(CNN) -- A South Korean navy ship was sinking in the Yellow Sea near North Korea early Saturday, and the navy was shooting at an unidentified ship toward the north, according to reports quoting South Korean government officials.

Yonhap News Agency quoted Navy officials saying Friday that a ship carrying 104 crew members was sinking off the Seoul-controlled island of Baengnyeong in a flashpoint area between the Koreas.

The 1,500-ton ship was sinking between 9 and 10 p.m. Friday near the island, but the cause of the incident was not immediately known, the officials said.

A rescue operation was under way. There were no immediate reports of casualties, but some sort of explosion occurred in the rear of the ship, officials told Yonhap.

The South Korean government issued a statement saying the reason for the incident remains unclear, but it wasn't ruling out some sort of military engagement.

Yonhap quoted naval officials as saying a South Korean vessel fired at a ship toward the north later. However, South Korean government officials said it isn't certain whether North Korea was involved in the incident. Yonhap said local residents reported hearing gunfire for about 10 minutes.

As a result of the incident, South Korean government officials held an emergency meeting of ministers handling security-related matters, officials told Yonhap.

Aides to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said the first priority is rescuing crew members, and the Defense Ministry said 58 members of the crew have been saved.

South Korea's Korean Broadcasting System said the ship, the Cheonan, was patrolling southwest of the island around 9:45 p.m. when the explosion took place, a military official said.

The official said Navy vessels and helicopters were rescuing crew members, some of whom reportedly jumped into the sea after the blast, the KBS report said.

The official said the Sockcho, another South Korean navy vessel patrolling nearby, fired at unidentified ships north of the area.

U.S. military officials told CNN a South Korean vessel has sunk.

North Korea has said recently it is bulking up its defenses in response to recent joint South Korean-U.S. military drills, Yonhap reported. The news agency also quoted South Korean military officials saying North Korea conducted dozens of artillery firing drills Friday.

Scary shit for South Korea as I have no doubt that Li'l Kim would have no problems using those nukes he has. Not sure though what role the US would have to play in this. I would assume that they would go to SK's aid but I am not sure if they have a pact that says they have to.

It is not confirmed that it was a military action on NK's part but given the location of the ship when it sunk it is hard to not believe that it was not.

Dude, its pretty much a guarantee that it was a NK military action. They monitor their borders tightly. Remember those reporters that Obama couldn't get out of there, but Bill Clinton could? They said that they stepped over the border from China and were immediately arrested by the NK army, who just popped in out of nowhere. Its only a matter of time before they try to use a nuke on SK, they have shit missiles terrible propulsion, if the test footage is to be believed. Kim Jong Ill is insane & should probably be eliminated, along with the rest of his family.

Nice article on the madness of Kim Jong Il, from 2003 so it doesn't have all the current madness.

I understand that and yeah it probably was a military action but you still can't completely rule out mechanical failure on the ship though.

Speculation time though. If NK hits SK with a nuclear missile will anyone have the balls to return the favour?

Pretty sure we already have minor operation going on in NK. Obviously if these two start battling, the U.S. will be sending in troops ASAP. NK will not be using any nuclear missles btw. They would not fire under a country that is directly below them.

I think you underestimate how batshit crazy Li'l Kim is. Plus if they have the wind blowing the right way it won't matter that SK is right below them.

Unless China approves it will not happen. Which I highly doubt that they will approve considering the enormous business that China makes in the U.S. and the huge debt that will be payed to China eventually. China can destroy their resources.

It continues to be very nerve racking in that part of the world. Kim Jong Il runs a junta style government. Many people are starving and just plain terrified. They have billboards of his face everywhere, very similar to Argentina and Hugo Chavez.

If you're from North America and you travel to North Korea, they'll tap your phone and have g-men surveil you everywhere.

It would be incredibly easy for China to just say that they disapprove. Shit they could even join in and officially annex North Korea.

While I've never served a tour in SK, I've served with many many many many many soldiers that have said that South Koreans are pretty much INDOCTRINATED to HATE North Koreans, at least from the military side. Supposedly they're raised from day one to think of the North as shitscum, and if the day arrives where they can go over the border, they're going to be hardcore and bent on eradicating the NK Forces.

Granted, this is just second hand, opinionated knowledge from people who've been there. The South Korean army (or ROK: Republic of Korea) are substantially tough though.
