Very disheartening seeing how few fan are at this SFA home opener compared to years past :sadpanda team also does not look good even though they're winning rn, no chance they make it to the tournament this year unless this conference is just straight trash (it might be)

I mean, it generally always has been trash. See also Texas Southern in the SWAC, which is an even more extreme example.

I need to inject some life in the NCAA Men's and Women's College Basketball thread.

My Alabama team has won their third games in a row, beating Mississippi State 80-75 to make it a 17-9 record overall (7-6 in the SEC). It's great to see the Tide get out of the 3-6 slump they were on that 9-game span before the 3-game winning streak. The next game is Saturday at #4 Kentucky, which they recently lost to #16 ranked Tennessee on the road a couple of days ago, 73-67. Bama's gonna have to start off strong and quick by shooting 3's and make the baskets, before Kentucky gets settled in their own home court. I can see it be a close game between the teams.

Bama's down 47-46 to Kentucky at halftime. Close as expected.

The Tide needs to execute the three-point shots more. Keon Ellis has done a great job going 5 for 6 in that category. They're playing good against the Wildcats, but the three-point shots does need to improve, as the Tide has gone 9 for 22 overall.

Plus, Quinerly and Shackelford has been cold in field goal shots, as they shot 2 for 8 each. They need to step up in the second half, because those points are a must.

Gonzaga tabbed as NCAA men's basketball selection committee's top overall seed; Auburn, Arizona, Kansas right behind

ESPN

Gonzaga is the overall 1-seed in the NCAA tournament men's basketball selection committee's bracket preview, revealed early Saturday afternoon, for the second straight season.

The committee announced its top 16 seeds as of now, with Auburn, Arizona and Kansas rounding out the 1-seeds after the Zags.

"The margin between Gonzaga and Auburn is razor-thin, as is the gap between Auburn and Arizona," committee chair Tom Burnett said.

Burnett said the committee pointed to Gonzaga's wins over Texas Tech, UCLA and Texas -- all of whom were selected as part of the top 16 -- giving Mark Few's program the edge for the No. 1 spot.

Baylor, Kentucky, Purdue and Duke were the 2-seeds, with Burnett saying Baylor and Kentucky were right there with Kansas in the discussion for the final 1-seed.

"You could make a case for all three teams, as Baylor has more Quadrant 1 wins than anyone and Kentucky doesn't have any losses outside of the first quadrant," he said. "Some head-to-head games involving those three teams certainly was a topic of conversation but as things stand today, we have Kansas with a slight edge."

The 3-seeds were Villanova, Texas Tech, Tennessee and Illinois, while Wisconsin, UCLA, Providence and Texas were the 4-seeds.

Burnett said Alabama, Houston and Ohio State were the next three teams under consideration. The Cougars entered Saturday ranked No. 4 in the NET, No. 2 in the BPI and No. 7 at KenPom -- but Burnett said their lack of a single Quadrant 1 win kept them off the 4-line.

The biggest talking point coming out of the bracketing preview was the committee placing Villanova as the 3-seed in the East Region, which will be played at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The Wildcats play several home games at Wells Fargo every season.

This is the lone mock bracket reveal of the season. Selection Sunday is March 13.

"This could all change with this weekend's results, let alone with what transpires over the next three weeks," Burnett said. "There's a lot of basketball still to be played."

Welp, Kentucky's got a commanding 71-58 lead with 11:15 left in the game.

Bama's not making their shots and Kentucky is. :(

Kentucky beats Bama 90-81, giving the Tide their tenth loss of the season.

Kentucky in the second half just left Bama in the dust, as they were hot in the beginning and continue to lead the game until the very end. I knew it would be a tough game overall.

Michigan men's basketball coach Juwan Howard suspended for rest of Wolverines' regular season after postgame altercation at Wisconsin

ESPN

Michigan men's basketball coach Juwan Howard has been suspended five games -- the remainder of the regular season -- and fined $40,000 for hitting Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft in the face after Sunday's game, the Big Ten Conference announced on Monday.

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard was fined $10,000 but not suspended, while Krabbenhoft is not expected to receive punishment.

Michigan forwards Terrance Williams and Moussa Diabate and Wisconsin guard Jahcobi Neath were each suspended one game. All three appeared to throw punches. The disciplinary actions were imposed by the Big Ten, in conjunction with both schools.

"Big Ten Conference coaches and student-athletes are expected to display the highest level of sportsmanship conduct," conference commissioner Kevin Warren said in the statement. "I am grateful for the partnership with Michigan athletics director, Warde Manuel and Wisconsin athletics director, Chris McIntosh.

"Our expectation is that the incident yesterday will provide our coaches and student-athletes with the opportunity to reflect, learn and move forward in a manner that demonstrates decorum and leadership on and off of the court."

In the final minute of Wisconsin's 77-63 win on Sunday, Gard substituted his walk-ons into the game. Michigan, which still had its regulars on the floor, was pressing full-court, leading Gard to call a timeout to settle his team and give it a chance to cross half court without turning the ball over.

Following the final buzzer, Gard grabbed Howard's arm as he walked past in an attempt to stop and talk to him. The two men exchanged words, with Howard putting his finger in Gard's face and grabbing Gard's shirt before being surrounded by several players and coaches. Krabbenhoft then came over in the middle of the scrum, exchanged words with Howard, then Howard reached out and struck Krabbenhoft's face.

Both teams began pushing and shoving, with Michigan's Diabate and Williams and Wisconsin's Neath appearing to throw punches.

"Today's disciplinary actions underscore the seriousness with which we take the incident that unfolded on Sunday. Simply put, there is no room at U-M for the behavior we saw," Manuel said in a separate statement, released by the school. "We will learn from this incident as a department, work to improve ourselves while operating under a spotlight, and move forward in a positive light."

Howard said he was angry over Wisconsin's timeout usage. Wisconsin called two timeouts in the last minute, including one with 15 seconds left when the Badgers led by 15.

"I didn't like the timeout they called, and I'm being totally honest with you," Howard said. "I thought it was not necessary at that moment, especially with it being a large lead. ... I thought that wasn't fair to our guys. And so that's what happened."

He also said someone from Wisconsin made contact with him, but didn't specify who did it.

"Someone touched me, and I think it was very uncalled for, for them to touch me, as we were verbalizing and communicating with one another. That's what escalated it," he said.

Gard explained his rationale for the timeouts, particularly the one with 15 seconds left, in a postgame interview with CBS.

"Apparently he didn't like that I called the timeout to reset the 10-second call. Because we only had four seconds to get the ball over half court," Gard told CBS. "I didn't want to put my backups -- I had all my bench guys in the game -- I didn't want to put them in that position of scrambling with only four seconds. So I took a timeout and got us a new 10 seconds and it helped them get organized and get the ball in. And he did not like that when he came through the handshake line. I'll leave it at that and the tape will show the rest."

Michigan (14-11 overall, 8-7 in the Big Ten) has four straight games at home before playing at Ohio State in the regular-season finale. Associate head coach Phil Martelli, the former longtime coach at St. Joseph's, took over head-coaching duties when Howard was ejected from last year's Big Ten tournament.

"After taking time to reflect on all that happened, I realize how unacceptable both my actions and words were, and how they affected so many. I am truly sorry," Howard said in Michigan's follow-up statement.

"I am offering my sincerest apology to my players and their families, my staff, my family and the Michigan fans around the world. I would like to personally apologize to Wisconsin's Assistant Coach Joel Krabbenhoft and his family, too. "Lastly, I speak a lot about being a Michigan man and representing the University of Michigan with class and pride, I did not do that, nor did I set the right example in the right way for my student-athletes. I will learn from my mistake and this mistake will never happen again. No excuses!"

Here's the video of the incident:
