Okay, I know for a fact that ratings will go up, even if TNA doesn't increase their fanbase.
You guys' visions of how the Neilson ratings work are flawed on a fundamental level. Overall ratings aren't veiwers per unit time, but rather a unit called veiwer-minutes. It works just like man-hours in the workplace.
Previously, TNA had 60 minutes, so their 1 million viewers, if they watched the whole thing, front to back, no channel surfing, would come out to 6 million viewer-minutes, which simplifies into an overall Neilson rating of 1.0. Smackdown, on the other hand, has twice the ratings, but they also have twice the time. In Neilson terms, these two exactly cancel each other, leading to a roughly equal regular fanbase.
Now that TNA is getting two hours, their ratings can double, even if they don't gain a single new fan, and so they'll be competing with Smackdown.
