I got the idea that they really didn't know what they're talking about, which frightened me more than anything. I have my problems and don't think I ever really got the help I needed, but there are people who are much worse off than me and they might not get the help either.
I'm not trying to make myself look like any sort of genius or anything, but I was often disturbed in college by the amount of psychology students who had trouble understanding the basic concepts of psychology and who are now practicing therapists. That's one of the major reasons I went into research instead of therapy. There are too many therapists out there who would rather try to tell you something not based on psychological theory in an effort to prove that they know better than the founding fathers of psychology. Too many of them also care more about their paycheck, which they get by telling the parents what they want to hear than actually helping people. Personally, I can't do that.
