Two kindergarten students were wounded in a shooting at a school in northern California on Wednesday afternoon and a male suspect was found dead with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office received 911 calls around 1:09 p.m. from the Feather River Adventist School in Oroville and responded to the scene “immediately with every available law enforcement officer in Butte County,” the department told CNN. The two wounded students are kindergarten boys aged 5 and 6, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey told CNN affiliate KCRA.

President Joe Biden’s senior aides are conducting a vigorous internal debate over whether to issue preemptive pardons to a range of current and former public officials who could be targeted with President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, according to senior Democrats familiar with the discussions.

Biden’s aides are deeply concerned about a range of current and former officials who could find themselves facing inquiries and even indictments, a sense of alarm which has only accelerated since Trump last weekend announced the appointment of Kash Patel to lead the FBI. Patel has publicly vowed to pursue Trump’s critics.

A three-judge panel in Washington unanimously upheld a new US law enacted to protect national security and user privacy, ruling that it didn’t violate free speech protections under the Constitution’s First Amendment. The judge said he will encourage the jury to continue deliberating on Monday the lesser charge of whether Daniel Penny committed criminally negligent homicide in the death of Jordan Neely.

Judge Maxwell Wiley informed the jury he is dismissing the manslaughter charge against Daniel Penny after the jury signaled twice it could not reach a unanimous verdict.

He said he will encourage the jury to continue deliberating on Monday the lesser charge of whether Penny committed criminally negligent homicide in the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man, on the New York City subway last year.

The rebels’ gains prompted Lebanon and Jordan to close border crossings and Iran to begin withdrawing personnel from Syria.

The collection of rebel groups fighting to depose President Bashar al-Assad of Syria pushed further south on Friday toward a major city en route to the capital, as the government’s chief patron, Iran, moved to evacuate military commanders and other personnel from the country.

The rebels’ stunningly rapid gains spread alarm to neighboring countries, prompting border closures to guard against the prospect of further chaos as Mr. al-Assad’s authoritarian government lost more of its grip over swaths of the country.
