Lol f*ck the Lib Dems. There is a reason they come third in every single fucking election. No one cares about their candy asses. How you can complain about something being expensive when it is the countries only defence against nuclear weapons is beyond me.

And Cole I find it highly offensive you saying that British army is fags apart from the SAS. My grandad risked his life in both world wars. British army is up there with the best in the world.

Dude, my Uncle's been in the army for years risking his life but I still think the same, and that wasn't my point anyway, they are fags because they will do anything to please the US, at no point did I say the army is bad, imo we are fags as we'll die protecting the US but that doesn't mean I don't respect the soldiers, it's the government sending us in against countries we have no right fighting against.

4th top spending for military? I understand the need for defence but while we have OAPs who can't afford their heating in the winter or unemployment levels as high as they are and we're cutting engagement funds due to financial issues I can't see how it's justifiable to be that high.

Supporting our allies and doing anything to save the US is completely different. If we were doing things to save the US we'd be sending troops to Korea.

:mad2:

He was clearly talking about the decision makers who decide to kiss the US's ass and do whatever we ask of them. He wasn't shitting on your Grandfather or any other military man who served your country. For you to be able to take his comments in that way and misconstrue them to trick yourself into being 'highly offended' then you need to stop being such a Blue, sniveling vagina.

Last year over £102bn was spent on OAPs. We're a relatively small country/group of islands but we're still one of the top countries in the world. :dawg:

Lmao don't be a dick, you know that isn't what I meant, why would we go in against Korea when the US aren't even fighting them yet? We were spending just as much time out in Iraq fighting as the US and that wasn't our war, I get supporting them but don't spend just as much time out there when we had nothing to do with it. Dirk's post was spot on btw, it's embarrasing that we spend so much pon military when we have huge amounts of homeless people and OAP's not being able to afford essentials whilst scrub's with no job and 12 kids live comfortably in their own house.

So? How much of that went to people who actually needed the support? The problem still exists when we're funding not our wars but America's, we need an armed force absolutely but we're using it incorrectly. We don't need soldiers battling the war on terror or whatever just because big brother uncle Sam wants to go police the world. Also you can be a strong force by building your home defence not deploying soldiers and funding basis in some 3rd world country we feel we need to save.

That's an issue for every country, it's not isolated to the UK. I agree that we don't need as much spending as that considering our size, and our allies. Whilst we shouldn't overly rely on the US, it's not a bad super power to rely on. However, it's times like this when we're a little bit grateful that our military is powerful. If it wasn't, imagine how vulnerable a country like us would be to nuclear blackmail. To make the capitalistic change happen, you need to be powerful. Whilst that is quite ironic, it's damn true.

Whilst I lol'd, that's kind of mislead I think. The UK isn't simply following the US, I firmly believe the UK is behind the invasions WITH the US, and not FOR the US. The two are the closest of allies, and when you're that close, you back them up regardless. If we went into war now we would 100% expect the US to get their asses in gear to destroy our opponents, that's how it is. If the US are going to go into war with North Korea, I suggest you prepare for UK troops to help them out.

I completely agree with the latter. It's how North Korea got to become one of the most powerful military forces around. They didn't concentrate on anybody but themselves. I would love to see the UK have more back bone though. There is no reason for UK troops to be in Iraq or Afghanistan at the moment (same goes for US), and bringing them back will save us money and help keep our troops safe.

- What's the point of having a great military if you aren't looking after your own people though? When we have so many struggling back home due to budget cuts I still can't justify it being that high, I understand the need for defence absolutely but do we need to spend that much? Especially when we're so closely link to America (probably the biggest spenders, cba to look it). Shouldn't they be watching our back more? If so why can't we slash the spending in half (TOO DRASTIC A CUT BUT YOU GET THE EXAMPLE) and either cut our defence but use American support more or pull the troops out and focus solely on defending our land. I don't see why we need to spend such a large amount to defend such a small piece of land personally.

I understand the need for strong allies but being linked so closely to America leaves us incredibly vulnerable as a whole, everyone wants to knock America off their pedestal and we're a major part of it now which IMO is the wrong approach, we should be a minor supporting player who'll offer support when it's required to America not some Johnny come lucky who'll jump at their every demand. It may have been our idea to push into Iraq or Afghanistan but it's America's war on terror let's be honest, it's their fight and we're just the fall guys who'll spout our positive propaganda as another example of how it's working.

Politics in general leave me bored and confused usually so I've dumbed it down for my own sake, apologies in advance.

"We always kill the good guys who tell us that and let the demons run a muck"

Even though we all know it's true you can't deny that really makes you think.

Not really.

"The United States and its close allies are responsible for two-thirds to three-quarters of the world's military spending"
"The 2009 U.S. military budget accounts for approximately 40% of global arms spending."
