I think he was pissed off over how shambolic WWE became, especially with that gross "Legends Night" debacle, and finally said, "Fuck it, I'm outta here."

He probably wanted to have a role someplace other than just to be a legend that shows up 2 or 3 times a year. WWE wasn't willing to give him what he wanted and so he went for fresher pastures. Makes sense.
