Jobs report live updates: Employers add 254,000 jobs, blowing past forecasts

The job market and employers made a surprisingly strong showing in the September jobs report, new figures show.

America’s job market picked up in September, employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows, with U.S. employers adding 254,000 jobs in September.

The number was higher than the average monthly gain of 203,000 over the previous 12 months, according to the Labor Department, with jobs trending up in the food and drink industries, health care, government, social assistance and construction. Job growth blew past forecaster estimates and exceeded the August tally of 142,000 new positions.

The unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1% in September from 4.2% in August.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón addressed the public Thursday amid calls for his office to reexamine the convictions of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were found guilty of killing their parents in August 1989.

Gascón said his office plans to do just that.

“I want to be very clear, we have not conceded one way or the other,” he said. “We’re not saying that there was anything wrong with the original trial. We have been given evidence.”
