Super Junior Tag League night 5 (October 30) Preview

A Block in action in Niigata

1*D-6v66LWwmExbw99EPxi4g.png

With teams already past the halfway point, A Block hits Niigata in Super Junior Tag League action Wednesday night. Who can take control of the six team block and who will fall by the wayside in these penultimate matchups?

Watch live in English on NJPW World!

Main event: Skateboard Bros. (Dragon Dia & Ryusuke Taguchi) (1–2) vs War Dogs (Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney) (3–0)

1*MSahz5OpebiMCTMx04sCvQ.jpeg

Taguchi & Dia must win
It’s incredible to think that not two calendar years ago, Clark Connors and Ryusuke Taguchi were partners in Super Jr. Tag League given the path that the Wild Rhino took to becoming 100 Proof. While Taguchi has brought his consistent fun loving energy into the Skateboard Bros with Dragon Dia, and garnered some success with a win over Hiromu Takahashi and BUSHI, he now contends with his past. Connors and Drilla Moloney have brought a lot of hate fueled energy into this tag league with a perfect record, and now seek to push the ‘Bro’s off their boards and out of league contention.

7th Match: Los Ingobernables de Japon (Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI) (1–2) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (SHO & Yoahinobu Kanemaru) (2–1)

1*FvsxIiTRdgjF4uVaZ21jkQ.jpeg

Takahashi & BUSHI must win
After a loss in Monday’s main event to Ichiban Sweet Boys, it’s a must win scenarion for the LIj team of Hiromu and BUSHI. Meanwhile a HOUSE OF TORTURE victory Monday has put them a win off the pace, and albeit with a potential tie break lopss to Connors and Moloney, the potential to top the block still remains as Halloween fast approaches.

6th Match: Capitan Suicida & Tiger Mask (0–3) vs Ichiban Sweet Boys (Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita) (2–1)

1*PgFUMGivz7yhOPuHeko3gg.jpeg

Tiger Mask & Suicida are mathematically eliminated
The winless side of Capitan Suicida and Tiger Mask found themselves eliminated after action on Monday in Korakuen Hall. Now they take on Ichiban Sweet Boys, riding high from a pair of main event victories thus far in the tournament. Former IWGP Jr. Tag Champion partners Tiger mask and Robbie Eagles’ interactions should definitely be something to see in the first of three heated league encounters tonight.

5th Match: Jado, Master Wato & Shota Umino vs Just Five Guys (Taichi, SANADA & DOUKI)

1*tDbtad5pzyH4tpOYCYVFbg.jpeg

Taichi returns to the ring in our fifth match of the night, as he gets set to face David Finlay at Power Struggle for the IWGP Global heavyweight Championship. One week before his title encounter, the Holy Emperor will be looking to deliver a message, as will SANADA and Shota Umino and Master Wato and DOUKI before they face off in Osaka.

4th Match: United Empire (Jakob Austin Young, Francesco Akira & TJP) vs BULLET CLUB (Gedo, Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X)

1*ObZIt6vKX1te-yE6mEnM2w.jpeg

Six man action will see United Empire and BULLET CLUB collide. During Best of the Super Jr, TJP was within a hair of making the finals for the very first time, only to be stopped at the semifinal hurdle by Ishimori. Will tag success provide just desserts for singles defeat? We might get a hint tonight.

3rd Match: Tomoaki Honma, Ninja Mack & The DKC vs CHAOS (Toru Yano, Rocky Romero & YOH)

1*t8BXsPP3KldZgCztuYcS7Q.jpeg

Ninja Mack and the DKC have put past issues behind them to get going in Super Jr. Tag League. Not a second too soon, as they have to deal with Rocky Romero and YOH Thursday after their strong showing thus far. As Toru Yano rejoins the action, what will happen in this preview?

2nd Match: Shoma Kato, Kevin Knight & KUSHIDA vs Katsuya Murashima, Paris De Silva & Jude London

1*ko7vxZDs19ssNnhYVfP2FQ.jpeg

The Velocities might not have exploded out of the blocks in their debut Super Jr. Tag League like they may have hoped, but they have a huge opportunity in front of them Thursday as their campaigns continue. A strong showing over the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champions will be huge for London and De Silva, and there’s the chance for an impressive prelude tonight.

1st match: Masatora Yasuda vs Daiki Nagai

Singles record: 0–0–16
1*7b7h0HYQC8nDqkoWd0HahQ.jpeg

It’s singles match number 17 for Masatora Yasuda and Daiki Nagai in our opener. While neither one of our Young Lions has gained an upper hand in singles competition yet, it’s clear Nagai has the bigger attitude and a lot of fire in his post match comments. Will thge price for a big head be a big beating?

Super Junior Tag League night 6 (October 31) Preview

Halloween night sees penultimate B Block action

1*4ucO6eGcbVwz5NYFCJbWaA.png

Big fights and big frights are in line this Halloween night, as Super Jr. Tag League approaches its climax. What teams will still be in the hunt as we head toward Power Struggle in Osaka?

LIVE in English on NJPW World!

Main event: Catch 2/2 (Francesco Akira & TJP) (1–2) vs BULLET CLUB (Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X) (2–1)

1*RmFQLGGpV79LNjsY2nhGVA.jpeg

Catch 2/2 must win

Our main event tonight pits Catch 2/2 in a must win situation opposite the BULLET CLUB tandem of Taiji Ishimori and Robbie X. The 2023 junior tag league winners have found themselves on the back foot after two straight losses and cannot afford to be defeated again.

Win or go home was exactly the situation TJP found himself in when the Best of the Super Jr. semifinals took place earlier in June. Then the Public Enemy was defeated by Taiji Ishimori; will history repeat tonight, or will Catch 2/2 stay in the hunt?

7th Match: Intergalactic Jet Setters (Kevin Knight & KUSHIDA (2–1) vs The Velocities (Jude London & Paris De Silva) (1–2)

1*TlSt7UH_bUGckREx0lZYYQ.jpeg

The Velocities must win

After a pair of losses started thweir campaigns, Paris De Silva and Jude London finally found some momentum with a Korakuen win Monday and will look to turn that into a rapid ascent for the Velocities. Tonight, they’re in a must win scenario, and against the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions. There’s no doubt they’ll be the underdogs in this scenario, but could they pull off a huge upset to stay in the hunt?

6th Match: Roppongi ReVice (YOH&Rocky Romero)(2–1) vs Ninja Mack & The DKC (1–2)

1*a48Cc8768xWamRF60E0-cw.jpeg

Ninja Mack & DKC must win

After getting onto the same page for their first win Sunday in Korakuen, the team of DKC and Ninja Mack suffered a setback the following night in ther form of the Intergalactic Jet Setters. Tonight, they try to get back on the winning horse, and will need to do so to stay within mathematical contention. Can these martial arts masters put away experienced tag team experts?

5th Match: Jado, Master Wato & Shota Umino vs Just Five Guys (DOUKI, Taichi & SANADA)

1*WzfLJNeGPH4VSFOeQ0ADnQ.jpeg

With Power Struggle just four days away, another double tag team preview will see Hontai and Just Five Guys collide. With Taichi also getting set for his IWGP Global Championship challenge on November 4, what will happen in this trios contest?

4th Match: Los Ingobernables De Japon (Hiromu Takahashi, BUSHI & Tetsuya Naito) vs BULLET CLUB War Dogs (Drilla Moloney, Clark Connors & Gedo)

1*e1bHUeA6v17XAe6SmaPIUA.jpeg

Trios action will see a key preview of Saturday in Nagoya, where we will find out who advances out of A Block and into the Super Jr. Tag League final. BUSHI and Hiromu failed to wrest the IWGP Jr. Tag titles from Connors and Moloney earlier in the spring, but will they be able to take away critical points Saturday?

3rd Match: TMDK (Ryohei Oiwa, Kosei Fujita & Robbie Eagles) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (Yoshinobu Kanemaru, SHO & Yujiro Takahashi)

1*OXYZ9JOdn07UNU74l707tA.jpeg

With Nagoya set to see Ichiban Sweet Boys looking to make the Tag League finals, and banish a Halloween horrifying prospect of HOUSE OF TORTURE in the same position, six man action tonight. Will it be a H.O.T trick or TMDK treat?

2nd Match: Toru Yano, Capitan Suicida & Tiger Mask vs Ryusuke Taguchi, Dragon Dia & Tomoaki Honma

1*kpkPaqmIoSpFBHA9nDilJA.jpeg

Tiger Mask and Capitan Suicida are out of the SJTL hunt, but will be fighting for pride in their last league encounter Saturday. Tonight will be a chance to set the pace as both Tigre Suicida and the Skateboard Bros plan to end things strong.

1st match: Masatora Yasuda & Shoma Kato vs Daiki Nagai & Katsuya Murashima

1*iJMuCNP8GDujA5TKMF7RPg.jpeg

Action kicks off in Toyama with a Young Lion tag affair. As competition between the young prospects continues to heat up, who will impose their superiority over the rest tonight?

Lmao the house of torture bit today was hilarious. They handcuffed Bushi on the second level so you could just see him struggling in the background while Hiromu fought on his own until a young lion finally came running in bc he found the key

Super Jr. Tag League night 7 (November 1) Preview

Last night of A Block action

0*bFzuT49WA0SfunO4.png

November 1 will see the final night for A Block in Super Jr. Tag League. Three teams are still alive in the block, with two matches critical to determining who will advance to the finals at Power Struggle Monday.

Watch live in English on NJPW World!

Main event: Los Ingobernables De Japon (1–3) vs BULLET CLUB War Dogs (3–1)

Direct tag record: 1–0 War Dogs
1*HRZP-xPLBTAWaDua-tM0cw.jpeg

Connors & Moloney advance with a win
Hiromu and BUSHI are mathematically eliminated

Our main event tonight sees Clark Connors and Drilla Moloney in control of their own destinies, where a win is guaranteed to advance them. That’s thanks to a dominant start to the league that saw victopries over both Ichiban Sweet Boys and HOUSE OF TORTURE, their tiebreaks ensuring that even if scored are even, the former IWGP champions will advance.

They’ll also be buoyed by a prior title defence against Hiromu and BUSHI earlier this spring, but with their LIJ opposition this time playing for pride, they have to be wary of a spoiler. With Dragon Dia and Ryusuke Taguchi proving that even the Dogs can have their (off) day, will they roar back to the EDION finals, or get upset?

7th Match: Ichiban Sweet Boys (Kosei Fujita & Robbie Eagles) (3–1) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (Yoshinobu Kanemaru & SHO) (3–1)

Direct tag record: 1–0 Ichiban Sweet Boys
1*_ViWq7BbPdLPQBml99_bDA.jpeg

Both teams advance with a win and a War Dogs loss or draw

After everything but the kitchen sink of dirty tricks was sused by Yoshinobu Kanemaru and SHO in Niigata on Wednesday, the threat of HOUSE OF TORTURE in their second straight Super Jr. Tag League finals is still very real. Robbie Eagles and Kosei Fujita will need to repeat their 2023 victory over H.O.T to survive tonight. Both teams need a little help as well from LIJ in the main event, but for now will control what they can, with a win (likely by any means necessary for the HOUSE) in the semi main.

6th Match: Skateboard Bros. (Ryusuke Taguchi & Dragon Dia) (2–2) vs Tiger Mask & Capitan Suicida (0–4)

1*4Ne8IdNQu4TCaQ1FsmzNIQ.jpeg

Both teams are mathematically eliminated

It has been a difficult teething period for the new team of Capitan Suicida and Tiger Mask during this Super Jr. Tag League, the Tigre Suicida duo not amassing any points during their campaign. With pride to play for, they’ll definitely want to at least end their run with a win tonight, opposite the Skateboard Bros. combo of Ryusuke Taguchi and Dragon Dia. Dia and Taguchi have been impressive in their two winning efforts, and the possibility to end their campaignsd with a positive win loss record is certainly there. Who will get the W?

5th Match: Shota Umino, Jado & Master Wato vs Just Five Guys (SANADA, Taichi & DOUKI)

1*RTehlbVFgKnekdlyVfyn1A.jpeg

Just days away from big singles meetings at Power Struggle, Just Five Guys have turned up the pressure in recent nights. It was Wednesday in Niigata that saw SANADA leave Shota Umino laying with a Skull End out on the floor, offering up no comments to the media but a steely determination ahead of Power Struggle. Meanwhile, DOUKI and Master Wato will bring the heat before their IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship match Monday as Taichi will continue to deliver a message to IWGP Global Champion David Finlay.

4th Match: Kevin Knight, KUSHIDA & Tomoaki Honma vs CHAOS (YOH, Rocky Romero & Toru Yano)

1*KmfvBJiGYa3G5gK95A3I4g.jpeg

Ahead of what could be a block deciding bout, it’s Hontai versus CHAOS tonight. Will it be Intergalactic Jet Setters, or Roppongi Revice with the upper hand?

3rd Match: Ninja Mack, The DKC & Shoma Kato vs United Empire (TJP, Francesco Akira & Jakob Austin Young)

1*B6fj9Mfxc24K9ZQRWTSdBQ.jpeg

Before Catch 2/2 collide with Ninja Mack and DKC in a critical campaign closing bout, United Empire seek to assert tag dominance tonight. Can they set themselves up for a successful weekend?

2nd Match: Jude London, Paris De Silva & Katsuya Murashima vs BULLET CLUB (Taiji Ishimori, Robbie X & Gedo)

1*2P2PpHmhrmGgGbuAc6G3uQ.jpeg

The Velocities’ debut tour will come to an end Saturday in Nagoya, and they want to end up on a high speed high. Robbie X wants the same alongside Taiji Ishimori; who will gain the upper hand in this preview?

1st match: Masatora Yasuda vs Daiki Nagai

Singles record: 0–0–17
1*cQZlMe28i-ap_9J8mvgN4A.jpeg

The Masatora Yasuda and Daiki Nagai Young Lion rival story continues with a singles encounter to kick off tonight. With the two young men brawling after the bell Wednesday in Niigata, it’s become clear that both are sick of ten minute draws. Can one or the other claim a win tonight?

Power Struggle (November 4) Full card, preview

Big November card sees moves made ahead of Tokyo Dome

Just two months before Wrestle Kingdom 19 and Wrestle Dynasty in the Tokyo Dome, Power Struggle is traditionally the site of massive events that shape the rest of the year, and the biggest events to start the new one. Multiple title matches and the return of Kenny Omega highlight this year’s EDION Arena event.

Watch live in English on NJPW World!

Main event: IWGP World Heavyweight Championship- Zack Sabre Jr. vs Shingo Takagi

Singles record: 3–2 Sabre
1*gTElBqKoeVMEn8OxiF_cwQ.jpeg

The main event for Power Struggle 2024 is a rematch from the same event in 2021 as Shingo Takagi and Zack Sabre Jr. collide for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, but this time the roles of champion and challenger are reversed.

In 2021, Takagi was at the top of the world, a position well earned. Takagi had claimed the IWGP World Heavyweight title in July, and would hold the gold through to the Tokyo Dome, becoming Tokyo Sports MVP in the process. Yet the flowers Shingo richly deserved did not come in the volume the Dragon would want. His time in the brightest of lights coming in the peak of the COVID pandemic, the roar of the crowd was denied Takagi during his peak main event run. Now Shingo wants another run, and his fifth NEVER Openweight Championship has become key to that chance. Shingo wants to carry his momentum as NEVER champion through Power Struggle and then on to the Tokyo Dome, where he plans to defend first the world title at Wrestle Kingdom 19 and then the NEVER belt at Wrestle Dynasty.

Certainly that would again cement Shingo Takagi as the world’s premier wrestler, but that’s a position that Zack Sabre Jr. currently holds. In February this year, ZSJ left the EDION Arena in Osaka having been labelled the best technical wrestler in the world by Bryan Danielson; now he returns to that building without the ‘technical’ qualifier. From the G1 to the World Heavyweight Championship to his homecoming at Royal Quest ‘it’s coming home’ has been a rallying cry since the summer, and one Sabre has delivered on with gusto. Yet now is the time for home to be wherever Sabre hangs his hat, and ZSJ wants to hang his own hat at the Tokyo Dome. Who will chart a path to the biggest weekend in professional wrestling as the field’s top champion?

8th Match: IWGP Global heavyweight Championship- David Finlay vs Taichi

1*b4ZPtjTPtKdnagPEWX57Ug.jpeg

It’s one year ago to the day since David Finlay destroyed the IWGP US and UK Championships, setting into motion the creation of a belt ‘made for him’, in the form of the IWGP Global heavyweight Championship. Despite doubt in the fanbase, Finlay has defined the young title throughout the year through a grittytitle win and in particular, a second reign of dominance. After defending against SANADA, he brought the title through the G1 with violent aplomb, before two more defences racked up against Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI saw his confidence and arrogance only grow.

It was in that arrogant state, fresh off mocking Goto’s children after they saw their father step up and fall short of the ‘Rebel King’, that Finlay called out someone who had no hope of challenging. Yuya Uemura, still out with a torn triceps and in no position to wrestle, could not answer Finlay’s call out, and the champion knew it- he did not expect Taichi to answer the call with a brutal Dangerous Backdrop. Now, after he encouraged his friend through injury and doubt to nearly take the title in the summer, the Holy Emperor will seek to do what SANADA did not at New Japan Soul, and become the fourth IWGP Global Champion.

7th Match: IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship- DOUKI vs Master Wato

Singles record: 3–1 Wato
1*GowwheXihsTu3PS8_UIIMA.jpeg

After capturing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship in June from El Desperado, and even before his title win, DOUKI has been able to defeat men he’s never beaten in the past, from Hiromu Takahashi to Taiji Ishimori to SHO. In so doing, he’s shaken any lingering perception of himself as an underdog, and is now set to truly define his era as junior heavyweight champion with a bold step into the future, but somebody else has the same goal.

After nine months away with a torn left ACL, Wato made his return to confront DOUKI after his latest defence at King of Pro-Wrestling. Wato has been tied to the junior heavyweight champion ever since his first appearance from excursion was interrupted by an attack from behind from Japones Del Mal- since then both men have stated that they feel responsible for building the next generation of junior heavyweight wrestling in New Japan. That will be done at Power Struggle, but who will take the helm?

6th Match: Super Jr. Tag League Final- Ichiban Sweet Boys (Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita) vs Catch 2/2 (TJP & Francesco Akira)

Tag record: 2–0 Catch 2/2
1*iLgJsWWCvUctoq31lf4tzA.jpeg

The finals of Super Junior Tag League 2024 pits A Block winner Kosei Fujita and Robbie Eagles against B Block winners Catch 2/2, TJP and Francesco Akira. While Fujita and Eagles had a relatively straightforward path to the finals with only one loss to former junior heavyweight tag champions Drilla Moloney and Clark Connors, it was a more complicated picture for Catch 2/2, who emerged from a six way tie heading into the final night to book their place to Osaka.

That being as it may, the 2023 tournament winners now have a chance to go back to back, becoming the first team to do so since Roppongi 3K. Fujita and Eagles will look to put a stop to that, with Fujita hungry to score the biggest accolade of his career. It could be a dominant night for TMDK across heavyweight and junior tag teams, and the IWGP World Heavyweight title to boot, but it should be noted that Ichiban Sweet Boys have never beaten Catch 2/2 in their two prior outings. Will it be third time lucky?

Adding to a tremendous event, Kenny Omega will make a special appearance. having recently reunited with Hiroshi Tanahashi, and being a key part of the huge event that will be Wrestle Dynasty on January 5, what will Omega say in his first NJPW event since New Year’s Dash 2023?

5th Match: IWGP Tag Team Championships- TMDK (Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls) vs United Empire (Great-O-Khan vs HENARE)

Tag team record: 1–1
1*zaFSUxLPDxVIZOrwvDw4Eg.jpeg

Shane Haste and Mikey Nicholls have been the models of fighting double champions as they hold both IWGP and NJPW STRONG tag titles. After defences in Ryogoku and London in October, the TMDK side must prepare for the Grizzled Young Veterans in Lowell on Friday, but first is a formidable task in Osaka on Monday.

Previoous World Tag League matchups have seen HENARE and Great-O-Khan beat the current IWGP Champions in the past. As the tag tournament is around the corner, O-Khan has declared that they and HENARE are ready to shwo their own fearsome tandem strength. Will the team of the KOPW 2024 Champion and former NEVER title holder take the IWGP gold?

4th Match: Shota Umino vs SANADA

Singles record: 2–0 SANADA
1*Gsg7SG5y3pzf1uK_Y95KKw.jpeg

While no championships are on the line between Shota Umino and SANADA in this special singles match, pride and the future just well might be. In the wake of Zack Sabre Jr. winning the IWGP World Heavyweight title at King of Pro-Wrestling, SANADA and Shingo Takagi both stepped up to challenge. While Takagi gets the main event spot tonight after SANADA fell short in London, the Roughneck has the confidence of the man who beat both of tonight’s main eventers in the G1, but the Ryogoku audience and potentially the IWGP committee are not convinced. Boos in Sumo Hall would be rendered irrelevant with a win feels Umino, but only if SANADA is sufficiently in the game.

Umino has decried SANADA’s radio silence and his traditional stoic nature for the last several weeks. While SANADA has never been the most talkative of competitors, one has to wonder whether his big gamble of challenging ZSJ for the IWGP World Heavyweight title at Royal Quest not paying off has hurt or changed the Just Five Guys member on a fundamental level. In flashes during the Super Jr. tag League, SANADA has snapped at his opponent, with a Skull End on the floor after a six man tag one night being followed by a post match brawl the next. It all comes down to this night in Osaka, but will SANADA retain his 2–0 record over Shota, and chart a different path to the Tokyo Dome?

3rd Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi & Boltin Oleg vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL & Ren Narita)

1*FlgXz_vDGV7Hq2Nq_5XxYg.jpeg

As Hiroshi Tanahashi’s retirement road beckons, the Ace has a date on January 4 2025 with EVIL in the Tokyo Dome. The King of Darkness and self proclaimed ‘President’, EVIL has declared he will make Tanahashi’s retirement come one year earlier than planned, and looks to start that process tonight alongside the freshly minted NJPW World TV Champion Ren Narita. Yet Tanahashi has big time backup in NEVER 6 Man Champion partner Boltin Oleg- can he deliver a powerful message to H.O.T tonight?

2nd Match: Dragon Dia, Ryusuke Taguchi, Tomoaki Honma & Toru Yano vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Yota Tsuji & Tetsuya Naito)

1*3Bedf6AUNnOWZbAuQi7Fiw.jpeg

Eight man tag team action will see the Skateboard Bros ride once more, for perhaps the final time for a while as Dragon Dia turns his attention back to home promotion DRAGONGATE. They’ll join Tomoaki Honma and Toru Yano to face an all star Los Ingobernables De Japon lineup. With World Tag league fast approaching, it’ll be interesting to see what teams LIJ fields this year and we might get an idea of that in this matchup or in post match comments.

1st Match: Katsuya Murashima, Paris De Silva, Jude London, Kevin Knight & KUSHIDA vs BULLET CLUB (Gabe Kidd, Clark Connors, Drilla Moloney, Robbie X & Taiji Ishimori)

1*3IuNxgcbffChZY8_VNfnJA.jpeg

A rabid BULLET CLUB side will form for ten man action in our opening tag match, and one with all eyes on the Super Junior Tag League final to come. Robbie X and Taiji Ishimori won’t live down their loss to Catch 2/2 that eventually knocked them out of contention on tiebreaks, while Connors and Moloney will hold that they beat the Ichiban Sweet Boys early in the tournament, so a win for the TMDK side will not sit well with them. Nor will it sit well with Gabe Kidd, who faces Kosei Fujita for the NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship Friday night in Lowell MA. What violent pace may be set in our first main card bout?

Kickoff Match: Shoma Kato, Capitan Suicida & Tiger Mask vs Ninja Mack, the DKC & YOH

1*VCRJCr6ajBtrK_mmUvqJmg.jpeg

A special early kickoff at 2:30 PM JST will see some of the high flying stars of Super Jr. Tag League back together for a six man bout that also sees a big opportunity with fresh opposition and partners for Shoma Kato.
