Title Bouts, Dogpound Cage Highlight Dontaku Weekend

Annual festival headlined by shock IWGP bout

The Dontaku festival is an annual highlight of the Fukuoka event calendar, a celebration of the port town's international leaning history. That festival also coincides with Wrestling Dontaku every year, with Fukuaoka's International Center the traditional home of two big events each May. This year, turbulent and tumultuous scenes have led to big matchups on both nights, and some special guests as well.

May 3: BULLET CLUB's Bloody Birthday, Takeshita's secret partner!
0503_7.jpg

Wrestling Dontaku has a significant place in the memories of fans for the 2013 birth of BULLET CLUB. 12 years on from its founding, the Club has been shaken to its foundations with a civil war between the War Dogs and HOUSE OF TORTURE, a war that will see its final battleground set as the Dogpound Steel Cage.

David Finlay issued the challenge for the violent bout after SANADA turned his back on an already shaky alliance with the War Dogs, joining H.O.T. This violent, dangerous bout sees entrants from each side join the ring until all ten members are involved, and one pinfall or submission ends the anything goes bout. The only other Dogpound Steel cage match saw the War Dogs emerge victorious over United Empire in a bout that permanently changed all involved in it. Finlay was victorious that night and Will Ospreay left NJPW in the aftermath; who will score the decisive final shot in this war?

0503_6.jpg

Special singles action will see Shota Umino take on Shingo Takagi. Windy City Riot saw Umino challenge Hirooki Goto for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, but the New Japan Cup runner up struggled in the face of champion Goto in Chicago. Having to rebuild once again, the Roughneck will take on Takagi, having defeated the Dragon in the New Japan Cup semifinals. For Umino, victory is essential in a year of hot and cold; for Takagi a win could propel himself into top title contention ahead of Resurgence later in May and Dominion in June.

0503_5.jpg

Hiroshi Tanahashi's Final Road will continue with a Kinship match against Zack Sabre Jr. Tanahashi vs ZSJ has been one of the Ace's most significant rivalries in recent years, and this is one of a very significant few matches that has graced both Madison Square Garden and the Tokyo Dome. When it did take place in the Tokyo Dome back at Wrestle Kingdom 18, Tanahashi upset Sabre for the NJPW World TV Championship; will the Briton get his win back in likely his last match against the NJPW President?

0503_4.jpg

Night one of Dontaku will also see El Phantasmo and Jado face Konosuke Takeshita and a mystery partner. Backstage at Windy City Riot, ELP issued a challenge to NEVER Openweight Champion Takeshita for Resurgence on may 9 in Ontario California. No sooner had the challenge been issued though then Rocky Romero, who'd had a tough time teaming with rival Phantasmo earlier in the night, jumped ELP from behind. Will this lead to an alliance with the Alpha, or will Takeshita bring a different partner to Fukuoka?

May 4: World, Global titles! Kyushuu pro, STARDOM hit Dontaku!

0504_8.jpg

A surprise main event will see Hirooki Goto put the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Callum Newman. With a challenge issued at Sakura Genesis, and using a shot at the IWGP Tag titles as collateral, it seemed like Jeff Cobb's adopted home of Fukuoka would see him gunning for Goto and the gold. Yet as Cobb shockingly departed NJPW, Newman declared that he wanted the shot that Cobb had demanded, and the match has been made official.

There is no doubt Newman is the extreme underdog in this title matchup, but a pinfall win over Tetsuya Naito in Ryogoku made him the youngest ever IWGP Tag Team Champion, and the opportunity is on the table to become the youngest IWGP World Heavyweight title holder by some margin. With more than a puncher's chance, could Dontaku be the site of one of NJPW's biggest ever upsets?

0504_7.jpg

Yota Tsuji and Yuya Uemura will battle over the IWGP Global heavyweight Championship in the semi main event on May 4. A long rivalry for Uemura and Tsuji that started at the very beginning of both men's careers has persisted and grown since both returned from excursion, leading to a trilogy of matches for the two in 2024. Uemura struck first with a win in the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Kingdom 18, but Tsuji would take his win back together with Uemura's pride and hair just one month later. That put Uemura on a quest for redemption that was paying off in G1 Climax 34, but although he was victorious against Tsuji in tournament action, he tore his triceps int he process, missing a six month span that saw Tsuji to the Global gold in the meantime. Now they pick up their rivalry with the richest stakes yet.

0504_5.jpg

Day two of Dontaku will also see action from outside NJPW. Kyushuu Pro-Wrestling is a favourite indie staple in the area, and brings with it local favourites like Batten Burabura, Jet Wei, and the Mentai Kid. The highlight of their participation though will see promotion leader Ryota Chikuzen and, for the first time in NJPW for 15 years, TAJIRI, who teams with one time rivals in Toru Yano and Hiroshi Tanahashi to face TMDK.

0504_4.jpg

With El Phantasmo and Boltin Oleg facing Konosuke Takeshita and his new partner, STARDOM bringing their representation as well and more besides, both nights of Dontaku look red hot!

Road to Wrestling Dontaku Day 1 (April 19) Preview

Special start time sees elimination main, Cobb's final bout

The Road to Wrestling Dontaku srtarts on April 19 with a very special event and a special start time. Korakuen will see action at 11:30 AM local time, presenting a rare chance for fans in the US to catch prime time action from Korakuen Hall, live in English on NJPW World!

Watch the Road to Wrestling Dontaku live in English on NJPW World!
Tickets available worldwide in English!

Main event: Elimination Tag Match- Yuya Uemura, Shota Umino, Taichi, YOSHI-HASHI & TAKA Michinoku vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (Yota Tsuji, Shingo Takagi, Tetsuya Naito, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI)
0419_6.jpg

Our main event sees an all star Korakuen Hall favourite in the form of an elimination tag team main event. This ten man tag will serve as the backdrop to a pair of two big time singles matches at Dontaku may 3 and 4 as Shingo Takagi is primed to face Shota Umino and Yuya Uemura gets set to challenge the IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji. In the wake of the New Japan Cup final, Hontai and Just Four Guys are on the same page, and team up officially for the first time here today; one has to wonder how the teams will gel, especially with two young top flight prospects in Umino and Uemura on the same side. How will Umino bounce back from a Chicago title match disappointment, and what who will make a statement in the Global title space?

Meanwhile, as Taichi and Tomohiro Ishii get set to tag as a duo for the first time opposite former IWGP Tag Team Champions Naito and Hiromu, will years of antagonism be the spark to a successful partnership?

5th Match: Ryusuke Taguchi, El Desperado & Hirooki Goto vs United Empire (Callum Newman, Templario & Jakob Austin Young)
0419_5.jpg

Six man action will see a double preview for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight and World Heavyweight Championship matches to come in the ensuing weeks. In a shocking conference this week, it was announced that Jeff Cobb was leaving NJPW, vacating the IWGP Tag Team Championships as a result and granting his planned IWGP World Heavyweight Championship challenge to Callum Newman. For the young Pricne of Pace, an incredible opportunity has landed in his lap, but status as an extreme underdog will see him need to prove himself right from the first day of the Dontaku tour. Meanwhile Templario is set to challenge IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado on April 29 in Saga, and will be eager to make his own mark.

4th Match: War Dogs (Drilla Moloney, Taiji Ishimori & Gedo) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (SANADA, Ren Narita & SHO)
0419_4.jpg

A war between HOUSE OF TORTURE and War Dogs seemed to be headed for a decisive match over the NEVER Openweight 6 Man tag team Championships at Sakura Genesis on April 5. Yet a guitar shot from SANADA saw the Cold Blooded one defect from the Dogs to the House, and split Moloney open in the process. Now, leader David Finlay has declared that 'the price for blood is blood', and a Dogpound Steel Cage match is now set for Dontaku on May 3. Before that though, Moloney has a more immediate bloodlust to sate, and will be gunning for SANADA specifically tonight.

3rd Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi Final Road ~Kinship~ Jeff Cobb vs Hiroshi Tanahashi
Singles record: 2-0 Cobb

0419_3.jpg

After eight years in NJPW, Jeff Cobb wrestles his last match in the cerulean blue on April 19, taking on Hiroshi Tanahashi. The Ace's Final Road will continue to January 4 2026 in the Tokyo Dome, but Cobb's Final Road ends here, and potentially with a final Tour of the Islands on Tanahashi- or will it be Ace's High and a first singles win for Tanahashi over Cobb int heir last bout against one another?

2nd Match: Master Wato, YOH, Boltin Oleg & Toru Yano vs TMDK (Ryohei Oiwa, Hartley Jackson, Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita)
card-1.jpg

With Hizen no Kuni seeing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag team Championship son the line in Saga April 29, an eight man preview sees the artistic alliance of Master Wato and YOH get their hands on champions Kosei Fujita and Robbie Eagles. Meanwhile, after both suffered hard fought losses to Konosuke Takeshita over the NEVER Openweight Championship in recent months, Boltin Oleg and Ryohei Oiwa are on their own quests to redemption and title contention again.

1st Match: Tiger Mask, Yuji Nagata, Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma, Katsuya Murashima & Daiki Nagai
card-1-1.jpg

With Young Lions and veterans mixing it up in the opening match of the card, it's a Road to Dontaku that you don't want to miss the start of on NJPW World!

Another Cage Match the last one nearly had Henare bleed out and Coughlin had to retire so please take care of yourselves fellas. I know it will be hard to do though. Shingo will probably get his win vs Shota which bums me out to no end the direction of Umino right now and I hope Uemura beats Tsuji for the Global Title.

Rocky Romero to side with Konosuke Takeshita at Dontaku!

Takeshita's mystery partner revealed

image-1.png

In the wake of an emotional main event at Windy City Riot this past weekend, El Phantasmo offered his congratulations to Konosuke Takeshita for defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi, but reminded the NEVER Openweight Champion of a hard fought war the two had during the G1 Climax last summer. ELP challenged the Alpha to a match at Resurgence May 9 for the title, a challenge that the Alpha accepted, yet no sooner had the words left both men's lips then Phantasmo was attacked by Rocky Romero.

8Konosuke-Takeshita.mp4.00_02_29_02.静止画010.jpg

One time arch enemies, Romero and Phantasmo had teamed together for the first time ever earlier in the night, and it was clear the two were far from being on the same page. Yet it wasn't until AEW's Collision that this seemed to be more than an issue of frustration with Phantasmo.

03-Don-Callis-Family-vs-Rocky-Ishii-04-17-2025-073.jpg

Romero would team with Tomohiro Ishii on the night to face Takeshita and his tag team partner Josh Alexander, who had recently been recruited to Don Callis' stable of wrestlers. After Ishii and Romero butted heads through the match, Romero dropped off the apron, refusing to tag the newly crowned NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion, and leaving Ishii to the wolves. Then, a returning Beretta, Rocky's former Roppongi Vice partner continued to pile on the damage together with Rocky and a jubilant Callis.

image.png

Now Romero and Takeshita are united under the Callis Family banner, and set to tag at Dontaku. But against ELP and Jado on May 3 and then Phantasmo with Boltin Oleg on May 4, has Rocky bitten off more than he can chew?

Road to Wrestling Dontaku night 6 (April 27) Preview

Yamaguchi sees tour continues

The Road to Dontaku continues on April 27, as Yamaguchi sees action just 24 hours removed from Wrestling Red Zone.
Watch Live on NJPW World! (English to follow on demand)

Main event: El Desperado, YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto vs United Empire (Callum Newman, Templario & Jakob Austin Young)
card-3.jpg

Wrestling Redzone on April 26 will see the vacant IWGP Tag Team Championship position filled, and either Callum Newman will be representing as the youngest ever two time champion champion tonight, or Hirooki Goto will be wearing two titles to the ring in our main event in Yamaguchi. The winner of that Hiroshima main event card will also be enjoying a significant leg up over their opponent May 4 on night two of Dontaku. We are only one week away from the biggest night in Callum Newman's young life, and what could be for Goto the biggest trap game he's ever walked into. What will unfold in this main event preview?

6th Match: Master Wato, Boltin Oleg, YOH, Toru Yano & Hiroshi Tanahashi vs TMDK (Robbie Eagles, Kosei Fujita, Hartley Jackson, Ryohei Oiwa & Zack Sabre Jr.)
card-2-1.jpg

Two days before Master Wato and YOH challenge for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, the last chance for the challengers to make their mark on champions Robbie Eagles and Kosei Fujita in Yamaguchi. Plus, as Hiroshi Tanahashi continues his Final Road against Zack Sabre Jr. May 3 on the first night of Dontaku, we see a preview between the two highly familiar rivals tonight.

5th Match: War Dogs (Gedo & David Finlay) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (Yujiro Takahashi & EVIL)
card-3-1.jpg

Less than one week remains before the war between HOUSE OF TORTURE and BULLET CLUB War Dogs reaches its climax inside the Dogpound Steel Cage. In Yamaguchi, tag team action will see the leaders of the respective warring factions in David Finlay and EVIL pair off with the strategic masterminds of each force in Dick Togo and Gedo. Which side will prove stronger, and which will prove smarter?

4th match: War Dogs (Taiji Ishimori, Gabe Kidd, Drilla Moloney & Clark Connors) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (Yoshinobu Kanemaru, SHO, SANADA & Ren Narita)
card-5.jpg

The remaining members in Dontaku's Dogpound will be in eight man action in Yamaguchi. While sides are even, nobody plays the numbers game better than HOUSE OF TORTURE, and managing the numbers will be a key strategy inside the steel on May 3. Will H.O.T show their superiority tonight, or can War Dogs make might, make right?

3rd Match: TAKA Michinoku, Taichi, Tomohiro Ishii, Shota Umino & Yuya Uemura vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (BUSHI, Shingo Takagi, Hiromu Takahashi, Tetsuya Naito & Yota Tsuji)
card-6.jpg

As speculation continues to run wild as to the futures of Tetsuya Naito and BUSHI, and the entirety of Los Ingobernables De Japon to boot, the group are once again united for now in ten man preview action tonight. More pressing for Shngo Takagi and Yota Tsuji than their team's future is singles action with Shota Umino and Yuya Uemura respectively, with the latter being for Tsuji's IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship. With the bout being in Uemura's Fukuoka backyard, will he set himself up for success tonight?

2nd Match: Jado & El Phantasmo vs United Empire (Francesco Akira & Great-O-Khan)
card-7.jpg

El Phantasmo has two big title challenges ahead of him in a ten day span, starting with Hizen no Kuni Tuesday against Great-O-Khan. After a countout loss robbed him of the NJPW World TV title, he'll be looking to get the clear upper hand ahead of his rematch in Saga.

1st Match: Masatora Yasuda & Ryusuke Taguchi vs Daiki Nagai & Katsuya Murashima
card-8.jpg

Young Lions will be in tag team action to kick things off tonight. Before he faces Hiroshi Tanahashi one on one Tuesday, will Masatora Yasuda be successful under the guiding hips of Taguchi?

Road to Wrestling Dontaku night 7 (April 30) Preview

Last televised event before Fukuoka

The Road to Wrestluing Dontaku continues on to Kumamoto on April 30. With the weekend's huge events of Dontaku may 3 and 4 looming large, it's the last televised chance for key players to make key moves before Fukuoka.
Watch live in English on NJPW World!

Main event: Ryusuke Taguchi, El Phantasmo, YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto vs United Empire (Callum Newman, Great-O-Khan, Francesco Akira & Jakob Austin Young)
card-1-2.jpg

Eight man action in the main event will see the fallout from Hizen no Kuni the prior night, with Great-O-Khan and EL Phantasmo tangling 24 hours removed from their match over the NJPW World TV Championship. Meanwhile, after near nightly battles over the last fortnight, Callum Newman and Hirooki Goto will square off before the NJPW World cameras for the final time before they head to the site of their IWGP World Heavyweight title clash in Fukuoka.

6th Match: TAKA Michinoku, Taichi, Tomohiro Ishii, Shota Umino & Yuya Uemura vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi & Yota Tsuji)
card-9.jpg

Is this the last time in Kuamamoto for Tetsuya Naito and BUSHI? For Los Ingobernables De Japon? Will we have answers by the time Kumamoto rolls around? It's getting increasingly hard to stay tranquilo on the topic of Naito and BUSHI’s departures and what that means for the broader landscape in NJPW. Answers will surely be felt by the time of the tour closing weekend in Fukuoka, but we should have hints tonight, as well as further drama between Dontaku singles opponents.

5th Match: War Dogs (Gedo, Gabe Kidd & David Finlay) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL, Ren Narita & Dick Togo)
card-10.jpg

In a matter of days, HOUSE OF TORTURE and War Dogs will be locked in the Dogpound steel cage with no escape. As six man action sees a pair of previews tonight, who will have the last upper hand on NJPW World before Dontaku?

4th Match: War Dogs (Taiji Ishimori, Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (SANADA, SHO & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)
card-11.jpg

The six man previews continue with this battle. It was the guitar shot from SANADA to Drilla Moloney that was the straw that broke the camel's back and necessitated this brutal match to be made. Tonight, Moloney looks to strike back alongside his former championship partner Clark Connors, and Taiji Ishimori.

3rd Match: Toru Yano & Hiroshi Tanahashi vs TMDK (Ryohei Oiwa & Zack Sabre Jr.)
card-12.jpg

With Hiroshi Tanahashi and Zack Sabre Jr. set to collide on night one of Dontaku Saturday, a last preview tonight. One has to wonder meanwhile whether Ryohei Oiwa is in line for a match on the Final Road for Tanahashi?

2nd Match: Master Wato, YOH & Boltin Oleg vs TMDK (Kosei Fujita, Robbie Eagles & Hartley Jackson)
card-13.jpg

24 hours after the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships are defended in Saga Tuesday, both Master Wato and YOH, and the Ichiban Sweet Boys will do battle in six man action tonight. Meanwhile, Boltin Oleg and Hartley Jackson will be bringing the size and power to this trios bout.

1st match: Katsuya Murashima vs Daiki Nagai
Singles record: 4-0 Murashima at time of writing

card-14.jpg

Singles action starts us off as the Young Lions do battle. After more defeats for Nagai at the hands of Murashima on this tour, will he be able to turn things around tonight in Kumamoto?

Wrestling Dontaku 2025 Day 1 (May 3) Preview

War Dogs and HOT clash in the Dogpound Cage
Wrestling Dontaku returns for two consecutive nights at the Fukuoka Convention Center. Day 1 is kicking off on May 3 with a Dogpound Cage match in the main event, a showdown between Shingo Takagi and Shota Umino and the continuation of Tanahashi’s final road.
Watch live in English on NJPW World!

7th Match Dogpound Cage Match: War Dogs (Taiji Ishimori, Clark Connors, Drilla Moloney, Gabe Kidd & David Finlay) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (Yoshinobu Kanemaru, SHO, SANADA, Ren Narita & EVIL)
Adobe-Express-file-1.jpg

Faction warfare between HOUSE OF TORTURE and the War Dogs erupted at New Beginning, when EVIL made a shocking return—attacking War Dogs members and 'expelling' them from BULLET CLUB. Through the New Japan Cup tour, violent battles erupted, most ending in disqualifications and countouts, until Sakura Genesis in theory would see a definitive winner in a match over the NEVER Openweight 6 man tag team Championships.

Instead, tensions only escalated. SANADA, never feeling like a true fit within the War Dogs, turned on Drilla Moloney with a sickening chairshot, splitting the head of SANADA open, and causing David Finlay to declare that the price for blood is blood, inside the unforgiving Dogpound steel cage. There has only been one such match in history, and with god reason; the last time the War Dogs themselves faced United Empire in just such a match, one participant was forced into retirement in Alex Coughlin, Will Ospreay has not been seen in NJWP since, and HENARE sustained a life threatening head wound.

One of these two sides, and none of these ten men will ever be the same. 12 years on from BULLET CLUB being created at Wrestling Dontaku, this bloody birthday will see its sub factions changed forever.

6th Match: Shota Umino vs Shingo Takagi
Singles record: 2-1 Umino

Adobe-Express-file1-3.jpg

Shota Umino’s 'second chapter' has been a rollercoaster ride. Despite impressive performances, the Roughneck has continued to blow hot and cold when it comes to results in pivotal matches. After losing the New Japan Cup final in a hard-fought battle, and suffering a heavy defeat against Hirooki Goto at Windy City Riot for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title, Umino seeks to regain momentum once again.

As he looks to reestablish himself among New Japan’s top, Umino targets a familiar foe in Shingo Takagi. Umino has beaten the Dragon twice in singles competition over the last 365 days, and on paper, it may seem like a favorable matchup for the Roughneck. Overconfidence can be dangerous though, especially when looking to slay a dragon. Fueled by personal animosity and recent provocations from Shota, Takagi is out for revenge, and an enraged Dragon is not to be underestimated.

5th Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi Final Road Kinship: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Zack Sabre Jr.
Singles Record: 7-6 Tanahashi

Adobe-Express-file2-2.jpg

As Hiroshi Tanahashi's final Tokyo Dome match draws near, Zack Sabre Jr. stands in his path next. Strong representatives of the classic styles of their respective homelanmds, a lot of parallels can be drawn between Tanahashi and Sabre and what they meant in reviving Japanese and UK scenes that were under threat of extinction. When they finally crossed paths in NJPW, the result was a feud that has spanned 13 singles matches.

New Japan Cups, G1s, the British Championship and NJPW World TV gold have all been contested between the Frontman and the Ace, with the rivalry between the two seeing this one of a select few matches to be featured in both the Tokyo Dome and Madison Square Garden. With Tanahashi holding a narrow edge in their 13 prior encounters, this match could be ZSJ’s chance to even the score; or perhaps a chance for the Ace to claim ultimate superiority.

4th Match – Tag Team Match: Jado & El Phantasmo vs Don Callis Family (Rocky Romero & Konosuke Takeshita)
Adobe-Express-file3-1.jpg

Windy City Riot in Chicago saw the unlikely first time teaming of El Phantasmo and Rocky Romero, brought together as CHAOS dissolved into Hontai recently. Communication was far from perfect in a match that saw victory for Titan and Tetsuya Naito, and it was bad temper on the part of Romero that seemed to be the root of a backstage attack on ELP mere seconmds after he'd issued a challenge to NEVER Openweight Champion Takeshita.

Days later though, and Romero betrayed a more long term partner in Tomohiro Ishii, reuniting with former RPG Vice partner Beretta and aligning himself with the Don Callis Family. Tonight we see the first official step of that partnership in Japan. Is this the start of a larger scale invasion from Callis and his stable?

3rd Match: Ryusuke Taguchi, YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto vs United Empire (Jakob Austin Young, Great-O-Khan & Callum Newman)
Adobe-Express-file4-2.jpg

This six-man bout previews tomorrow’s main event, where Hirooki Goto defends the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against Callum Newman. Joining Goto are the other half of Bishamon, YOSHI-HASHI and the unpredictable tactician Ryusuke Taguchi. The United Empire, meanwhile, fields a formidable trio to counter Hontai's offense. Newman's brand new IWGP Tag Team Champion partner Great-O-Khan is alongside him

2nd Match: TAKA Michinoku, Taichi, Tomohiro Ishii & Yuya Uemura vs Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Tetsuya Naito & Yota Tsuji)
Adobe-Express-file5.jpg

The second match of the night mark apparently the penultimate appearance of Los Ingobernables de Japon in its current form, with Naito and BUSHI set to compete in their farewell bout the following night. It's also a key preview of the semi-main event of Night 2, where Yuya Uemura challenges Yota Tsuji for the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship. A win here could shift the psychological edge heading into that title match. Meanwhile, as Taichi and Tomohiro Ishii recently claimed number one contendership to the IWGP Tag team titles, they'll be looking to show their worth with an eye on what Great-O-Khan and Callum Newman do next this weekend.

1st Match: Master Wato, YOH, Boltin Oleg & Toru Yano vs TMDK (Kosei Fujita, Robbie Eagles, Hartley Jackson & Ryohei Oiwa)
Adobe-Express-file6.jpg

The main card begins with a clash that comes just four days after Wrestling Hizen no Kuni, where the Jr. Tag Team Titles were decided between the Ichiban Sweet Boys and YOH & Master Wato. That outcome will heavily influence this Jr./Heavyweight mixed tag bout, featuring talent from Hontai and TMDK.

Kickoff Match: Katsuya Murashima vs Daiki Nagai
Singles Record 5-0 Katsuya Murashima

Adobe-Express-file7.jpg

As Katsuya Murashima and Daiki Nagai kick us off, will the fiery Nagai finally get his first win over Murashima, or will the senior of the two Young Lions extend his lead from the 5-0 at time of writing?

Wrestling Dontaku 2025 - Day 2 (May 4) Preview

Two title matches and a farewell for Tetsuya Naito and BUSHI set the tone for day 2

For the second consecutive night, the Fukuoka Convention Center plays host to Wrestling Dontaku on May 4, featuring two championship matches, special appearances by Kyushu Pro and STARDOM wrestlers, and the emotional final match under the NJPW banner for BUSHI and Tetsuya Naito.
Watch live in English on NJPW World!

Main event: IWGP World Heavyweight Championship-Hirooki Goto vs Callum Newman

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Callum Newman. After returning from a knee injury, he quickly made waves by becoming the youngest IWGP Tag Team Champion in history. However, his momentum hit an unexpected roadblock when his tag partner, Jeff Cobb, announced his departure from New Japan, forcing the duo to vacate their titles. Yet, in the world of professional wrestling, when one door closes, another opens. Inspired by Cobb's self initiative in challenging Hirooki Goto backstage at Sakura Genesis, Newman took his former partners show, and found himself with an even greater opportunity: a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

Standing in his way is Hirooki Goto, the resilient and battle-hardened champion. 2025 has become known as the Goto Revolution, with the veteran leading the charge for Hontai, defending his title against both familiar foes and rising stars alike. His reign has been defined by perseverance, pride, and unwavering determination, and though he has accepted this fight just as he has all others during his reign, Goto has looked over the his young foe. Decrying a relatively weak singles record, Goto has demanded that Callum prove himself to both him and the fans during the Road to Dontaku.

That happened at Wrestling Redzone, when Newman and Great-O-Khan defeated Goto and YOSHI-HASHI to win the vacant IWGP Tag Team titles. Newman has become the youngest ever IWGP Tag team Champion not once but twice, and now has much more than a puncher's chance of being the youngest ever holder of professional wrestling's greatest prize. Could Newman defeat the likes of Kazuchika Okada and Shinsuke Nakamura to the history books, or will the Revolution continue?

7th Match: IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship- Yota Tsuji vs Yuya Uemura
Singles record: 16-12-22 Tsuji

Adobe-Express-file7-1.jpg

A rivalry seven years in the making co0ntinues at Dontaku with the stakes highest they've ever been as Yota Tsuji and Yuya Uemura battle over the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship.
Debuting opposite one another, Tsuji and Uemura went to 21 straight time limit draws through 2018 and 2019 before each got their first ever wsingles wins- over the other. From there, the wins went back and forth as their Young Lion feud saw many call theirs the most promising generation of Young Lions in recent memory. That development was protracted by the COVID pandemic, but after they finally graduated from the dojo system, each took a different path in pursuit of greatness.

Tsuji honed his craft overseas in England and Mexico, eventually aligning himself with Los Ingobernables de Japon. Since then, he’s collected accolades including the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship, the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship, and a monumental victory in the 2024 New Japan Cup. Uemura returned from his excursion in the United States, joining the ranks of Just 5 (now 4) Guys, and steadily climbed the ranks to earn this golden opportunity. Still the two collided; first in Uemura's first singles match back from excursion that saw him victorious in the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Kingdom 18. In return, Tsuji would beat Uemura and take his hair in 2024's New Beginning event, before a fateful third encounter that year during the G1.

A heated matchup was approaching its conclusion when, perhaps with similarities painted between this feud and the old rivalries between the likes of Shinsuke Nakamura and Hiroshi Tanahashi in the back of his mind, Uemura went up for an Ace like High Fly Flow. Uemura hit the knees of Tsuji, and tore his tricep on the landing; the Heat Storm won the match, but was on the shelf for six monthe thereafter.

Now, this battle between the sun and the moon, this match is about a growing legacy, identity, and pride. Both men are determined to outshine the other, but only one will leave Fukuoka with the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship in hand.

6th Match: TAKA Michinoku, Taichi, Tomohiro Ishii & Shota Umino vs Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Tetsuya Naito & Shingo Takagi)
Adobe-Express-file6-1.jpg

After 19 years in NJPW for El Ingobernable, and 12 for BUSHI, day two of Wrestling Dontaku will see the final matches for both in the cerulean blue- at least under the banner of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. With uncertainty looming over their futures, similar uncertainty exists over Los Ingobernables De Japon, with this the final match for the group in its current form. All the way through the Road to Wrestling Dontaku, Naito has rebuffed questions about the future with a sly 'tranquilo' but at the end of this emotional bout, a hint of the future is sure to be shown.

5th Match: TAJIRI, Chikuzen Ryota, YOH, Toru Yano & Hiroshi Tanahashi vs TMDK (Hartley Jackson, Kosei Fujita, Robbie Eagles, Ryohei Oiwa & Zack Sabre Jr.)
Adobe-Express-file5-1.jpg

With Kyushu Pro joining forces with Hontai, all eyes will be on Tanahashi, Yano, and TAJIRI—three men with a storied history spanning over 16 years. Now allies once again, TAJIRI teams up with Fukuoka native Chikuzen Ryota and junior heavyweight YOH to take on the fearsome blend of technical skill, power, striking and speed that is TMDK in this explosive 10-man tag team match.

4th Match: Boltin Oleg & El Phantasmo vs Don Callis Family (Rocky Romero & Konosuke Takeshita)
Adobe-Express-file4-3.jpg

After facing Jado the previous day, Rocky Romero and Konosuke Takeshita return to the ring to face a completely different kind of challenge. While Rocky Romero might possess one of the brightest minds in professional wrestling, and has married himself to the premiere collector of talent in the game overseas in Don Callis, he doesn't possess the heavy artillery in the form of Kazakh powerhouse Boltin Oleg that El Phantasmo brings tonight. Will Romero have a dose of buyers' remorse tonight?

3rd Match: STARDOM Showcase
Adobe-Express-file3-2.jpg

A special STARDOM Showcase match will take place at Wrestling Dontaku, featuring yet-to-be-announced participants. Expect high-level action from some of the best talent in women's wrestling!

2nd Match: Master Wato & YOSHI-HASHI vs United Empire (Jakob Austin Young & Great-O-Khan)
Adobe-Express-file2-3.jpg

Tag team action in the second match of the night could set the psychological tone heading into the main event showdown. Representing Hontai, Hirooki Goto's longtime tag team partner YOSHI-HASHI and Master Wato will take on United Empire’s Jakob Austin Young and Great-O-Khan, Callum Newman's most recent partner. In Hiroshima at Wrestling Redzone, it was YOSHI-HASHI on the losing end of a main event battle that saw Newman and O-Khan become the IWGP tag team Champions. Will that advantage be pressed, and will omens be established ahead of the main event?

1st Match: Batten Burabura & Mentai☆Kid vs Gedo & Taiji Ishimori
Adobe-Express-file1-4.jpg

The War Dogs' Gedo and Taiji Ishimori, square off against Kyushu Pro’s Batten Burabura and Mentai☆Kid in an inter-promotional, NJPW vs Kyushu Pro tag team encounter to start the main card today. Long term veterans Burabura and Kid certainly know their way around the squared circle, and have mroe than a puncher's chance against the War Dogs side, with Ishimori part of the Dogpound cage the night before, and Gedo sure to be involved in that matchup in one form or another. As local hero Mentai☆Kid, named after the Fukuoka spicy cod roe delicacy of mentaiko, prepares for his retirement on May 11, could he scoop a big win in the cerulean blue?

Kick off Match: Katsuya Murashima & Ryusuke Taguchi vs Jet Wei & Hitamaru Sasaki
Adobe-Express-file-2.jpg

Wrestling Dontaku Day 2 opens with a special tag team match featuring Katsuya Murashima and Ryusuke Taguchi against Kyushu Pro’s Jet Wei and Hitamaru Sasaki. It'll be the biggest crowds for Wei and Sasaki to perform before in their careers, and significance is deepr for Wei in this affair. Last year's Dontaku saw him wrestle in a losing effort against Murashima and Togi Makabe in the Dontaku kickoff; tonight he looks to get a win over the Young Lion.

Umino pinning Naito is the finish that makes sense for that but will cause so much discourse

You underestimate certain corners of the Internet. Shota Umino sucks as a top guy sure but some people are mad at him for existing. It's like EVIL times ten

Yeah I got those vibes a ton earlier on the year but thought they had died down, probs just avoiding better.

Really were annoying to me too bc I think Shota is still really good and this is almost all booking. I can't say he doesn't have any fault in it, someone better may have been able to adapt, but they've fucked him
