Final Fantasy XIII is a Video Game being developed by Square Enix in Japan for the Playstation 3. The game is an RPG (Role Playing game) where players play the rolls of various characters as the games story unfolds. The game is the thirteenth installment of the Final Fantasy series, but is nor a sequel or prequel, merely a new story, following the broad traditions of the Final Fantasy series in it's gameplay and story elements. It was announced during E3 2006 on May 8. There is no scheduled release date at this time.
Final Fantasy XIII has been in development since roughly 2004. This is known as Square Enix has said that the game was originally being developed for the Playstation 2, but after they created the Final Fantasy VII Technical Demo for PS3 for May 2005's E3, they moved the the project from PS2 development to PS3.
The game is being developed using Square Enix's newest game engine, the Crystal Tools, formerly the White Engine. Information on the game's story and gameplay have been scarce since it's unveiling, but a few tidbits known are the leader character is a woman by the codename of Lightning, and that it starts with a conflict between the floating city of Cocoon, and the world beneath it, Pulse.
The developers designing and producing Final Fantasy XIII want to revolutionize the RPG formula. They're looking at the bare bones of it, the "you go into town, talk to people, go out of town, enter battles" (FFXIII Producer, Yoshinori Kitase), they're looking to reinvigorate that flow in particular. Furthermore, Square Enix is looking to simulate the incredible fast pace of the cinematic battles from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children in Final Fantasy XIII. The Battle Director of FFX is handing the development of FFXIII's Battle System.
The 360 version will start development in 2009.
