No, last year's mania was amazing, it had an awesome card.
Everything about that card was an afterthought, no real build up to anything other than Rock/Cena at all. Even Jericho/Punk and Taker/HHH had a really cliched and cheesy build. Does anyone even remember Randy Orton vs Kane and Team Johnny vs Teddy happened? Or that there was a Divas tag match involving Mario Menouous? Or what about Big Show winning the Intercontinental Championship only to lose it the PPV after?
Minus Taker/HHH, Punk/Jericho (which is still pretty shit in comparison compared to their match at ER) and the surprising Dbry/Sheamus outcome, WM 28 was pretty awful. And yes, that includes Rock/Cena. Obviously that bit is debatable based on how much nostalgia you have, but the match was pretty shitty regardless.
The way this mania was run was bad. There was not enough build up for any of their feuds.
Actually, I thought otherwise. When comparing the build this year to feuds from last years WM like Randy Orton vs Kane, they did a pretty exceptional job. I rather liked the undercard. It served a much greater purpose than last years one and felt a lot less like filler and a lot more like attractions. Smaller attractions obviously than the big three matches, but still attractions.
I mean we had Jericho take on Fandango because he pronounced his name wrong...that was a mania match.
Yeah it didn't have much of a build up, but it was still much more interesting to watch than a random throwaway match that the last few Wrestlemanias have been plagued by. After all, it was a new wrestler having his in-ring debut at Wrestlemania against Chris Jericho.
Then Punk vs Taker had no steam until Bearer died.
... That's most likely because Paul Bearer died a day and a half (correct me if I'm wrong) after the match was announced, to which point there was no build at all. After that they were able to turn it into a very convincingly personal feud that in my opinion stole the show. I'm sure even without Paul dying they would've be able to turn it into a convincing feud.
HHH vs Brock was crippled by no one caring and not having a true reason to fight
I found that match to be pretty well built, actually. At least compared to Cena/Rock. They didn't just completely forget about the feud when Brock wasn't there as Heyman was there to fill in for him, and when he was there they used him to the fullest. Though the match was awful, I really couldn't complain about the build.
Even Cena vs Rock was hurt by Rock not competing or even showing up every week.
I wouldn't say "even", as that was ironically the worst booked feud on the entire card. But that's probably just because of how biased I am towards
a feud that lasted three years for the soul purpose of giving the rub to a wrestler that didn't need any rub to begin with. Everything about that build was forced. From the hourly recaps on every show for the past two years, to the in ring promo's, to the matches in general. And look what it accomplished, absolutely nothing. It wiped long time fans clean of nostalgia to the point where they just want The Rock to go away, it somehow made fans hate the top face in the company even more and its done nothing to produce new stars whatsoever. Obviously from a business standpoint it was amazing, but from a fans point of view it was awful. Yeah, the first few promos were pretty cool but the exact same thing has been done for three years now with a payoff that resulted in an awful match that even the fans in attendance didn't care about.
I think long term the 'E is in a good position, what with NXT shining with major talent and guys like The Shield and Cesaro already on the main shows. However, right now I think is going to be an awful time for the 'E, probably worse than what the last month has been like. Especially if this means a long Cena reign.
