Even though we'll never see it highlighted the royal Rumble that Benoit won was my favourite because it had good writing up to the event even though it looked like Cena was the main character in the story it was nice to see the rabid wolverine go out first and stay there.

It also lead to my favourite wrestlemania moment of all time with Eddie and Chris celebrating together.

The one where Chris Jericho wins (if it ever happens) will be a close second though!

I rewatched the Benoit Rumble (2004 I think? Wasn't really paying attention to what year it was) and of the few Rumble matches I have seen, I think that one had the best story, with an appropriate Ernest "The Cat" Miller comedy spot in the middle and it made Orton look strong.

I'll enjoy reading this. Interested to see what you think of my favorite RR's, 2000 and 2001.

1989 Royal Rumble. *** This was mostly good in my mind for Big John Stud. He had been a bad guy for so long and seeing him not only as a good guy but also the winner of the Rumble was enjoyable. Going back, it was interesting seeing a lot of guys as they were younger and brought back some memories. But most of these will bring back memories. Fun seeing Shawn Michaels back as a Rocker with the big fluffy hair.

Well I am watching them out of order so I hope it doesn't get confusing. After posting ratings for the ones I have written so far, I'll go back to 1990 and try the rest in order. I am watching the 2000 one as we speak. Interestingly enough, it is my second favorite Rumble ever after 1992.

Royal Rumble 2000 ***** This was an example of WWE doing everything right. There was so much in this match. We had the one guy who dominated the ring for a while in Rikishi. We had great commentary from Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross. There was story telling with Kai en tai coming into the ring over and over. I thought it was great how Taka Michinoku's famed moment will probably be Jerry Lawler asking to watch his being thrown out of the ring over and over again. Even the controversial ending made for more story telling on Raw. This was, in my opinion, as near to a perfect Rumble as you can get after 1992. The headbangers were fun, Rikishi was great. I regret not watching it live.

2008 ***1/2 This was mostly the set up for Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker, which ended up being one of the greatest matches in professional wrestling history. With this story telling plus the amazing entry of John Cena at number 30... hell, I jumped out of my chair and said "Holy shit!" But this was still a fun Rumble and although it is not one I like to watch over and over again, it was an enjoyable one.

2017 ***1/2 I watched this one by accident. For some reason my YouTube channel went to it and I decided just to go with it. That is why I began watching them out of order. I think I thought the match was underwhelming when I first watched it, but the second time around it was much better. It was a solid match and although I don't really like Randy Orton, I do like how the match plowed along. They should have had some shocking surprise entrants and that was really the only thing missing.

1990 Royal Rumble *** This Rumble was something I really enjoyed as a kid but I find it hard to enjoy it now. This was before the Rumble winner got to main event Wrestlemania. Hulk Hogan was the champion and he won the Rumble. It was really just WWF's attempt to start a feud between the Ultimate Warrior and Hogan. They did a very good job of that, with Warrior helping Hogan and then Hogan eliminating the Warrior.

Other than that, the match was slow. Tony Schiavonne's commentary was pretty lame and we were fortunate to have Jesse Ventura on color. But a Royal Rumble is a lot like sex, even when it is bad, it is good. So this Rumble was enjoyable. The Million Dollar Man put on a great heel performance. My favorite tag team at the time, the Strike Force broke up and they fought in the Rumble. But other than that, there was nothing special in this match. It was a vehicle for Hogan and kept with the idea that Hogan can't really be beat in anything. It was good when WWF eventually made the Rumble a contest to get to Wrestlemania. This kept the champion out of the Rumble because this was the ONLY time a reigning world champion won the Rumble. It shouldn't done again.

But watch this one, if for anything, one of the last performances by the legendary Andre the Giant. You can tell he is in pain and can't move like he used to. But it is wonderful anyway.

1991 Royal Rumble *** this is the last Rumble that didn't mean anything. It was the last Rumble that the winner didn't get anything special. The winner, of course, was Hulk Hogan because Hulk Hogan won almost everything back then. He last eliminated John Tenta, the Earthquake (who in real life was one of the nicest men ever).

There were two stories in this Rumble. The obvious one was Hulk Hogan surviving and becoming the first two time winner of the Royal Rumble. But the more interesting one to me was the Model Rick Martel. Martel was the first heel that I ever liked. Being a big fan of the Strike Force, I was devastated when they broke up. But I couldn't bring myself to hate Martel. It might have been because I am gay and Martel really is a good looking man. But I think it was because Martel was one of the most under appreciated wrestlers in history. I was always a fan and always will be. He lasted over 50 minutes in the Rumble and he kept going the whole time. He was appreciated by Roddy Piper and Gorilla Monsoon, which is important.

Other than that, there were some good performances in the Rumble. Earthquake lasted a long time for a man of his size. There were some hints of future greatness, such as a young Shane Douglas being in the Rumble. It was also the first time someone did not come into the Rumble, when Macho King Randy Savage left the building. An enjoyable Rumble whose importance was gone following 1992.

Good call...Rick Martel was always underrated...& he was an incredibly handsome man...
hence the Model gimmick.

For some unknown reason...Fandango reminds me of him...and you could say Tyler Breeze
has the same gimmick in 2017.

He last eliminated John Tenta, the Earthquake (who in real life was one of the nicest men ever).
Oh Cool...You have actually met Tenta...Nice.

I always thought he was pretty mobile for a
guy of his size...and the Natural Disasters
were are pretty awesome team late 80's/
early 90's.

1992 Royal Rumble ***** What can I say about this classic match? There aren't many people who can list a battle royal as one of their defining matches. You don't get a lot of technical wrestling, it usually is nothing but a big brawl. But Ric Flair asked Vince McMahon to go in early so he could wrestle a long match and show the WWF crowd what he could do. Although Ric had and would still have classics in WCW and the NWA, this was probably the defining match of his first WWF run.

Also, this match was the first to give the Royal Rumble importance. Ric Flair won the WWF championship by winning the Rumble. Afterward, the Rumble became more than just an exhibition match. It mattered because the winner would almost always get a match in the main event of Wrestlemania.

There are so many stars in this match. You see early HBK, the amazing Roddy Piper, Undertaker... for the third Rumble in a row you get Tito Santana and Rick Martel tearing each other apart. But this match is Flair's match. He is the reason to watch it and he puts on the performance of a lifetime.

The Rumble match seems to be divided into two sections. At one point, Flair ends up as the only man in the match. Then Roddy Piper comes in and the ring slowly fills up again. But it is enjoyable from the first moment until the end. The only other Rumble that comes close to being this entertaining is 2000.

Such a great Rumble...so many great moments...

Davey Boy drawing #1 (Man he was over in 1992)
Roddy Piper pulling double duty & lasting 35 minutes...
Jake the Snake hiding from Randy Savage...
Old School Taker choking everyone out...
Sid Justice launching Sgt. Slaughter out of the ring...
Hogan being dumped...
And of course...
Ric Flair going 1 hour & 2 seconds to win the WWE Championship...

But let us not forget Bobby Heenan on commentary with so many
classic lines...such as...

"THIS ISN'T FAIR TO FLAIR!!!"
&
"Did you see that? Flair just tried to lift the Undertaker!"

BEST.RUMBLE.EVER!

Maybe...2001 was pretty amazing as well...

This Rumble was Heenan's greatest performance as a commentator. I am shocked I didn't mention that because he added so much to it. I was glad I was at home and not in the arena. It was his performance of a lifetime.

Royal Rumble 1993 *** This is a weird one for me because technically this was my first PPV purchase. After this, I got all of the WCW and WWF PPVS until both companies started doing one a month... then I had to choose between them. But this one, even though it wasn't that great, holds a special place in my heart.

There are times when this Rumble is really slow. It's probably why the following year, they sped it up to 90 seconds. But there are good moments. Mr Perfect and Ric Flair have some awesome moments and Yokozuna belly to belly suplexing Earthquake out of the ring was great to see. At the time, Yoko was wearing padding and wasn't as big as they made him out to be. You can tell when they do close ups of him. But I was always a bit of a Yoko fan and I am glad he won. Not a particularly wonderful wrestler, but I liked him for some reason.

Anyway, this is one I have seen a million times for nostalgia reasons. But without nostalgia, you might have problems watching it. It's important to keep in mind this is the first Rumble that had the winner go to the Wrestlemania main event. So historically it is important. But it is only mildly interesting.
