Russia Suspends Flow of Natural Gas to Europe Through Ukraine

The Russian energy giant Gazprom announced the move early Wednesday. Ukraine had refused to renew an agreement that allowed for the transit of Russian gas through its territory.

The Russian energy giant Gazprom said early Wednesday that it had suspended the flow of natural gas to Europe through a pipeline that had carried Soviet and Russian gas through Ukraine for nearly six decades.

The move came after Ukraine had said it would not renew an agreement that allowed for the transit of Russian gas through its territory. The agreement, signed in 2019, ended on Wednesday.

Gazprom made its announcement in a post on the Telegram platform, saying that the gas had stopped flowing at 8 a.m. Moscow time on Wednesday.

A Tesla Cybertruck burst into flames Wednesday morning just outside the entrance of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, killing one person and injuring several others, according to local officials.

The Clark County Fire Department confirmed that it had responded to a vehicle fire in the valet area of the Trump International Hotel at approximately 8:40 a.m. local time.

In a news conference, Clark County Fire Department Deputy Chief Thomas Touchstone said that as first responders began to extinguish the fire, they "realized at the same time that there were multiple persons with injuries located around the vehicle."

The man connected to the rental of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside of a Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday is a US Special Forces soldier assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group, according to four US officials.

The man, who has not been identified publicly, is a US Army special forces operations sergeant and holds the rank of master sergeant, which is a senior enlisted rank, the officials told CNN. He was on active duty but was on leave from Germany, where he had been serving with the 10th Group, at the time of the incident, three officials said.

The driver of the Cybertruck was killed and seven others nearby were injured on New Year’s Day when a combination of fireworks, gas tanks and camping fuel in the bed of the vehicle were detonated by a device controlled by the driver, police said.

The explosion could have been significantly worse if not for the vehicle’s body construction, which helped contain the blast, police said.

The FBI is investigating whether the explosion is tied to terrorism, and officials noted the implications of the Tesla vehicle and the hotel’s namesake.
