked the quotes to what confederates said about Lincoln. Which I would have given more credence too if he didn't just have a weird Lincoln agenda in general, he hated that guy

@Barry Poppins Most accurate attempt to map the Roman road system so far and just like all the others that have come before it.... it's so many more roads than we thought

Speaking of Rome btw, there's a really interesting period following the fall of the Western Empire where the city itself becomes a veritable ghost town with like less than 50,000 residents for the town that's supposed to house a million people. The city never reached a million people again until 1936.

It wasnt near a million for a good bit prior to that too though right? I thought it had been in decline for awhile after the capital moved which was well before the western empire declined.

Related to that though, it's fascinating seeing what the colosseum was used for after as well. It became almosr a holy site for Christians and was used for feasts, soup kitchens and the like but almost never any form of entertainment, even small plays or anything

Yeah it was literally less than 300k in the 1870s, It didn't reach 500k until 1911. So it was under a million residents from between 300 CE until 1936 CE. That's over 1600 years, which is just abour 3/4s the length Rome in its various forms lasted.

So I've been thinking, Chris mentioned a while ago about the 1st World War being a glorified European conflict, but I've been thinking of alternate names for all the major wars of the 16th-20th Century.

Like instead of "The Great War", I think it should be something like "The War of Empires".

World War 2 should be known maybe as "The Fascist War" or "The War of Genocides".
