TIMELINE of RECENT NWA EVENTS

May 2017: Billy Corgan, frontman of Smashing Pumpkins, buys the name, rights, trademarks and championship belts of NWA from R. Bruce Tharpe after an attempt at purchasing Impact Wrestling ended in turmoil.

October 2017: The NWA is officially sold to Billy Corgan and his production company Lightning One, Inc. Dave Lagana is appointed to assist Corgan lead the company, as Vice President of Lightning One, Inc. and the NWA. All NWA Championships, other than the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, are vacated and ties are cut with affiliated promotions.

December 2017: Nick Aldis begins his first reign as NWA World Heavyweight Champion, defeating Tim Storm at CZW’s Cage of Death event.

July 2018: NWA begins partnership with Ring of Honor. Nick Aldis defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Flip Gordon at Honor for All in Nashville. This partnership would lead to NWA being featured on the upcoming indy supershow produced by The Elite - All In.

September 2018: Cody Rhodes defeats Nick Aldis at All In to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

October 2018: A busy month for NWA. The company launches a weekly YouTube series called “10 Pounds of Gold” that follows the happenings in NWA, primarily focusing on the World Heavyweight Title. The NWA also puts on their biggest show post-reboot with the NWA 70th Anniversary Show. Willie Mack defeats Sam Shaw in the finals of a tournament to crown the new National Heavyweight Champion and Nick Aldis defeats Cody to regain the World Heavyweight Championship.

April 2019: NWA collaborates with ROH to revive the Crockett Cup. Brody King and PCO of Villain Enterprises defeat Royce Isaacs and Thomas Latimer to win the vacant NWA World Tag Team Championship. Nick Aldis defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Marty Scurll.

May 2019: Colt Cabana defends the National Heavyweight Championship against recent NWA signee James Storm at ROH/NJPW War of the Worlds 2019 - Day 4. The match ends in a time limit draw. Afterwards, The Briscoes come out and attack Colt Cabana, insulting the NWA for disqualifying them at the Crockett Cup.

June 2019: Colt Cabana is forced to pull out of a tag team match at ROH Best in the World 2019. Eli Drake debuts and takes his place, teaming with Nick Aldis against The Briscoes. The match ends in a no contest when a brawl spills into the crowd. Eli Drake ends up brawling with James Storm while The Briscoes double team Nick Aldis. Cabana is forced to watch from commentary with an injury. Marty Scurll comes down after the match to help Nick Aldis to the back. The next night at ROH TV tapings, James Storm baits Cabana into defending his title, and defeats Cabana to become the new National Heavyweight Championship.

July 2019 (start of project): Billy Corgan looks to capitalize on momentum built and shape NWA into a bona fide promotion once again, building up a larger core roster and working towards a broadcast deal. For the time being, “NWA Ten Pounds of Gold” on YouTube will be updated to resemble more of a traditional wrestling program. Rather than featuring mostly recaps and interviews, the program will now feature more exclusive matches and promos taped that week. Arn Anderson is signed as the top agent for the company and Todd Kenely is hired to be the “Voice of NWA” going forward.

PROJECT OUTLINE

I decided to start this BTB after beginning a new game in TEW 2016. I just figured since I would probably be hitting the game pretty hard, it might be fun to do a little diary based off what happens. I am actually working on a different BTB right now which I plan to put quite a bit of detail and effort into. This project will be more secondary. It might go for a while, I might drop it if I don’t have the time for it. The results will be pretty basic, especially starting off. The goal is just to build NWA up to eventually surpass MLW, ROH, Impact, AEW and WWE (in that order). We’ll see about that. Do feel free to leave your feedback as we go. Hopefully we can have a fun little time here. Thanks.

I thought about doing a current NWA at one time since they have potential to do something if they act on it.

I'm looking forward to what you do with it.

NWA 10 POUNDS OF GOLD
E. S. Rose Park :: Nashville, TN

PRE-SHOW

In a dark match that didn’t make it to YouTube, multi-time NWA regional title holder Jeff Connelly defeated local competitor Alex Chamberlain in just under 10 minutes with the Connelly Crossface. Connelly fared pretty well and got a favorable reaction from the fans, possibly due to competing in the Tennessee area for years leading up to his debut here for the newly reminted NWA.

MAIN SHOW

THE CHAMPION’S ADDRESS

This week’s installment of 10 Pounds of Gold begins with NWA World Heavyweight Champion “The National Treasure” Nick Aldis sitting behind a desk, watching a replay of ROH Best in the World on a tablet. He watches intently as The Briscoes drive him through a table and leave him lying. He watches as friend turned rival Marty Scurll comes down to the ring to check on him, then help him to the back. He puts the tablet away in the top drawer of the desk and refocuses on the camera. He states that wrestling is a cut throat industry and he understands that as the champion of this organization, he’ll always have a target on his back, and he’s fine with that. The Briscoes will get what’s coming to them before long. Aldis states that he doesn’t want to linger on the attack he was on the receiving end of, and rather, he wants to thank Marty Scurll. Aldis says that he understands that Scurll is a businessman. In fact, he knows Scurll better than just about anyone in the business. They’ve had battles throughout the years, and sometimes things turned ugly. He calls back to the Crockett Cup months back where Aldis defended his title against Scurll in a bloody battle. He says that a lesser man would be bitter and resentful after the loss, and given Scurll’s reputation as “The Villain”, many were probably surprised to see Marty come out to help him after the attack, but Aldis wasn’t surprised. He knows that deep down Scurll knows right from wrong, he knows that Scurll has a respect for this industry like few others, and he knows that Scurll will go down as an all time great before all is said and done. Aldis says he only hopes that Scurll will soon wake up and realize that the path he is going down with Villain Enterprises is not right and that Scurll owes it to himself to change his villainous ways before they consume him. With that, Aldis stands from his rolling chair, grabs the 10 Pounds of Gold off his desk and heads out.

DEVYN NICOLE vs. ASPYN ROSE

In the first match of this episode, new NWA signee Devyn Nicole defeated Aspyn Rose in 9 minutes with a hammerlock DDT. Devyn Nicole was accompanied to the ring by Mr. Hughes, a suit and sunglasses wearing tank of a man known for serving as a bodyguard to several wrestlers in WCW, ECW and WWE. Hughes trained Nicole as a pro wrestler and played the role of a cornerman here, coaching up Nicole before and after the match. Nicole established herself as a heel using some dirty tactics such as hair pulling and eye rakes to gain the upperhand.

***

JAY BRISCOE WANTS A FIGHT

The next segment sees Jay Briscoe heading down to the ring solo to a chorus of boos. Jay takes a second to run down Nick Aldis and NWA, saying that anyone who has a problem with how he and his brother handle their business can get handled just like Aldis did. But he then redirects his attention to Eli Drake who debuted at Best in the World as Nick’s partner, and who he brawled with in the crowd that night before the match got thrown out. He calls Drake a punk and the latest “NWA bitch”! He calls out Drake out to settle the score tonight and sure enough, Eli Drake’s music hits and out comes the man himself. He does his signature “E-LI-DRAKE” taunt and takes a mic simply to say that Jay is on!

JAY BRISCOE vs. ELI DRAKE

In the main event of this week’s episode, Eli Drake defeated Jay Briscoe by disqualification when both Mark Briscoe and James Storm crashed the party, attacking Eli Drake after a hard hitting 15 minutes of action. Just as Drake was closing in on a victory, Mark and Storm hopped the barricade and ambushed Drake. After the match was thrown out, the beating continued and culminated with The Briscoes holding Drake up while Storm smashed a beer bottle over his head! The episode comes to a close with a close-up shot of Drake lying on the mat, a stream of blood coming down from his forehead to the canvas.

Week 2, July 2019
NWA 10 POUNDS OF GOLD
Reagan Field :: Murray, Kentucky

PRE-SHOW

This week’s taping of NWA 10 Pounds of Gold took place at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky, marking the second week in a row where the show was filmed at a baseball diamond. The show before the show featured two dark matches that didn’t make it to YouTube.

***

First match on the dockett saw Ross and Marshall, The Von Erichs defeat Mike Posey and Corey Hollis, a team known on the independents as Alabama Attitude, in just about 6 minutes. Mike Posey might be familiar to fans as the former head referee on WWE’s ECW brand. The Von Erichs didn’t have much issue handling these two though, dispatching them after a Double Claw Slam.

***

The following match featured Crimson defeating Wes Brisco in a hard fought 10 minute battle with The Mercy Kill. After the match, Crimson and Jax Dane issued a statement calling out The Briscoes in the name of the NWA.

MAIN SHOW

COLT CABANA vs. FLIP GORDON

In the opening contest this week, Colt Cabana defeated Flip Gordon of Villain Enterprises in 11 minutes with the Chicago Crab. It was a mostly dominant showing by Cabana after losing his NWA National Heavyweight Championship to James Storm amidst an injury. Villain Enterprises were notable in their absence, due to having a title match later tonight.

***

NWA's NEWEST ACQUISITION

Following the match, we are taken to the office of NWA owner Billy Corgan. He says that he’s delighted to announce the newest signing to the NWA’s women’s division, a respected and well-travelled superstar: Tenille Dashwood! Sure enough, across the desk is the Australian sensation, fresh off a run in ROH. She is wearing her signature sunglasses, as well as a nice coat and tights. She states that she has come to NWA now, not for herself and not because she has anything to prove, but because she knows that the NWA needs her! She says it’s obvious that having a champion like Allysin Kay just isn’t going to cut it for a company on the rise, and she’ll be happy to take care of that problem for Billy and the NWA. She takes the contract lying on the desk, signs the dotted line and shakes Corgan’s hand as the segments fades to an end.

***

SCURLL RESPONDS TO ALDIS

Next is a pre-taped segment. We take a look at Marty Scurll who seems to be riding in the backseat of a car, looking out of the window. He turns to look at the camera. He tells Nick Aldis that he saw the message he had for Scurll last week and as far as he’s concerned, Aldis can keep his advice. Scurll says that Aldis seems to think that since becoming NWA World Heavyweight Champion, he’s somehow above everyone and, frankly, he doesn’t appreciate being spoken to like a child. Scurll says that while he and Aldis go way back and he does respect him, pro wrestling is a business and there’s no better businessman than him. He admits that Aldis got the best of him at Crockett Cup and yes, he was there to help out Aldis after the attack by The Briscoes, but he’s still very much on the hunt for that 10 Pounds of Gold! He says that at this very moment he’s on his way to catch a flight to the UK where he’ll be competing for two world titles in the span of five days and when he’s done over there, he’ll be on the first plane back to the States to earn his way back to another shot at Aldis’ gold!

***

A MESSAGE FROM ELI DRAKE

A final segment begins, showing Eli Drake getting his forehead stitched up backstage after the attack from The Briscoes and James Storm last week. He calls the camera over to focus in on him. He issues a defiant warning to James Storm and The Briscoes as blood continues to drip down over his face, saying that he didn’t want to have to go down this route with them. He says that he tries to keep things light, he jokes around, but he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and this is their warning that come hell or high water, he’s going to even the score with them! He pushes the camera away as the segment ends.

***

Prior to the main event tonight, we are shown some highlights from a recent Ring of Honor TV episode where the NWA World Tag Team Champions PCO and Brody King suffered a loss to Rush and Dragon Lee in a non-title match up. We are then shown a backstage segment where PCO and Brody King challenged Rush and Dragon Lee to meet them in a rematch on NWA 10 Pounds of Gold where they’ll put their titles on the line! Rush and Dragon Lee accept the challenge, at which point Villain Enterprises jump them and thrash them around the backstage area before fading into the following match…

VILLAIN ENTERPRISES (c) vs. RUSH and DRAGON LEE

In this week’s main event, Villain Enterprises (PCO and Brody King) defeated Rush and Dragon Lee in 16 minutes to defend the NWA World Tag Team Championship. This match was your classic clash of styles, pitting a bruising powerhouse tag team against a high flying lucha team. In the course of the match, PCO ate a hurricanrana off the apron to the floor but Brody King was still able to hold it down for his team and finished the match with an All Seeing Eye (Cradle Shock) on Dragon Lee. After the match, Rush and Dragon Lee extended their hands to Villain Enterprises. After some teasing of accepting the olive branch, Brody King instead threw a middle finger up in their faces. Villain Enterprises headed to the back holding their belts up and taunting the fans to close the show.

NWA 10 POUNDS OF GOLD
Harmon Stadium :: Jacksonville, Florida

PRE-SHOW

At this week’s taping of NWA 10 Pounds of Gold, there was one dark match where Jazz and Misty James defeated Jessie Brooks and Aspyn Rose in 10 minutes in a women’s tag match. It was Jazz who carried the majority of the load for her team. The former NWA World Women’s Champion used her power and experience to seal the victory, forcing Aspyn Rose to tap out to the Bitch Lock. After the match, Jessie Brooks took a microphone, congratulated Jazz and challenged her to a one on one match down the line, to which Jazz agreed.

THE BRISCOES vs. THE WAR KINGS

A week back, The War Kings issued a challenged to The Briscoes, defending the honor of the NWA. This week, The Briscoes stepped up to the plate and defeated The War Kings in 10 minutes, pinning Jax Dane after a springboard Doomsday Device. The Briscoes received significant heat and decided to pile on by hitting a spike J-Driller on Crimson after the match, leaving The War Kings totally annihilated.

DON’T BUY THE HYPE

Making her first appearance on the retooled 10 Pounds of Gold this week is the NWA World Women’s Champion Allysin Kay. She stands in a hallway as a voice off camera asks her what she thinks of Tenille Dashwood signing with NWA and taking aim at her title. Kay says that she has barely knows who Dashwood is! And despite the fact that they’ve competed in many of the same places, they’ve managed to never cross paths. Kay says she doesn’t think that’s any coincidence and, in fact, Dashwood has been avoiding her for years knowing that wherever Kay is, is where the competition is. Now, Dashwood has finally exhausted all her options and come to face the music. She applauds Dashwood for finally overcoming her fears, but says that anyone who is believing the hype that Dashwood is here to “save the NWA” is in for a rude awakening! Kay walks off camera as we fade away.

***

MATT SYDAL: COMING SOON

The next segment is a vignette. We see graphics of the seven chakras flashing and then pan inside an empty gym. The lights are off and there’s a smoky environment. Some soothing music is playing faintly in the background. As we pan down from the rafters of the gym, we see a man sitting in the center of the ring with his legs crossed and palms facing upwards. As we get closer and closer it becomes clear this man is ROH, WWE, NJPW and Impact alum Matt Sydal. He is sitting with his eyes closed as the camera zooms in on his face. As the music builds up to a climax, Sydal suddenly opens his eyes, as a graphic of a third eye also opens on his forehead and the scene flashes to darkness. Then the words “MATT SYDAL: COMING SOON” appear on the screen before fading to black.

MARTY SCURLL vs. CALEB KONLEY

Following his promise last week to fight his way back into title contention, Scurll got started on the right foot in tonight’s main event. “The Villain” defeated Caleb Konley in a fast paced 13 minute bout that blended technical wrestling and high flying risk taking. Konley, a mainstay on the indies, tested Scurll in every facet but ultimately had to submit to the crossface chicken wing.

***

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Closing this week’s episode, we have an in ring segment. Nick Aldis, Colt Cabana and Eli Drake are found in the ring. Aldis has the microphone and wastes little time getting down to business. He says that Cabana, Drake and himself are all here in the NWA to restore the prestige and honor the legacy of the historic promotion, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for James Storm and The Briscoes who take every opportunity to disgrace the company and pull sneak attacks on the stars here. So, Aldis feels there’s only one way for them to settle the score. There’s three of Aldis, Cabana and Drake and there’s three of Storm and The Briscoes so he proposes that in two weeks on 10 Pounds of Gold, they have themselves a six man tag team match and just to make sure that the score is truly settled, there will be no count outs and no disqualifications! This prompts the arrival of “The Cowboy” and “Dem Boys” who stand at the entrance. Storm does take a minute to bash the three men in the ring, but ultimately, he says that they accept the challenge laid out by Aldis! The crowd pops in approval as the episode comes to a conclusion…

Week 4, July 2019

NWA 10 POUNDS OF GOLD
Thomas Stadium :: Johnson City, Tennessee

PRE-SHOW

This week’s dark match before NWA 10 Pounds of Gold saw Colt Cabana defeat Kory Chavis in 13 minutes. This week continued a growing trend of bringing in former NWA regional champions for competition. Chavis, a former NWA Wildside and NWA Anarchy Heavyweight Champion, impressed in his showing to open up the event, as he and Cabana produced a good crowd pleasing dark match for the Johnson City crowd.

RUSH vs. BRODY KING

Following up on their battle for the NWA World Tag Team Championship two weeks ago, Brody King of Villain Enterprises scored another win over Rush, defeating him in 10 minutes with the All Seeing Eye (cradle shock). Calling back to their last encounter, Brody King mockingly put out his hand for a shake, but Rush this time defiantly threw him a middle finger. King went for a clothesline but Rush ducked and dropped King with a discus forearm. King retreated up the ramp, pointing at Rush and promising he’ll pay.

A SLIGHT CHANGE IN PLANS

An ROH graphic flashes on the screen and we’re taken to a video of an ROH TV match from last week, where The Briscoes wrestled Flip Gordon and PCO of Villain Enterprises. We’re shown fan cam footage of Jay Briscoe on the floor holding his wrist and being checked on by ROH officials. We then cut to the back where Jay and Mark are speaking to NWA President Billy Corgan. We can’t hear what’s being said but Mark and Jay begin to throw a tantrum, throwing water bottles and pushing over tables. Finally, we cut The Briscoes and James Storm standing in a room. Jay Briscoe reveals he suffered a wrist dislocation and “bitch made NWA” isn’t allowing him to wrestle in the six man tag match against Aldis, Drake and Cabana next week. Mark says Billy Corgan is scared and looking out for his boys by forcing Jay out of the match. Storm says he isn’t surprised that NWA is trying to protect their little lap dogs but that’s no problem for him and The Briscoe boys. He promises that they’ve already found a new third man and will be ready to bring the fight next week on NWA Ten Pounds of Gold.

ELI DRAKE and NICK ALDIS vs. THOMAS LATIMER and ROBBIE EAGLES

In a bit of a primer for next week’s main event, Eli Drake and Nick Aldis teamed up to defeat Thomas Latimer and Robbie Eagles in 14 minutes, the latter of which was over on loan from Melbourne City Wrestling. The duo of Latimer and Eagles played the heel role well, dominating most of the match and especially domination Drake down the stretch until a hot tag to Aldis swung things back in the faces’ favor, and ultimately the match ended when Aldis defeated Latimer with a diving elbow drop. After the match, Aldis and Drake posed for the fans and headed to the back. Robbie Eagles got on the microphone to swear that the fans hadn’t seen the last of him. The show faded off air as the fans showered Eagles and Latimer in boos.
