I don't know if Japan releases autopsy reports to the media, and I didn't see the actual move performed but I am guessing if he died on impact perhaps he broke his neck or had a head injury(sometimes head, and neck injuries can be instantly fatal). Still it is very sad...poor guy.

^^ They're released to the public only if the family doesn't invoke their right to privacy which they have done in this case so it more than likely won't be released publicly.

It looks to me that he was already dead by the end of the video...

^They've restricted video of the backdrop, all they have is him being attended to after the match was halted.

Found this
The Mainichi Daily News out of Japan reported earlier today that the cause of death of Pro Wrestling NOAH founder and Japanese legend Mitsuharu Misawa was damage to his cervical spinal cord after taking a back suplex on his head.

That I find kinda hard to believe. Wasn't he the recipient of the first ever Ganzo bomb and probably about 20 or more burning hammers from Kobashi? I guess all that head droppage over the years must have done some damage.

Considering twenty some odd years of diving headbutts on Benoit's part gave him a brain resembling that of an eighty some-odd alzheimer's patient I'd say that it's entirely likely his brain was right fucked after so many years of wrestling the Japanese style.

This thing just keeps getting worse and worse.

Akitoshi Saito (The guy who delivered the Back Suplex), along with his family have been receiving death threats. It got to the point that Saito attempted suicide and it has been reported by a Tokyo news source that he is now under suicide watch.

In an attempt to prevent another in-ring death, the powers that be, had a meeting last night. Here's a brief summary of what was discussed.

There was a meeting yesterday it appears that everyone was in agreement about forming a union and there will be a push to introduce a license system. There was also a lot of talk about preventing such accidents in the future, including training for refs and wrestlers about how to observe the physical condition of their opponent, ring doctors, yearly medical checks, retirement age and so on.

An Organ Transplant Law amendment bill was also passed yesterday, which Misawa was supportive of. The bill recognises brain death as legal death and scrapped the age limit for organ transplants, which had previously been 15 years old.

..and they say wrestling isn't real

But seriously, this kind of shit sucks. Saito shouldn't be upset with himself, that kind of suplex is common and reportedly delivered more violently than what he did to Misawa (though I haven't seen the video to judge that, so who knows?). But Misawa had also been told not to wrestle for a while now and kept postponing surgery on his neck, and we see the results of that. And anyone threatening Saito should burn in hell.

It's crazy that the most important nerves run through the spine, and they don't even have to be damaged themselves to stop working. If the spine is damaged, the chemicals sent to the area freeze the nerves as well. No moving, no breathing. Probably loss of all senses. He probably could have survived if he would have been put on ice (see Kevin Everett of the Buffalo Bills who is now able to walk again) and given an air tube to assist his breathing for him.

This just underscores how real it is, and how appreciative we should be. These guys risk their bodies day in and day out, and that is to be commended.

"There will be a Mitsuharu Misawa Memorial Show taking place at the Differ Ariake Arena in Tokyo on Saturday, July 4.

The location is symbolic as it was the first place that ran a Pro Wrestling NOAH show and is next to the promotion’s headquarters. NOAH is getting help from both All Japan and New Japan promotions.

Apparently, John Laurinaitis wants WWE to take part as well, even if WWE barely had any type of history with Misawa. The only known history was a WWF/All Japan super show that they did in 1990 with Bret Hart facing Misawa in a singles match, the latter wrestling as Tiger Mask II at the time. Laurinaitis, on the other hand, was working for All Japan during the decade period when Misawa was the top guy. He even wrestled against him, though mostly in tag matches.

According to Wrestling ObserverFigure Four Online, the former Johnny Ace is using whatever push and pull he can to send a couple guys to participate on the show. It is being said that two guys he has in mind to send are World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk and Evan Bourne.

WWE does have a couple Japan shows scheduled for the SmackDown and ECW brands on July 7 and 8. However, the two brands are in San Diego, California on July 3 and Honolulu, Hawaii on July 5. Punk would be a long shot to take part in the Misawa Memorial Show. Even if he would want to go, which is probable since he was the only one to honor Misawa on last Monday’s Raw show, he is the World Heavyweight Champion and is being advertised for both the San Diego and Honolulu shows. Bourne is not advertised on either of the shows, so they would be more accepting of sending him.

Still, there is no official word if WWE will even give Johnny Ace the okay."
