WWE Hall of Famer Brian "Road Dogg" James reportedly stepped down as the co-lead writer for SmackDown Live this week.

According to PWInsider's Mike Johnson, Road Dogg informed WWE of his decision Wednesday. Johnson added that Road Dogg reportedly reached a "breaking point" at Tuesday's SmackDown in Brooklyn, New York, regarding WWE chairman Vince McMahon's script changes.

The 49-year-old Road Dogg began working as a producer with WWE in 2011 before becoming part of the creative team. He had been SmackDown's co-lead writer along with Stephen Guerrieri since 2016.

While Road Dogg has yet to publicly comment on his status, he tweeted the following Wednesday:

Prior to settling into a backstage role with WWE, Road Dogg was an in-ring competitor. He started with WWE as The Roadie in 1994 before becoming Road Dogg and forming a tag team with Billy Gunn called The New Age Outlaws.

Road Dogg and Gunn joined D-Generation X and went on to become one of the most successful tag teams in WWE history with six WWE Tag Team Championship reigns together. Road Dogg is also a former Intercontinental and Hardcore champion.

Last week, Road Dogg was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of DX along with Gunn, X-Pac, Triple H, Shawn Michaels and the late Chyna.

WWE has not released a statement on Road Dogg's status, and it is not clear if he will remain with the company in a different role.

While I like Road Dogg in general, this could just what the blue brand needs before it heads to Fox.

Never really keep track of who's writing much anyway so this isn't much of a big deal for me, ain't the first dude upset with Vince's rewrites for sure

I don't if the show is entertaining, but when the product slips I tend to find out who's the one doing it and honestly Road Dogg was at the helm when it really began to slip so if he quit because Vince was interjecting a lot lately, for once I have to side with Vince because the product has been so much better lately.

That's fair I just feel there's so many moving parts between writers, producers, Vince, and the actual wrestlers that it's hard to pinpoint exactly who the problem is so I just never really fuck with it.

There's only ONE writer... the rest are just idea men.

Funny how Ryan Ward who was supposedly the creative genius who made NXT what it is now, was under Road Dogg in the hierarchy.....people seemed to forget his name.

The fact NXT still gets the buzz that it does shows that you can't undervalue what Triple H himself does for the brand.

That said, you can definitely tell when writers change in WWE. Creative does change a lot of from head writer to writer. Vince McMahon's greatest asset is he's the filter, but he's not really the writer himself. He doesn't really write full TV. He takes what is handed to him and makes changes. Road Dogg just didn't like being filtered I guess.
