Big matches set for Dontaku May 3!

Three titles already official, Young Lions face Hat-Trick Challenge

May 3 will see Wrestling Dontaku return to its home of the Fukuoka International Center. Always one of the biggest events leading into the early summer, Dontaku presents a wrestling counterpart to Fukuoka’s Dontaku festival, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Before even a match was announced, the building was fast approaching a sellout, and with big titles on the line, that goal seems a certainty!
Watch Wrestling Dontaku May 3 LIVE in English on NJPW World!

050309.jpg

Topping the Dontaku card is the first defence of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, SANADA taking on his one time Los Ingobernables De Japon teammate and the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion at time of writing, Hiromu Takahashi. Moments after SANADA converted his New Japan Cup win into world title success in the main event of Sakura Genesis opposite Kazuchika Okada, Hiromu would hit the ring and challenge the new title holder. SANADA accepted on the condition that Hiromu defend his junior heavyweight title against Yoshinobu Kanemaru and the match was on.

Will SANADA get over the tough first defence barrier? Or could Hiromu live his dream of being the first reigning junior champion to capture world heavyweight gold?

050308.jpg

On the tenth anniversary of BULLET CLUB, David Finlay will be looking for NEVER Openweight Championship gold at the expense of Tama Tonga. At Sakura Genesis, a shot with the title ot the head of the champion cemented the Rebel’s challenge, and Finlay would go on to underscore those actions by forcibly expelling El Phantasmo from BULLET CLUB. With Finlay looking to reinforce his status at the head of the group, especially as former leader Jay White competes in AEW Dynamite supposedly under the BC banner, gold equals power, and results are all important, over core four founder member especially.

050307.jpg

NEVER Openweight 6 Man gold will also be on the line at Dontaku as Strong Style seek their second defence. After putting HOUSE OF TORTURE in their rear view mirror, it was Ren Narita that voiced a desire to face Kazuchika Okada with the NEVER 6 man belts at stake. A tag match for Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi against Narita and Shota Umino during the New Japan Cup saw a convincing victory for the Dream Team, but now the prospect is a match in Narita’s wheelhouse; the only question remains who Okada might enlist as his tag partners.

050306.jpg

Zack Sabre Jr. will go one on one at Dontaku with Jeff Cobb. Backstage at Sakura Genesis, Sabre made a challenge to newly crowned IWGP Tag Team Champions Aussie Open on behalf of his TMDK mates Shane Haste and Mikey Nicholls, but was cut off at the pass by Jeff Cobb, who wanted a shot at ZSJ’s NJPW World TV Championship. Sabre was in no position to accept, with a defence coming up on April 15 against Tom Lawlor in DC. Yet should the Briton get past the Filthy one, it seems likely that Cobb will be banging on the champ’s door.

050305.jpg

KENTA will face Hikuleo one on one. When David Finlay clobbered Tama Tonga at Sakura Genesis, KENTA joined the party with a STRONG Openweight belt shot to Hikuleo, delivered moments before he stabbed his friend El Phantasmo in the back to boot him from BULLET CLUB. Now Hikuleo will want revenge, and it seems very possible that should KENTA get past Eddie Edwards at Capital Collision, the STRONG title as well.

050300.jpg

A unique kickoff bout for Dontaku will see the first ever Young Lion Hat-Trick challenge match. One of four Young Lions- Ryohei Oiwa, Yuto Nakashima, Oskar Leube or Boltin Oleg, to be announced at a later date, will compete in three five minute matchups. Should they be able to run the gauntlet and win all three, they will be granted a future shot at the NJPW World TV Championship, as well as 200,000 Yen of Yakkiniku barbecue courtesy of CS Asahi- rich and delicious prizes indeed.

With plenty more action, and the announcement of Best of the Super Jr. cards as well, a loaded night on deck for Dontaku May 3!

Hiroshima sees two championships, special singles bout, BOSJ 4/27

Major card on Road to Dontaku

Thursday, April 27 will see the Road to Dontaku run through Hiroshima and the stunning Sun Plaza Hall. It’ll be a big night for junior heavyweight action, as two junior titles will be decided, an openweight challenge sees the biggest match of DOUKI’s career to date, and the Best of the Super Jr. lineup will be revealed.
Watch Road to Dontaku LIVE on NJPW World! (English to follow on demand)
042709.jpg

The main event in Hiroshima will see the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at stake, Hiromu Takahashi facing the challenge of Yoshinobu Kanemaru. After SANADA captured the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of Sakura Genesis, he was confronted by Hiromu, who wanted a shot at his dream of capturing the World Heavyweight title while still holding junior heavyweight gold.
Hiromu’s former LIJ partner agreed to the challenge, on one condition- that Hiromu face Yoshinobu Kanemaru for said junior gold first. During Best of the Super Jr. last year, Kanemaru launched a brutal assault on Hiromu’s knees that resulted in a shock tapout victory for the Heel Master, and one of few defeats in an ultimately successful BOSJ campaign for the current defending champion.
Now, with his knee run ragged by Robbie Eagles in a largely one sided bout in Ryogoku that Takahashi barely survived, he faces Kanemaru for the fourth time, and Kanemaru could walk out for the first time with IWGP Junior Heavyweight singles gold.
042708.jpg

Also on the line in Hiroshima are the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, champions Catch 2/2 taking on the team of Kevin Knight and KUSHIDA. After a challenge was issued during the Road to Sakura Genesis, TJP and Francesco Akira were less than welcoming in their rebuttal, but after consideration have accepted the shot. KUSHIDA and Knight have been nothing short of impressive in the United States especially as of late, but can they stop one of the most convincing reigns in recent history for the junior tag champions?
042707.jpg

A special singles match will see DOUKI go one on one with Tetsuya Naito. During tag team action at Sakura Genesis, a win for three of Just Five Guys over LIJ saw stereo sound submissions, and though it was Kanemaru winning the match via Figure Four, the most dramatic hold was the Italian Stretch (or DOUKI Chokey for the informal crowd) on Tetsuya Naito. DOUKI kept the hold in long after the bell, and continued to trash talk El Ingobernable in Spanish after being pried off. With dramatic improvement over the last few years, DOUKI has become one of the most prominent junior heavyweights on the roster, and is certainly a figure to look out for in Best of the Super Jr this year. If he beats Tetsuya Naito, could his ceiling be even higher?
sj-1.jpg

Speaking of prominent junior heavyweights, the Best of the Super Jr. lineup will be officially announced during the event on April 27. Who will make the cut for the landmark 30th running of the junior tournament?

KENTA and Hikuleo, Cobb and ZSJ set for title encounters in Fukuoka

Two more title matches official for Dontaku

As Dontaku in the Fukuoka International Center May 3 gets ever closer to sellout status, two more championship matches have been added to the slate for what is sure to be a stunning event.
Watch Wrestling Dontaku live in English on NJPW World!
1.jpg

Backstage at Sakura Genesis April 8, Jeff Cobb responded to Zack Sabre Jr.’s proxy challenge on behalf of Shane Haste and Mikey Nicholls to Aussie Open with a challenge of his own. Cobb wanted a shot at the NJPW World TV Championship, a challenge Sabre accepted as long as he got past Tom Lawlor at Capital Collision. Though it was by no means a guarantee for Sabre, who just survived a very game Filthy One, it was a win for the Briton, who will now defend his championship for a sixth time in under four months at Dontaku opposite Cobb.

2.jpg

Also set for Dontaku was a singles contest between Hikuleo and KENTA, made after KENTA rocked the big man with a STRONG Openweight Championship shot. A belt shot now leds to a shot for the belt, as after KENTA retained against Eddie Edwards this past weekend at Capital Collision, Hikuleo demanded that the grudge match become a championship affair. Who emerges with the gold in the first ever STRONG Championship match on Japanese soil?

Okada recruits Tomohiro Ishii for Dontaku title match

Two thirds of NEVER challenges decided

card-14-1.jpg

After Strong Style retained their NEVER Openweight 6 Man Tag team Championships recently on the Road to Sakura Genesis, Ren Narita called out Kazuchika Okada to challenge with his choice of partners at Dontaku. The challenge was accepted, and after Tomohiro Ishii made an appeal at a recent non televised live event, one of the Rainmaker’s partners is official! Okada and Ishii will do battle at Dontaku, but who will join them?
