Smackdown Review 7-18-08

The show starts off with a shot from the wedding. We are informed that we will be invited to a two hour long wedding reception. Well that’s good because of wedding angles, the actual “I do’s†are the worst. Back in the arena, Chavo is introduced as the best man. Edge and Vickie make their way out. Chavo says he s gotten Edge a great wedding present, Edge on the cover of the WWE Mag with the WWE Title. Good stuff. PS ftw! Anyway, Edge thanks him and gets the show started. The Finlay’s come out for a match. Edge says he is sick of them cheating so he is going to officiate their next match.

Finlay’s vs. The Edges
This was rather short. When Finlay got the advantage, Edge grabbed Hornswaggle. Daddy no like and is going to Celtic crucify Edge but gets low-bridged. Edge hits a spear and one of the guys makes the cover.

Winners: The Edges
Match Rating: *

Edge goes back to Vickie and they have their first dance that is interrupted by The Big Show who cuts in on Edge. Show is informed he has a match next so he should get to the ring.

The Big Show vs. Shelton Benjamin, MVP, The Great Khali, and Vladimir Kozlov
Show weathers Shelton’s lack of offense. MVP mocks Benjamin so Benji tags him in. MVP bows up to Show but then tags in Vlad. Vladdy tries to go right at Show but gets tossed around like a small child. Khali gets a blind tag in and he and show have a monster off, which TBS wins. This brings in everyone who start a straight up beat down on Show. After taking everyone’s finisher or secondary move, its over.

Winner: No one (I think)
Match Rating: **

Vickie is going to throw her bouquet. Michelle gets tossed for starting shit with Nattie. Cherry catches it and is told she wins a match with the blushing bride. But first, she has to have a match with Nattie.

Nattie Neidhart vs. Cherry
Cherry gets jumped and gets locked in a sharpshooter and taps.

Winner: Nattie Neidhart

Then Vickie says its her turn

Vickie Guerrero vs. Cherry
Vickie covers her for the win

Winner: Vickie Guerrero

Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Brian Kendrick w/ Ezekiel

Brian Kendrick debuts his new gimmick. He looks like he is wearing shoulder pads, which looks very gay. The match itself was rather bland. Kendrick gets the win with no help from the prophet on the outside.

Winner: Brian Kendrick
Match Rating: **

Ken Kennedy vs. Umaga
The Cheesehead wants revenge for last weeks sneak attack. Kennedy locks up and gets tossed around. Umaga tries to stalk Kennedy but gets out quicked. Umaga takes over though with some very methodical offense. The wild Samoan uses a variety of high impact blows to ground KK. A nerve hold almost takes Kennedy out but he comes back only to be driven almost through the canvas with a vicious Samoan Drop.

Back on SD and Umaga locks in the nerve hold again. Umaga drags Ken to the middle and goes for the big dive but misses. Kennedy fights back into it and hits that beautiful kick of his. He goes for the cover but only gets a 2. Umaga hits the Samoan Spike after a missed Mic Check and gets the W.

Winner: Umaga
Match Rating: **1/2

Jesse & Festus vs. MnM2k8
Ok one more time before the Bash. Jesse starts out and hits a nice cradle suplex on Morrison. Festus gets the tag and cleans house. Jesse comes back in. Lots of great tandem moves from the farm boys. But now, its formulaic. Miz takes over, double team, hot tag to Festus who cleans house again. This time, however, like a dumbass, he tags out and Jesse gets Reality Checked ftl.

Winners: MnM2k8
Match Rating: **

Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy
The brothers come out together. Before they go to the ring, Chavo gets a face full of cake. Matt and Jeff tart out by giving us a wrestling clinic. Then action picks up and we get each men going for their signature moves. Jeff is the only to hit his however with the Whisper In The Wind. Right around this time, La Familia come in and ruin the god damn match.

Winners: No one
Match Rating: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

After the beat down Vickie and Edge talk about themselves when HHH comes out. He has a present >_>. Two actually. One is a video. He proceeds to show it bit by it. It shows Edge macking on Krystal, the wedding planner. Edge says he’s seen enough and sends La Familia to get him but H reveals his 2nd present, sledgy! He tells them he’s brought enough for everyone. The Fam backs off and we get back into the vid. It shows Edge kissing her. Oooo Edge got jungle feevah! Vickie snaps and Edge leaves as HHH laughs.

All in all it was pretty good show, but nothing spectacular. Though I will say, this thing with Edge and Vickie is why there should be MORE heel wedding angles. And for the record, this was the first one, to my recollection which made it fun. Anyway, that’s it for me. Don’t forget to read SPs LATEest Raw Reviews and my No Smark Zone. SEE YA NEXT WEEK!!

*implying.

I really liked SD this week. Wrestling wasn't great, but the storyline development was awesome imo. WWE continues to impress me.

Good review, again. It was a good SD, as you said, but nothing over the top. Still solid, as was your review.

Going against the grain again.

This was boring. Every single match was boring. The reception, was tedious and just plain awful. And boring (just to drive it home a bit more). HHH's segment was really the only saving grace of this show unfortunately you had to sit through 90% garbage for it.

Come on.

The wedding segments were all painful to watch aside from the last one. Opening tag match wasn't very good action and had a shit ending.

The handicap match was particularly hard on the eyes, and a non-finish.

I don't think I need to comment on the two women's matches. Pointless, and not even remotely entertaining.

I had expected a decent match out of Kendrick, and Yang, but was sorely disappointed. The match pretty much stayed grounded and never really built up ant excitement.

Kennedy and Umaga was awful. I haven't seen that many restholds since the last Orton match I watched. And they were long. Painfully long. Totally ruined the match even if the second half did pick up a little bit.

I was indifferent to the Miz&Morrison/Jesse&Festus match. Nothing really out of the ordinary, but probably the best match of the night, which isn't saying very damned much.

Matt Hardy/Jeff Hardy was useless. They're almost certainly not going back to that well again for a long time, and again, a non-finish.

I just don't see how anybody can be entertained by this.

^it looked like a cinderella story at first. Then went to a Titanic story at the end.

But yes i didnt enjoy any bit of this show. I think they were concentrating about GAB alot that this show turned out to be a crap.

I enjoy wedding angles, always have, always will. Sorry. The Umaga match was just fine for me, I like slower technical matches. yeah, the Kendrick match blew goats. And the end was great. The show was, like I said, not great, but not bad. Just in the middle.

Too true, Monkey. They could've at least let the Hardys go at it for 10-20 min, and cut the down the pointless wedding segments. And when the Hardys came out together, why did they both enter to Jeff's music? Why not just show the fact that they are both now on their own?
