Not to mention the best in the world gimmick is something he took from another member of the current WWE roster. I get TGMTEL AA has the same deal, but to me it's a mockery of DB, who is clearly the better superstar, in every single way.

Yeah, been wondering why he mentions Aries during his entrance every time he shows up.

Punk was using the BITW moniker before DBD lol, he commonly referred to himself as the BITW during the original Summer of Punk in 04. Danielson adopted the moniker during his title reign a year or so after.

But wasn't Bryan already then called the best in the world among the fans? The moniker was already on him but not adopted by him as a part of his actual character.

I don't think so, Punk was considered BITW during his first year in the company by a lot of the fanbase if I remember correctly, also Danielson lacked many notable matches until around 2004/2005 ( a ridiculous but easy example is to see his DVDs, they all start with matches from 2004) so I doubt many classed him as the best at that time. He also had a bigger following than Danielson, possibly the biggest on the entire scene at the time alongside Samoa Joe (who also holds a claim to being regarded as the BITW before Danielson). The majority of that fanbase regarded him as the best so it would have been more Punk than Danielson anyway. Kind of irrelevant when we're discussing their gimmick portrayals, although the entire theory is flawed when you consider the countless others who have used the generic persona.

His return will likely be just like that of Triple H returning in MSG in January 2002. You leave as a heel (HHH was far more hated as a heel back then than Punk has been recently) but you return to a huge pop and then you run with it. Punk doesn't kiss up or ponder to the crowd but he doesn't insult them either. Punk will still show an allegiance to a heel Heyman for the sake of continuity but that'll break off within a month or two months at the very most. Just like HHH/Stephanie all the same.

Brock/Punk feud would be too easy to set up if this is the case. I would mark so hard for Punk getting the shit stiffed out of him by Borky Bork.

The obvious set up to me and others has to do with the rumors of Brock winning the world title again later in the year. If Brock wins a belt and Punk returns and wants the title, then the feud is set up. From there on, perhaps Heyman is forced to choose between the two of them and goes with Brock OR Brock attacks Punk before that can happen and then Punk roundhouse kicks Heyman when he tries one time too many to stop him from going after Brock for revenge. I have a few different ideas on how this could be booked.

The interesting thing is that Brock might be winning the WHC instead of the WWE Title. Brock putting the replica of the WHC on his shoulder while ripping the office apart on Raw was probably foreshadowing (him staring at The Rock's poster certainly was, why not this?), which is interesting since it means one part timer wins one world title, the other wins the other. It also means that Brock's title defenses and feuds could be a semi main event, instead of the headline so people should be a lot less annoyed if Brock misses a show here or there as world champ.

Punk could return earlier than expected and win the MITB briefcase for the WHC while Brock is champ OR Punk could return while Brock is already champ and say that he made history with his long WWE Title reign and now he wants to do the same with the WHC, which Brock just happens to hold. I like the second option better.
