The story of the Von Erich family is closer to reaching the big screen.

Deadline reported today that Zac Efron is set to star in the film "The Iron Claw" about the Von Erich family. The movie is a drama and is being written and directed by Sean Durkin.

The report didn't state which Von Erich family member Efron will be playing.

"Based on the true story of the Von Erichs, the film follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day," Deadline wrote.

Durkin wrote and directed the critically acclaimed film "Martha Marcy May Marlene" in 2011.

Independent film company A24 is financing and producing "The Iron Claw."

Deadline first reported in January 2020 that Durkin was working on developing the Von Erich biopic.

In 2019, an episode of Vice TV's "Dark Side of the Ring" chronicled the tragedy of the Von Erich family. The documentary focused on Kevin Von Erich being the last surviving Von Erich brother. Kevin's sons Marshall & Ross Von Erich currently compete for MLW.

ESPN also produced an edition of "30 for 30 Shorts" on the Von Erichs in 2015.

If he's playing Kerry, he better get on the Marvel vitamins.

I'd rather know who plays Fritz.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Efron in more serious and dramatic roles. I normally associated him with comedy stuff, but his recent work has been good.

I think he'll do a good job.

He kinda got that Von Erich look too :lol I just feel like this is gonna be one of those things that I'm gonna be mad at for taking liberties when I know the true stories and they're crazy enough to make a movie about as is

Hi, I'm Chucky. Wanna play?
Man that will be one depressing story. For anyone wanting a deep look into the whole Von Erich story look up the Lapsed Fan's journey on WCCW. What a disturbing tale.

That's why I am more interested in who's playing Fritz.

Jeremy Allen White is set to join the cast of the upcoming film The Iron Claw as Kerry Von Erich, who famously wrestled in the WWF as The Texas Tornado.

White will star in the film alongside Zac Efron, who plays Kevin Von Erich, and Harris Dickinson, who will play David Von Erich. White is best known for his role in the hit Showtime series Shameless but has also recently starred in FX’s The Bear, a cooking comedy-drama series.

Written and directed by Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene), The Iron Claw is based on a true story and follows the famed Von Erich family through their ups and downs in the world of wrestling. No release window has been set as of writing.

The Von Erich family has had an enormous impact on wrestling since the 60s and is notorious for their so-called family curse. Five of the six sons of Fritz Von Erich, the first wrestler and patriarch of the family, died prior to their father in a wide range of circumstances. Most of Fritz’s sons, including Kerry Von Erich, famously wrestled prior to their deaths. To this day, Marshall and Ross Von Erich, the sons of Kevin Von Erich (the last living son of Fritz), still wrestle.

A24, Tessa Ross, Derrin Schlesinger, and Harrison Huffman will produce. The film is being developed by House Productions, with the support of Access Entertainment and BBC Film.
