A U.S. judge ruled on Friday that the Trump administration must return a Maryland man who was wrongly deported to El Salvador last month back to the United States within three days.

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Greenbelt, Maryland, said at a court hearing that the government must take steps to ensure the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran migrant, to the United States by April 7.

The U.S. has already acknowledged Abrego Garcia - who lived in the U.S legally and had a work permit - was deported in error, but has argued it has no legal authority to bring him back to the country.

One of Abrego Garcia's lawyers, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, told the judge at Friday's hearing that there was no legal basis for Abrego Garcia's deportation.

“They admit they had no legal authorization to remove him to El Salvador,” Moshenberg said. “The public interest lies in the government following the law.”

Erez Reuveni, a lawyer for the government, conceded that Abrego Garcia should not have been removed.

"That is not in dispute," Reuveni said.

Another order they will promptly ignore.

The final damage for today

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2,231.07 points, or 5.5%, to 38,314.86 on Friday, the biggest decline since June 2020 during the pandemic. This follows a 1,679-point decline on Thursday and marks the first time ever that it has shed more than 1,500 points on back-to-back days.
  • The S&P 500 nosedived 5.97% to 5,074.08, the biggest decline since March 2020. The benchmark shed 4.84% on Thursday and is now off more than 17% off its recent high.
  • The Nasdaq Composite home to many tech companies that sell to China and manufacture there as well, dropped 5.8%, to 15,587.79. This follows a nearly 6% drop on Thursday and takes the index down by 22% from its December record, a bear market in Wall Street terminology.
  • The selling was broad with only 14 members of the S&P 500 higher on the day. Major market indexes closed at their lows of the session.

A divided Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration by allowing officials to block $65 million in teacher development grants frozen over concerns they were promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices.

The 5-4 emergency ruling, for now, lifts a lower order that forced the Education Department to resume the grants in eight Democratic-led states that are suing.

Five of the court’s six conservatives sided with the administration to grant the request. Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s three liberal justices dissented.

The decision is not a final ruling in the case, and the dispute could ultimately return to the Supreme Court. Friday’s order enables the administration to keep the grants blocked until any appeals are resolved.

"What the fuck are those Indians crying about, famine!? Feh, stupid bastards breed like rabbits anyways, maybe dying off will do good for that race."

(This is a legitimate thing he said, paraphrasing of course)

Yeah like the government themselves are even saying they fucked up but are admitting they can't do anything bc of the Salvadorian regime. Like how can it not be more blatant that we shouldn't be sending people there in that case? They refused to provide a list of who they deported for a reason, this won't even be the only one completley innocent
