Quarterback Trey Lance reached agreement on a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million with the Los Angeles Chargers, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday.

Lance and Taylor Heinicke are now the backups behind Chargers starter Justin Herbert.

Herbert has been one of the most durable quarterbacks in the NFL over his first five seasons. He started 62 consecutive games to begin his career, which was the second-longest active streak in the NFL, before a fracture to his right index finger in Week 14 of 2023 ended his season.

Still, Herbert has played through injuries, and while he didn't miss a game in 2024, he was often hobbled and missed snaps or quarters of games due to injuries. The injury bug began in training camp when a plantar fascia diagnosis kept him out for two weeks. Then Herbert suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2 that he aggravated the following week and navigated a thigh contusion and a separate ankle injury later in the year.

Lance gives the Chargers another competent backup option -- along with Heinicke, who appeared in four games last season -- if Herbert misses any time. The signing also likely means that Easton Stick, the Chargers' third-string quarterback last season, will likely not be back.

The No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Lance remains something of a mystery after four seasons in the league.

He started four games in two years with San Francisco, posting a 2-2 record while throwing for 797 yards, 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on 56-of-102 passing. An ankle injury cost him his starting job, leading to Brock Purdy's run of success with the Niners.

In 2023, the Dallas Cowboys acquired Lance for a fourth-round pick in last year's draft, but he did not play a snap in 2023 and saw only spot duty in 2024 until starting the regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders -- completing 20 of 34 passes for 244 yards without a touchdown or interception, and running for 26 yards on six carries in a 23-19 last-second loss.

He also played the majority of the snaps in last year's preseason for the Cowboys, completing 73 of 113 passes for 662 yards and two touchdowns, but he threw five interceptions in the preseason finale against the Chargers.

Lance, 24, is younger than 2024 first-round picks Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. Former coach Mike McCarthy said Lance just needed to continue to gain experience because he played only 19 games at North Dakota State before entering the NFL.

ESPN's Kris Rhim and Todd Archer contributed to this report.

Julio calls it a career.

Julio Jones has not played since 2023, but he didn’t announce his retirement until Friday.

“Today I’m announcing my retirement,” Jones said in a video posted to social media. “It started when I was 8 years old, just a kid in Foley, Alabama. It was an amazing ride.”

Jones, 36, thanked Nick Saban, Matt Ryan, Mike Smith and the city of Atlanta, among others, in his 2-minute, 49-second video.

He played 13 NFL seasons after the Falcons made him the sixth overall pick in 2011, spending 10 years in Atlanta, one in Tennessee, one in Tampa and one in Philadelphia. Jones caught 914 passes for 13,702 yards and 66 touchdowns.

He was first-team All-Pro twice, second-team All-Pro three times and a seven-time Pro Bowler. Jones also was a member of the 2010s All-Decade Team as a member of the Falcons.

We had Jameis...

I was perfectly fine with the 25 touchdown, 40 interception season he was about to have cause it meant Malik was getting 200 targets.

Then we signed Russ...

At least fine Ciara comes along with him

MIAMI -- Dolphins offensive lineman Terron Armstead announced his retirement Saturday night, ending his decorated 12-year NFL career.

Armstead, 33, announced the news at a party he hosted in Miami to celebrate his next chapter, with several former teammates in attendance.

The five-time Pro Bowl standout signed a five-year, $75 million contract with the Dolphins in 2022 and spent three seasons as the team's starting left tackle. During that span, he was named to two Pro Bowls and was a three-time team captain.

A third-round pick out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff by the New Orleans Saints in 2013, the Cahokia, Illinois, native set an NFL scouting combine record for an offensive lineman with a 4.71-second 40-yard dash.

Armstead spent his first nine seasons with the Saints before signing with Miami, where he immediately took on a veteran leadership role for a team amid several coaching and roster changes.

While he was instrumental in the development of offensive linemen such as Austin Jackson and Patrick Paul, Armstead also proved to be influential for players on the other side of the ball, including 2024 first-round pick Chop Robinson.

"Just getting an offensive perspective, especially against one of the greatest, just learning from him," Robinson said in August. "I go against him in practice, and he's doing things that I've never seen before from an O-lineman.

"He gave me tips on how I could work on that. I can't tell the tips, but it definitely worked."

Armstead's retirement leaves the Dolphins without a starting left tackle, although 2024 second-round pick Paul is expected to fill the vacancy. Miami coach Mike McDaniel told reporters at the NFL scouting combine in February that the team was operating this offseason as if Armstead would not return in 2025.

It also leaves Miami without two of the most respected voices in its locker room, after Calais Campbell signed with the Arizona Cardinals earlier this week. Multiple players and McDaniel admit to needing a stronger culture of accountability moving forward, and they will have to find a way to replace nearly three decades' worth of NFL experience.

It's doubly sad. Dude killed a guy back in December by driving like a fuckwad. Now he's dead right before a Grand Jury hears the evidence before going to trial.

2 lives wasted.

Actually, calling it a situation is really putting it lightly. Henry Ruggs murdered that woman, and didn't have any remorse for the act itself, but for the fact it ended his career and sent him to prison.

this kid caused a major wreck by driving in the wrong lane. Then he just left the scene of the crime. A dude died. He declared for the draft 2 days later. Hell he was at LSUs Pro Day.

I never even heard about any of this which is surprising to me.
