According to a new report, Dwayne Johnson's new video game film will be Call of Duty.

Earlier this month, in an interview with Men's Journal, Johnson briefly mentioned he was working on bringing "one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen".

It's now been reported that the game is Call of Duty, according to sources close to movie news site Giant Freakin Robot.

It's currently unknown what the story or setting of the film will be. With the first game taking place in World War 2 but later games moving to modern warfare and into the future, there are plenty of options.

Further, Johnson is said to be in talks about the new film but his role hasn't been confirmed. His interview does suggest he's confident about getting a role, but the film could go ahead with or without him.

A film based on Call of Duty has been in the works since 2015. A report in 2018 suggested that Sicario 2 director Stefano Sollima was in negotiations to helm the film.

Now, with Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, perhaps talks about a Call of Duty film have been refreshed - with Johnson starring in a leading role.

The Rock has been hinting at a video game related project for a film, and if they are making a COD film then having him in it makes sense. Seeing as he's such a bankable action star, and it fits the over-the-top nature of his roles

Yeah most video game films fall flat, but I have no doubt it'll smash the box office. COD still has quite the name value, and if you put The Rock in there too it should do well. I'd watch it out of sheer curiosity probably :lol

You could make a great meta action film that's almost Starship Troopers lite if you lean into how much those games are department of defense propaganda.

If it was me I'd take inspiration from the Modern Warfare series which is by far the best one

I actually think The Rock is the perfect person for the role. Thing is, Call of Duty can do without big box attractions like The Rock. Call of Duty film is going to SELL OUT tickets in theaters. Calling it now.

Call of Duty to date sold at LEAST 400 Million units or installs (from downloads).

Doom is kinda different. You just can't plop in some generic soldier and expect the film to be good. But The Rock played Hobbs, and FIT into Fast and the Furious franchise. With the SHiELD-style look, that soldier look.

He'll be fine in Call of Duty. He just needs to be someone OTHER than Captain Price or Ghost.

I feel like video games don’t have the best track record when it comes to film adaptations so I have low expectations…

But it stars The Rock so it’ll still make $1 Billion

That's true. Mortal Kombat is just one in a million that did "well." And it didn't need many headline stars. Most stars were made after Mortal Kombat. Shang Tsung is the only actor that was famous, and got bigger after MK.

Call of Duty can have that kind of casting, and still make more than a Billion. I'm not kidding. Just put a commercial of Call of Duty film, and people will line up for the film. Simple as that. Like I said 400 Million copies sold.

Warzone by itself is 70 Million players. Do the math.

Video game geeks don't go to movies based off a game.....Mortal Kombat was played by millions and that didn't affect anything for the box office.

Actually, I did. The theater was packed in 1995.

And I keep telling you guys; Call of Duty is the casual market. C'mon, man.
