Samoa Joe attacked Tazz. Before he himself was written off, Samoa Joe was mentoring Hook. He could say daddy being around was making him weak.
See - boom, this is why they'd run an angle to write off an announcer that just happens to be the father of a worker. Like if Tony Schiavone needed to be away for a bit, they probably just say "hey, Tony won't be here for a while due to surgery or whatever" - but when you can use it to develop one of your characters, why not? This is almost as pointless a discussion as the FTW title one.
