When WWE Studios unveiled that they were teaming up with Lionsgate to craft a reboot of the Leprechaun franchise a few weeks back, I immediately thought “they’re going to cast Hornswoggle in the lead role.†I said it in a mostly joking way – because as far as I know, Hornswoggle (aka Dylan Postl) has no acting experience outside of a professional wrestling ring (and no, that’s not a dig at pro wrestlers. While I don’t follow pro wrestling, what those guys do certainly requires talent and performance skills). Apparently, that’s about to change.
Variety has an update on all of the latest casting news for the various WWE projects in development, and it turns out that Postl will indeed be headlining the Leprechaun reboot as the title character. Still no details on who will direct the feature, which is a reimagining of the 1993 film – which spawned multiple sequels.
In the original series, the evil Leprechaun was played by the brilliant Warwick Davis – who was still pitching ideas for a new installment (including the hilarious thought of teaming up with Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow since both characters love gold) when the remake was announced.
Expect Leprechaun: Origins to land in theaters sometime in March 2013.
I fucking knew it was going to be Hornswoggle. I called it when they first announced this. God this will be aweful, but they could actually use him to come out from under the ring in his Leprechaun costume and that could be interesting.
