KOTOR, or FF7 or 9 are def the best single player RPGs ever.

KOTOR 1, not 2 right? The ending to 2 was one of the worst things I've ever seen. Also, add in Shenmue 1&2, FF6 over any of the others, Earthbound, Crono Trigger and Baldur's Gate 2.

But what RPG's do have deep combat besides Deux Ex and arguably Fallout? JRPGS are far more repetitive.

Shenmue 1&2, Baldur's Gate 1&2, Kingdom of Loathing :shifty: I thought Super Paper Mario had some minor twists on the usual combat that made it more enjoyable, but not as deep as the others though.

i didnt know we had this many RPG fans on the forum.........sad.

For my money, unless the game is titled Civilization, RPGs are the way to go.

FF6/3 whatever you wanna call and Chrono Trigger are indeed fucking awesome. Didn't play all of Baldur's Gate but heard it was great. I thought the KOTOR 2 story was horribly underrated and actually features A LOT of content I didn't realize before which really compares KOTOR 2's ability to be replayed compared to KOTOR 1. The ending was ok but a lot of the content was missing because the game was deadlined due to LucasArts rushing Obsideon so it's missing tons of shit including a whole planet. Considering that, it turned out pretty good.

Oh fuck, forgot, does anyone remember Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars on the Super Nintendo? Probably the first RPG I played or remember, god damn it was sucha great game.

I keep thinking Suikoden when Shenmue is mentioned but I thought Shemnue was an action game?

Also, recommend me some PS1 RPG's besides FF7. Pretty much all of the other FF PS1 games are on there, wild arms, first Suikoden, and just about all the Square RPGS. Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, etc

I got Parasite Eve but I haven't played it yet.

Had no idea about them being rushed to put it out. Makes sense though looking back on it. I think the other reason I look at the ending of the 2nd one so poorly is because I know that there is almost certainly never going to be a third one and KOTOR was clearly designed to be a trilogy in and of itself.

One nice thing I will say about KOTOR 2 is that I liked the characters in your party a lot more and they actually gave narrative justification as to why they follow you so blindly.

Shenmue's combat is based on the Virtuafighter engine I'm pretty sure. The rest is pure RPG. Its attention to detail is unbelievable.

I know a lot of people didn't like a lot of things about it. Like, in the second one, you start in February and you must finish the game by the end of summer, you have to be in bed by 11pm most often, and if you want money you have to go out and get a fucking job.

I can see why people were turned off but I loved it.

Yeah, I got KOTOR 1 on Steam when the TOR beta went down for fucking ages. Played it a bit and realized I've overplayed this game and then it really hit me how much better the gameplay and content was in KOTOR 2. So many great planets and stuff you could do, like how do they expanded on pazaak and swoop racing, and NAR SHADDAA!

you get to 50 in TOR yet? I got to 50 and stopped awhile ago, cus I hate the typical end game MMO raiding shit. I got to 50 with Sith War/Marauder. I was obsessed with the story because it was awesome and I didn't get to finish it in the beta (was so close). I knew what to expect, so right as I got to 50 I didn't wanna do the typical end game WoW shit so I quit. They left a lot of intricate side-stuff out of this game that KOTOR had that could make the end-game more fulfilling. Things like pazaak, swoop bike racing, the arena, etc. are what gave other things to do in KOTOR which woulda set them apart from WoW. Did FF11 and so forth even keep in the chocobo breeding elements and shit? Instead they all just copied WoW and they don't even have a good unique PvP (could be great if they utilized different fundamentals and mechanics; think Battlefront 2) instead of a WoW battlegrounds copy, or had real space combat (even SWG did it well, but being able to customize your ship and add parts you get from drops like gear to fight others would be even more sick) to make the end game worth it for now. Later, I can see it being very successful and it has a lot of potential once they release more stuff. They also got a GREAT start as they're over a million subscribers but the question is how many will be subscribing again? Probably only half tops, that's probably why they gave the option to have 30 days free when you buy the game, knowing no one would even play after they finish the KOTOR story elements (which was great, again). I think SWTOR coulda worked extremely well if done right, that's why I didn't cast it off initially like others did. It had the potential to be KOTOR 3 and much more. BioWare will certainly improve the game and itself as time goes on though, they're a great company, but are just completely new to MMOs. though

Never played it and don't really know many PS1 RPGs aside from the ones already listed. Unless the first .hack game was released for PS1. Haven't played them but I read the books they're based on and I've heard the games are true to the story and a lot of fun. That's all I've got.

I haven't even installed it yet. I'm still balls deep in Civ5 and Skyrim and I can't focus on too many games at a time. I'm also playing Jade Empire occasionally when I don't feel like playing on the PC anymore and watching a show or something like that.

I'll get around to it eventually, but I was kinda waiting for them to really roll things out. I'm not in any great hurry, I don't think. It's not like I paid for the game anyway and I haven't purchased game time yet either.

Oh, and you really enjoyed Pazaak? I played it once in the first game and hated it because it was so slow. They sped it up for the second game but it was still boring to me.

I should consider giving both games a DL.

In kotor 2 it was a lot better yeah and more you could do with the cards. I thought it had potential to be pretty good like the ff9 card game.

What about Chrono Trigger/Cross, Vagrant Story and Xenogears?

Well, if you haven't played Crono Trigger I wouldn't recommend it on the PS1. There are some nice new cinematics but the loading times are just brutal. You'll be much better served playing it on emulator.

Crono Cross was okay. It's been a long time but I recall being disappointed because I didn't really get what I wanted. That's another game I should go back and play too.

The Final Fantasy Anthologies aren't bad but again suffer badly from loading times. Like Crono Trigger I felt like everytime I went to open a menu it took long enough to load that I could've went and made a sandwich and come back in plenty of time. If you don't midn that then yeah, they're all worth playing, especially FF4, which is the one that introduced the job system.
