The rural south is literally so far behind, I don't think most people realize it lol when one of my friends from college was gonna stay over at my parents place one spring break with a group of us his mom was worried and was like "do his parents know you're black????" And he thought that was absurd but I was like eh thats a pretty legitimate question for her to ask without knowing me lol

Family is who you make it out to be. Just because you may be related by blood, does not make them family. Anybody who has ever been kicked out of their homes for being different (I.E. coming out) can attest that they are no longer your family when their hate and ignorance overtakes any sense of love they have for an individual.

By ignoring COVID-19 and pretending it doesn't exist, they prove their ignorance flies in the face of not only reality, but any kind of love they had for that particular family member.

I do not consider my racist brother my family member, because what he has said, what he stands for, and who he follows like a fucking lapdog. He is a hateful, spiteful individual, and I consider my best friends more of my family than him, even if he's related to me by blood.

TL/DR: Family isn't tied by blood. It's tied by the bonds of friendship and love.

Yeah I could not disagree more with your conclusion while agreeing with the sentiment lol i don't think you need to consider close friends "family" to get the point across that you're closer with them than blood relatives. I think people just need to accept that you don't have to support and love someone just bc they're family. But I'm not arguing the semantics of family if you want to say your brother is no longer a family member lmao it doesn't change anything for the purpose of this convo for either of us
