The pace of hiring slowed in January, as wildfires and snowstorms suppressed some industries and as the Federal Reserve signaled a pause in its course of interest rate cuts, creating a headwind to growth.

A total of 143,000 jobs were added in January, the Labor Department reported on Friday, while the unemployment rate edged down to 4 percent.

The fresh numbers suggest that the labor market may be losing momentum heading into the second administration of President Trump, whose policy agenda — including sharp cuts to federal payrolls and large-scale deportations of unauthorized migrants — could affect both employment and the availability of workers.

Judge to pause Trump administration effort to gut USAID's workforce by thousands

Two labor groups had sued the Trump administration after it said that thousands of USAID employees would be placed on administrative leave starting at 11:59 p.m. Friday.

A federal judge on Friday said he will pause a midnight deadline for the U.S. Agency for International Development to be stripped down to a few hundred workers from a workforce of more than 5,000.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols made the announcement from the bench after a hearing at a federal courthouse in Washington, D.C.

Nichols said he would be entering a “very limited” temporary restraining order before midnight, “that will be directed at the placement of the 2,200 or 2,700 employees on administrative leave, and then the accelerated removal of people from their countries.”

A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the forthcoming order.

Trump Says He Will Install Himself as Kennedy Center Chairman

The move by the president, whose authority to make the changes was not clear, is the latest attempt to bring a Washington institution under his control.

President Trump announced his intention on Friday to bring the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington more firmly under his control, saying he would dismiss several board members and install himself as chairman.

“At my direction, we are going to make the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., GREAT AGAIN,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform.

Mr. Trump said he would “immediately terminate multiple individuals from the Board of Trustees, including the Chairman, who do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture.”

Trump announced in a post to Truth Social this evening that he was "immediately revoking" former President Joe Biden's access to classified records.

"There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information," he wrote. "Therefore, we are immediately revoking Joe Biden’s Security Clearances, and stopping his daily Intelligence Briefings."

Trump cited a report from former special counsel Robert Hur, who last year cited instances of Biden's "poor memory."
