Channel 4 has confirmed that one of their flagship television shows, E4's Skins, has been axed.

The racy teen drama will finish in 2013, after broadcasting its seventh series, reports The Guardian. A spokesperson for Channel 4 said:

Skins is a brilliant show which has defined a generation and will go down as a truly iconic, game-changing piece of television but after seven series it is time for E4 to make way for the next generation of the bold, the new and the innovative.

Metro reports that the show will bow out with three special farewell episodes next year, with possible appearances from a host of former cast members, including Nicholas Hoult from the programme's very first series, as well as Dev Patel and Kaya Scodelario.

The sixth series of Skins will be released on DVD on April 23. Of the most recent series Sean Teale, who plays Nick, told NME that the show's writers no longer felt the need to "break taboos" with the storylines but said that the series was also "more intense" than previous seasons of the show.

Asked if the show's writers feel they have to create "shocking" storylines, Teale replied: "In regards to the writing of it and whether the writers feel they have to, they don't. I don't think they write entirely to break every taboo, not now anyway." He added that he still thought the sixth series pushed boundaries.

I've never watched any of them, but I have heard it is the same drivel as most reality shows. Although if they actually showed some skin, I would probably change my mind.

Skins wasn't reality TV. And it was nothing like drivel like "Jersey Shore".

I've only seen the first two seasons and it wasn't too bad. It was very racy though, I guess they can get away with more over there.

I heard it was like reality TV in that they filmed real situations and what not. Guess I was wrong. Not the first time and certainly won't be the last time.

The first three seasons were excellent, kinda lost interest half way through 4 though.

I have heard of it and they say it was funny and pretty cool.
