The long awaiting Steam Box from Valve might actually be announced this week. The link above is the display page which includes a count down clock to unlock the announcement. The second announcement, from the time of writing this, will arrive in 48 hours.

Just minutes ago from writing this, the SteamOS has been officially announced with the link displaying on the web page. Here is a bit from the announcement:

As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the
environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.
SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

After the second announcement, the third one seems to be one combined with both the first and second announcement which could reveal the actual Steam Box as we have just found out about the SteamOS.

Thoughts?

Depending on the price, I'd buy it. At this point though Valve could sell me a box of Manure and it'd be gold.

Ive looked into it, and it's a decent idea. It'll be virtually the same though, their issue will be getting product licensing from netflix, youtube, and other things like that to make it at least comparible to having an internet source. It would be dank if they did a team up with google to have chrome on the steambox. If it's just games, you have to realize that means no 3rd party anything.

The OS it runs on is a Linux Distribution that's (obviously) fully modifiable, you'll be able to practically do anything to it.

This thing will be the Android of consoles. There'll be multiple different models for sale at multiple different prices by multiple different manufactures, not just on Valve-made specific one. Add that, the insane Steam deals and Valves promised compatibility upgrade for OpenGL and this thing could take over if advertised right.
