No, a beat, a melody and harmony are all different things. Rap is usually just a beat and lyrics, not all, but most. Using the example of one song doesn't prove your point, it proves mine. A whole host of instruments are used in harmony to create a rock song, whilst rap is usually drums and electronic sounds repeating themselves as a rapper raps. They're very different.

Rap=Poetry. Rock=Music.

EDIT-Although, the best rappers (eg. Eminem) usually switch it up and bring more musical elements into their beats.

Rap isn't poetry, it's rhyming.

I don't really care about what genre is "better", it's all the same to me, as long as it sounds good. You can't really label some things as rap or rock or anything in between, it's just music.

Early to Mid 90s for Rap would be

Eazy E

NWA in general

them are probably the biggest

Rock for the early to mid 90s

Metallica
Nirvana
Korn
Pantera
Probably the best from that era

Edge goes to Rap there

Rap Now

Soulja Boy
.......
Lil Wayne....

Rock Now

FFDP
Slipknot
Korn
All That Remains
Metallica
Bullet for my valentine
Tool

Rock kills new Rap

Rap beats old Rock narrowly

You are an idiot. The artists you listed were hardly the biggest rock bands of the 90s, and the others you listed are hardly the biggest rock bands of today.

If it's era by era, rock was established a long time before rap, and if you list the real biggest rock bands of the 90s (Nirvana for example) rock wins out.

You've also left out a ton of rappers in both eras. Your comparison fails.

I understand now, but if you were going for the biggest bands/artists, you missed a lot.

Rap is almost all about lyrics, you can't have an instrumental rap song.

9th Wonder and DJ Premier both make instrumental mixtapes.

Why make this thread seriously? No matter who post their opinion its gonna sound bias. Rock and Rap both have numerous genres but half the ones people are listing, do radio stations call them by that genre? Besides grunge, metal, rock and alternative I've never heard a radio station that plays all music genres call it by any other name. Same for rap, the closest thing is they mention where the artist is from even then they still call it rap.

And Sterl is an idiot for that crap list of artist he named off.

None of those bands are rock that you listed. They're all a type of metal.

^What the fuck do you want him to base it on? if someone is asking what's better, obviously the answer is going to be opinions.
You can't base it on facts.

But, I challenge you how to prove without opinions that rap is better than rock..

More people would prefer to listen to rock than rap, thus making it better.

As for this question, my opinion is rock.
Both genres are so wide, because when talking about rock, people will include everything from the Jonas Brothers (fuck them) to Foo Fighters, to Nirvana, to Metallica, to Motorhead, to AFI. And with rap, people are going to span it from eminem to Kanye West to 50 cent to r&b, etc.

So, with that being said, when I choose this genre, there's many bands/artists in both genres that I hate.
But, IMO, the good in rock is better than the good in rap.
Rap is just too much focuses on the same shit. Girls, money, drugs, hats, shoes, and tits.
I was never, and never will be a rap fan anyways, but at least back in the day, I could have more respect for rap, and although I wouldn't choose rap as my favourite, I would choose rock, but the gap wouldn't be as big as it is now.
But IMO, rock is better. It's just more me. No other way to back that up. It's an opinion, and you can't have scientfic proof to prove rock is better than rap, but IMO, it is.
