Referees now nameless, ECW commentary edited

-- WWE recently issued a directive prohibiting the commentators from mentioning the names of the referees during television broadcasts.

-- A few comments made on commentary following the Evan Bourne vs. John Morrison match on last week's episode of ECW were edited out of the show's replay over the weekend (which airs on Universal HD on Saturday nights). Matt Striker used the term "match of the year candidate" with Josh Matthews calling it a "five-star match." Both terms were stricken from the replay.

So...why don't they want the referees to be named exactly?

Earl Hebner, & Mike Chioda must have violated the wellness policy. Roided up referee's for extra powerful counts for the win.

What is the point of having them no longer named when we have had them named pretty much the whole time and a heap of people know who they are now, it just seems pointless.

I kinda understand where they are coming with the commentary thing. In kayfabe, saying how good a match is (in terms of rates or like that), instead of how vicious the competitors were looking for the victory is a little contradictory.

Then again, they base HBK's character on exactly this, so yeah, I don't know.

pointless? i dont agree with them but they're not pointless. "five star match" and "MOTY candidate" are smark terms referencing smarks' match rating system, etc. so using them would break kayfabe in a way. there's a lot of other ways to describe the match. or it was simply so they don't degrade other real five star matches.

as for the referees, when i first read it i thought it made sense but my damn internet went down and now i forgot. damn :tdk:

So its wrong to praise a match? At least they didn't say "well, they could have done better"

is that what you understood from my post? seriously?

its not wrong to praise a match, its wrong to use SMARK TERMS doing so. it could also be wrong to praise a squash match like its the best ever.

Smark terms? Really, TDK?

By them calling a match five star, or a MOTY candidate, they're not "breaking kayfabe", what they're doing is calling a great match... a great match.

God forbid that announcers actually try to give some love, and put over the younger guys when they put on a great match.

Well, they never edited out the Jushin Lyger references that Striker would continue to make, and that's alot more smarky then 5 star matches imo.

By the way, I have to ask this.

If RVD were to return, does this mean that his finisher would no longer be called the 5-Star Frog Splash? You know, what with 5-star being a smark term and all.
