Tampa Bay to host 2024 Royal Rumble

WWE, part of TKO Group Holdings, in conjunction with the Tampa Bay Rays, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, announced that Tampa Bay will host the 37th Royal Rumble in 2024.

WWE will head to town for an entire weekend of events across St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tampa, Fla., highlighted by the Royal Rumble on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Two days later, Monday Night Raw will emanate from Amalie Arena in Tampa on Jan. 29. This marks the first time that Royal Rumble will be held in Tampa Bay in front of fans since 1995.

“Tampa Bay has long been a terrific market for WWE,” said WWE Executive Vice President of Live Events John Porco. “Thanks to our partners at the Tampa Bay Rays, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, we look forward to a fantastic schedule of events in January.”

“We are excited to welcome WWE back to Tropicana Field for the 2024 Royal Rumble,” said Tampa Bay Rays President Matt Silverman. “The Royal Rumble will provide first-class sports entertainment to both those seeing the action in person and watching as part of a worldwide television audience. This event will bring visitors from around the globe to experience the beauty of our area and all it has to offer.”

“As a leader in event production and promotion, we are thrilled to collaborate with WWE to bring Royal Rumble to our destination,” Caleb Peterson, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater Senior Business Development Manager. “We look forward to welcoming all of the WWE fans to our community, a community that will certainly match their energy and enthusiasm for sports entertainment. A special thank you to our community partners - the Tampa Bay Rays, City of St. Petersburg, and Tampa Bay Sports Commission - for their role in creating this unique opportunity for our destination.”

“Team Tampa Bay loved hosting WrestleMania 37 two years ago and we’re now beyond excited to have the opportunity to collaborate again with our longtime friends at WWE,” said Rob Higgins, Tampa Bay Sports Commission Executive Director. “Royal Rumble Weekend in January of 2024 will be a phenomenal regional effort that spans Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties including both Tropicana Field and Amalie Arena. Together, we’re focused on making sure that WWE Universe is treated to a weekend that’s filled with memories that last a lifetime.”

Royal Rumble will be headlined by the 30-man and 30-woman Royal Rumble matches, with the winners of both receiving a Championship match opportunity at WrestleMania 40.

The announcement comes on the heels of this year’s record-setting Royal Rumble which took place in San Antonio, Texas. The event became WWE’s highest-grossing and most-viewed Royal Rumble in company history and set an all-time gate record at more than $7.7 million, far surpassing the previous Royal Rumble high in 2017 by more than 50 percent.

More information on the ticket on-sale will be announced in the coming weeks. Learn more about registering for pre-sale opportunities.

I'm disappointed in the logo. I love how Mania and now Summerslam would tie the logo into the city. To me all the Stadium Shows should be doing that and the fact that this is the generic logo they've used for years means either they didn't do that, or Tampa is such a generic city that they couldn't do anything.

Bleh... Couldn't care less for another bland looking Stadium show setup... At least the Rumble matches can't be worse than this year's (aside from the Gunther run, including the final stretch of the Men's Rumble)

Wouldn't it be a hoot if Samy Zayn one the Rumble we all think he's going for Roman again and then goes against Seth (I assume he'll have the belt still) and win the title.

This will be the third different venue in the Tampa Bay area to host a WWE Supercard in the past three years (Yuengling Center/Thunderdome, Raymond James Stadium, and not Tropicana Field). I guess the money St. Pete is getting for hosting the event must be pretty good as they just announced a deal to build a new stadium for the Rays.

The St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida tourism board spent $500,000 to bring this January's WWE Royal Rumble to Tropicana Field, beating out Orlando's considerably higher bid.

Speaking to The Catalyst, board PR director Jason Latimer revealed the number, saying the money came from tourism development tax funding which was accrued from hotel stays throughout Pinellas County.

The board is expecting over 40,000 fans for the event. County Commissioner Chris Latvala said last week that the Royal Rumble could break the attendance record at the stadium which is currently 47,150 for a 1990 New Kids on the Block concert.

“This is history-making,” Latvala added. “Not just for Pinellas County, but for the Tampa Bay area.”

The board did not release any economic projections, but has lofty expectations for the short and long-term impact the event could bring, according to board CEO Brian Lowack.

“The exposure and marketing benefits, and the visitation we’re going to get from this, are astronomical,” Lowack said. “We can take those monies that we collect from those visitors in their overnight stays and reinvest them in capital projects here, which will increase visitation.”
The dollar amount is less than the city of Orlando's $850,000 bid for the same event that would have been held at Camping World Stadium. They projected a potential $28 million economic impact on the city.

The revealed number is the latest in what WWE CEO Nick Khan has promised on previous quarterly shareholder calls: site fees from cities to host WWE pay-per-views/premium live events.

Recent examples include nearly $3 million from the Welsh government for September 2022's Clash at the Castle and $1.8 million in cash and subsidies from the Puerto Rico government for this past May's Backlash.
