Think the Wii is the only console that has motion control? Think again. This fall both Sony and Microsoft will enter the motion control market with their respective motion control devices. Let's see what the PlayStation Move and Project Natal have to combat the Wii.

PlayStation Move

The Move is a motion-sensing peripheral, which in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye Camera (which is already on the market) allows precise motion-controlled video gaming on the PlayStation 3.

The Move can, in some cases, be paired with the "Subcontroller", a nunchuk-like device that sports an analog stick and d-pad, which allows the Move to be used with more "traditional" titles like first-person shooters or role-playing games.

Unlike the Wii Remote, which is powered by regular batteries (or in cases of third-party solutions a rechargeable battery pack), the Move is fuelled by the same lithium ion battery that runs your PlayStation 3's DualShock 3 controller, meaning it'll have plenty of shelf life between recharges. As a bonus, the Subcontroller also has a lithium ion battery.

Both the Move and Subcontroller are wireless, and will sync with your PlayStation 3 via Bluetooth (with the Move also featuring rumble). At launch, they will be available in black, and black only.

In addition, the controller is said to include facial tracking, voice recognition, rumble functionality, and body motion recognition. Also, the controller can output the user’s image on the television screen.

Basically the Move uses a camera that tracks your movements. Much like Project Natal. But the Move has 1:1 tracking which makes it extremely accurate and responsive to your movements. The move also has a sub controller which it pretty much it's version of the Wii's Nunchuck. The Move is also messing around with recognition as well. Again like Natal.

Pricing: The PlayStation move will be bundled with the PS3 for a TBD amount. The Move can be purchased without the bundle. It comes with the Move itself, the PlayStation Eye(Camera), and a demo game for under $100.

Battery Life: The move controller itself has 10 hours and the sub controller has 30 hours. But like the Dualshock 3 the Move doesn't require batteries. It just needs to be recharged.

Games: Certain PS3 games such as LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM 4, and Eyepet will support it via a patch. Games made for the Move include so far Motion Fighter, Move Party, Sports Champions(Wii Sports competitor), The Shoot, and future games to be announced.

Project Natal

project-natal-sensor-xbox.jpg

project-natal_ripple.jpg

On it's simplest level, Project Natal is a straight forward motion control for the Xbox 360, one that doesn't use a controller. But the technology can also be used to sign you into your 360 automatically, let you play classic 360 titles without a controller and even interact with a child-like, uncanny-free artificial intelligence.

Described by Microsoft personnel as the primary innovation of Project Nata the software technology enables advanced gesture recognition, facial recognition, and voice recognition. The skeletal mapping technology shown at E3 2009 was capable of simultaneously tracking up to four users for motion analysis, with a feature extraction of 48 skeletal points on a human body at a frame rate of 30 hertz. Depending on the person's distance from the sensor, Project Natal is capable of tracking models that can identify individual fingers.

So this doesn't use a controller. You are the controller. This also tracks your movements with a camera like the PlayStation Eye. It also apparently can recognize use via facial recognition.

Pricing: No price set has been announced yet. Sources have said at first the price will be high but it will decrease in price over time.

Battery Life: ?

Games: No games have actually been announced yet. Only some demos exist and a list of developers who are working with the tech.

Natal = Innovative.

Move = Rip-Off.

Couldn't Sony have been a little sneaker with there rip off?

If you goin to rip of another controller at least rip off Xbox, Triggers = Way of the future.

Natal looks so much better, Move's controller looks like a dildo

lol Sony started using motion control before Nintendo actually. Keep these kinds of posts in the console wars thread, please.

^Actually you are correct there, when the PS3 first came out, playing NBA 2K8 was so sick. I thought moving the controller up and down to shoot was pretty challenging but cool!

But imo 360> PS3

As far as everything you posted, Natal looking wise looks better, but Move seems to have more of an advantage when you look at the game aspect, but this is too early to tell whats going to work with what games, etc.

Natal is a pretty neat idea but I don't really see much coming from either of these developments right away.

Sony's idea sucks because if people wanted a Wii type experience I'm inclined to think that people would've just purchased a Wii.

And like I said, Natal is really cool but I am not convinced that they will be able to effectively adapt the game play to this generation of consoles. I think Natal will be a real pioneer for how this technology is used later but for now both new products are really going to cater to niche markets.

Also, Milo is really fucking creepy.

Didn't see that thread til after this one so I'll just talk about how pumped I am for Natal.

Honestly it looks fuckin awesome, the possibilities with it, how about a UFC game where you literally punch and kick the shit out of your opponent, Call of Duty where you run, shoot and duck, Football where you can run out of pockets and send it out in hope of a catch.

I honestly don't see a reason why people would hate it, Of course it will probably have a few bugs at first, everything does but once they have it running at full capability there is going to be no reason people could hate it.

Also for the battery life, pretty sure it will just be wired for a while until sales show weather or not to make a wireless.

It's not really a "Wii type experience". The PlayStation Move has the PS3's raw power to use. Which means taking advantage of Blu Ray Space and the HD graphics that the PS3 possesses. The PlayStation Move is also going to be a bit more accurate due to it having 1:1 tracking. It also has unlimited battery life, rumble support and Sony is messing around with recognition. It's obviously extremely similar but the Move will have some huge advantages over the Wii.

Personally, I like the Move. It's not going to have any problems with accuracy which at the moment, Natal is having major problems with. Chances are it will get better but it doesn't have complete accuracy. I also highly prefer to have something to hold.

See, I'm not as informed on the subject and I am too lazy to do any real research at the moment so I'll take your word for it. Even though you are a Sony fanboy. :D

My biggest concern regarding Move I guess would be, how intuitive is it going to be? Will the experience be as easy to learn and as organic as using a controller and will what I am doing feel like it has purpose and sense as opposed to some of the random wild gesticulating I have seen done with the Wii?

If it can lead to more immersive game play then I am all for it.

Well that all depends. I find playing sport type activities with motion control to be far superior to playing sports games with a controller. Sports games have evolved with the help of Motion Control. The "wild gesticulating" the Wii has is due to the developers faults for just throwing in motion control with nothing else. Some games are exceptions but the vast majority of games tend to use that strategy. Hopefully with the Move we will see games that are fun to play with motion control but also might have a story and overall better sense of purpose.

Wasn't the PS3's standard remote supposed to originally use motion controls or have a similar feature built in? I thought that was part of the reason it was so expensive during it's original release. If not, I'm glad I save 500 clams and got an XBreak 360.

I don't like the Move, the Wii sucks ass and I don't want my PS3 to become like that. Natal is a great idea in concept, but like Monk said, I can't imagine them getting beyond the basics without it being too buggy to be playable. I think games should just be games.

If I wanted to play football or basketball, i'd just go outside and do it, I don't wanna run 5000 miles just to play a meaningless game with nobody. I could see it helping with games like RPGs and stuff but in the end, i'd prefer a controller and just stick certain minigames to the Move/Natal.
