First of all, forgive me ladies and gentlemen if the grammar of this post is horrible. I'm typing this from my HTC and don't have a word processor.
Anyway, I'd like to get a discussion going on speed traps and see what you guys opinions on the subject are located. This topic came to mind when I was having a conversation with a few former coworkers about speed traps and the general publics allegations. We even talked about the speedtrap.org website, which allows motorists to list speed traps and give their opinions. What was interesting is that two of the three police departments (not including another that I'm in the hiring process) are listed on the site. Reading some of the stuff posted is just hilarious. Now I'm only going to talk about traffic laws in the state of Georgia since that is the only state I've worked in and the only state's traffic laws I've ever gave my interest.
Two of the cities I worked are accused of not giving the proper warnings that their are speed zones. That is a garbage accusation! Both cities have signs before you enter the city limits (from every entrance too) stating that speed is being checked by detection devices and that driver is approaching a speed zone and to slow down. Also, motorists have stated that the officers will pull a driver over for 1 mph as soon as they enter the reduced speed area, and that officers will hide to catch drivers. Once again both of these are garbage. 1) Georgia Law forbids any officer, other than Georgia State Patrol, to hide, and must be visible from at least 500 FT. 2) Any officer other than a Georgia State Patrol, may not stop a motorist for driving less than 10mph over the posted speed limit. 3) All officers must give a motorist 300ft once entering a reduced speed area in a municipality and 600 ft out in the open highway.
So, in my opinion, the motorists have their fair warnings, and we play by the rules (well most of us do anyway), so why call a city a speed trap? My opinion, and that is all it is, is that we as a society are spoiled and have a false.sense of entitlement. We feel as if we can live carefree without regard, until we get caught. Then our own mistakes are blamed on others. However, like I said, this is just my opinions.
