Three scientists based in the U.S. won the Nobel Prize in chemistry Wednesday for their work on quantum dots — tiny particles just a few atoms in diameter that can release very bright colored light and whose applications in every day life include electronics and medical imaging.

The stupid thing with this whole speaker debacle is it’s not even the GOP as a whole that decided to torpedo itself for actually keeping the government open, it was a handful of absolute morons that are still left over from the MAGA faction and they knew they could get away with it because Democrats aren’t any smarter. It was about 10 Republicans and 200 Democrats that voted to ouster McCarthy for the crime of crossing the aisle. Why? Because Democrats are just as stupid and greedy thinking if they oust McCarthy they can finally elect a Democrat Speaker despite still not having a majority to be able to do it. They’re not going to get any Republican votes for Jeffries. They’re just going to waste everyone’s time again.

Any guesses on how many failed votes we get up to this time? I’m thinking it crosses 20 this time. If Democrats used their brains, they’d find a Republican they believe they could actually work with and put their full support there and after a few failed votes, enough Republicans would vote for them and elect the next Speaker. You have to use your minority power smartly. You can’t override the majority for a Democrat, but you can hand select whichever Republican you think might be the most willing to work with you for the country.

It’s amazing these hooligans in the Republican Party pull this nonsense now when GOP needed to win over moderates and independents most heading into the 2024 election cycle. They shot themselves in the foot and can’t blame anyone but themselves when there’s another blue wave. The people in Gaetz and company’s districts need to think long and hard about this debacle and what it probably cost them and their party when their next election is due.

Wait was this so stupid that even MTG realized that it was dumb? I’m not seeing her name in the small list of who Republicans voted against McCarthy.

The thing that hurts my brain the most is to see these people on Twitter celebrating ousting McCarthy as a sign that they just ended the war in Ukraine like somehow just because we stopped giving Ukraine defense money. Russia was going to just go oh OK cool we can pull out now.

I am in the camp that a functioning government is good so celebrating one that is not is weird. I am also not going to celebrate projections that the GOP is gonna implode due to infighting, I feel like taking that approach is mighty cocky. regardless you should never underestimate or dismiss your opponent or rivals. I also wish both parties would do things that benefit their constituents instead of just trying to fuck each other over in hopes of later votes on a future election. thats garbage, your job is to serve your constituents, not be in 24 7 election mode. shit is so wack

I agree. I actually think this makes both sides look incredibly stupid. Although I will say 99% of the people they voted no on ousting were Republicans. I just don’t understand why Democrats thought ousting McCarthy was a good idea when the reason that vote came up in the first place was because he he compromise on a lot of issues to make sure the Democrats are comfortable passing it so I don’t understand what crime he committed in the Democrats eyes. Just weird situation.

And yeah, the GOP is not going to disintegrate. Probably lose more seats in the general election next year probably. Because this does not look good, if the GOP was smarter, they continue to fight back on the remnants of the Maga movement which I think they’ve started to do because even Ron DeSantis has been talking about whole Lotta shit about Donald Trump‘s administration lately.

At this point there's very few solutions to politicians being in 24/7 Election Mode other than stringent term limits, raising the House of Representative term length, returning Senate seats back into the hands of the State, banning private donations to election campaigns, and additionally banning Political Action Committees from buying politicians or influencing laws/votes.

Like put into perspective the fact that Representatives in Congress have a term length of two fucking years. What shit are you going to do in Congress with two years in office? At the very least, up it to equal with either the President of the United States, or a United States Senator, at 4/6 years a piece.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m positive that the reason why it’s only two years for the House of Representatives is because the districts are based on populations and those are continually changing.

What I think is absolutely maddening though is that a lot or if not most governors only have a two year stent. What is that?

The original logic for why is something that makes sense on the surface like this yeah. It's just an issue bc unless you're in a district that never votes away from their party (which there are plenty), you're campaigning for literally half your term instead of actually legislating

I think this is a whole can of worms bc state governments give different powers to governors anyway. Like I know in Texas for instance, the Lt. governor is really more powerful than the governor
