You'll never really have a frame of reference tbh bc I was about to say "just imagine I grew up in the 80s instead of the 2000s and everything was only recently desegregated" but then I remember where you live didn't even have segregation then. The south might as well be a different country from Republicans in any other state, you'll never understand honestly. The tea party was the farthest thing from a minority where I lived

I think the Obama/McCain election was the turning point. That was the last time your average person could be assumed to be reasonable regardless of political disagreements, I was in Tea party central so I didn't even get that one. Romney/Obama wasn't that bad either but it was noticeably different still, just not everywhere
Yeah, I didn’t wanna come right out and say it, but I definitely think you were unfortunately in tea party central and those people were crazy but yeah I think that those were the end of it all. Like I said, I vividly remember having good disagreements over McCain and Obama and none of my friendships ended over it. I do think it was a little worse for Romney, which looking back on it now is crazy to think about it cause Romney was so milquetoast. It’s not even funny But definitely by the time we got to Obama second term the anti-Obama hysteria definitely had gotten a little higher, but I didn’t feel that as much over here cause I was very much in an area that was favorable to him, but even online it wasn’t the end if you disagreed.

Maybe that's the frame of reference right there. My grandparents graduated school before black people were allowed to attend the same ones. My dad was born the year of the civil rights act. There were famous lynchings in towns within an hour of me after the year I was born, 1996

And Trump has weaponized all of that same hate that the tea party did but on an actual national level

You are right I’ll probably never fully grasp how it was for you because I keep forgetting that you do live in the heart of Texas and fortunately for me the tea party never really took root up here. I remember being openly against them from the moment those weird truthers and what not sprouted up, but thankfully they didn’t last like maga did so eventually, they did die out, or maybe they just morphed into maga I guess.

The 2008 election was the first time I was legally able to vote and I voted for Obama. I voted for him again in 2012.

I remember in 2008 my boss at the time didn’t like Obama and had a McCain sticker on his truck. I made sure to not let him know who I voted for. If he’s still alive I wouldn’t be surprised if he voted for Trump.

I do dislike maga almost as much as I dislike the tea party.

now I'm by Dallas so it's fine, the local Republicans are even decent, but I grew up in a district that reelects Louie Gohmert (a tea party apologist) with like 90% of the votes every two years for my entire life

Last night at work I saw someone come in wearing a Charlie Kirk t shirt proclaiming him as a true patriot. It wasn’t the first time I saw one out in the wild I saw one a few days before that too.

I think I do similarly never saw the really crazy libs for awhile too fwiw. Took ages before I even got into atheists spheres that made me even realize I might not believe in religion, not even bc my parents were forcing it on me, it was just a thing I never thought about bc no one else did until I was like 15 or 16. So then add a few more years from there before I get to the irradiate all Christians crazies, and meanwhile I was seeing that about Muslims all the time in casual conversation

I’ll never understand the weird levels of attack on Obama outside of the obvious racists from a republican point of view because the only real thing that I strongly disliked about Obama‘s policy is the individual mandate on healthcare because it’s my business if I want his healthcare or not, but he had a fairly conservative platform. He actually deported more people than any other president in like 20 years and he was strong on border security. He was also a Warhawk in an internationally. Nobody drone struck more people than Obama.

Even questioning Bush was an insane thought which is actually funny as all fuck looking back lol there wasn't any major hate on the Dems that I remember during his run but all that "war criminal" stuff and questioning the war may as well have been a myth to me lol

Ironically when I was nearing the end of my high school years was pretty particularly eye-opening for me because I always thought that I was a liberal because I didn’t believe in any social conservative stuff, but when 9/11 happened and the way the bush handled that I remember getting it so many disagreements with other liberals around here about it but that eventually I realized that I don’t think my policy, I was very liberal at all outside of again social stuff. I’ll always have a soft spot for bush, not saying he was perfect by any means.

I don’t necessarily believe in playing blame games myself, but I think things sometimes just happen and it’s better to work together to resolve things after things happen but I do think Bill should’ve did more about Osama bin Laden considering they attacked the trade centers in 1994 and we had intelligence as far back as 98 that they were gonna try again and I know Bush had the same Intel and he also probably should’ve done more, but Clinton had nearly 6 years to try to go and find him or do something about him and I don’t know it’s weird that it rarely ever gets really brought up but like I said at the end of the day, no one is responsible for 911 outside of Osama so I don’t put that on Bill Clinton either.
