Sony revealed most of the games that will arriving alongside the new and improved PlayStation Plus and said that select retro titles would have improved frame rates, higher resolutions, and a new user interface that will allow users to save at any time and rewind. And now it seems that trophies are coming to at least some of those older rereleases, too.
Bend Studio tweeted that Syphon Filter, which originally released on the PS1 in 1999, will have trophies when it rereleases. The developer then included a picture of a silver trophy popping called “An Explosive Start.” The image in question has what appears to be a subway car exploding, which is likely related to the subway train that blows up at the end of the first level.
This is the first confirmation that trophies are making their way to old games on the service, as Sony still has yet to officially comment on the matter. However, given Sony’s wording with other features, it’s possible that not every game will get them, as the announcement on the PlayStation Blog post uses “select” for many of PlayStation Plus’ features. Only “select” games will have rewinding and the ability to save whenever. “Select” games users already purchased will be available for no extra charge. There will be trials for “select” titles. It remains to be seen how many of these old games will have trophies — there are at least eight other PS1 games and one PSP game — but it’s possible that only some will. Users will have to keep an eye out on trophy tracking websites like PSNProfiles and Exophase in the near future as the service is supposed to launch in some Asian territories next week.
This feature would also back up a patent that was discovered last year. Reddit user Bartman013 found a patent where Sony describes a “method and apparatus for awarding trophies” through emulation. According to the patent, Sony argues that “it would be desirable to be able to award trophies to users playing older games that were not introduced with the trophy feature” and that it can “enhance the gaming experience” before delving into jargon describing the process. This is also not the first retro trophy patent Sony has filed, either, as a similar one bubbled up in 2013. The patent family link also shows two other times Sony filed for the patent in 2016 and 2019.
Glad somebody else loves that game!If they add The Punisher game I'll think about it.
After teasing fans with the potential of Dino Crisis heading to Sony’s revamped PlayStation Plus service, Capcom has now apparently given Resident Evil fans a treat with the original Resident Evil: Director’s Cut being available on the service as of today.
For those not in the know, way back when Capcom had been working on the follow-up to the original Resident Evil, they had decided to scrap what they were working on with Resident Evil 2 (which was dubbed Resident Evil 1.5 by fans), and go back to the drawing board. In order to satiate fans, Capcom decided to release Resident Evil: Director’s Cut of the original game. The new version (which still had the censored opening cinematic by mistake) added in new gory scenes, as well as a new arranged mode and various other tweaks.
As for this version of the PS1 classic, the listing states that it had been converted from the PlayStation version to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles with “newly added features”. Most likely, that involves Trophy support or save states. The listing does mention that there may be times where the game plays differently from the original PlayStation version, and some features may cause the game to not function properly.
It’s not perfect, but if you don’t have the original game lying around somewhere, this is your best bet.
The new PlayStation Plus service launched in Japan on June 2, and launches today in North and South America. The European, Australian, and New Zealand version of PlayStation Plus launches on June 23. If you’re curious about the North American PlayStation Plus lineup of games, VGC has a handy list of all 700+ games.
Yeah they actually have some good features I believe. You got save stating and rewind like emulators can do.I believe I read that if you own some of these games digitally on PS3 you should be able to download them for free regardless if you have the new tiers or not. I booted up my ps5 today and went to Resident Evil: Director's Cut and it said I needed to subscribe to play it. I was on the essential plan as I have PS+ until 2024. I paid $138 today to upgrade that all to the premium plan so im covered until 2024 with the highest tier so now I should be able to download it.
It says it has the rewind option for when you die/make a mistake. I don't see anything about trophies but I haven't actually started it up yet.
Unfortunately not. I wish TimeSplitters would get more love.Any timesplitters?
