So after Toru Yano locked TAKA Michinoku in a dog cage....the stipulations for his KOPW match against Suzuki that will be voted on starting tomorrow will be:

A handcuff death match or.....a dog cage match:heston

New Year’s Golden Series Night 10 (February 13) Preview

All star tag headlines in Osaka

As NJPW rounds the corner into the last week of the New Year’s Golden Seriers, action hits Osaka on February 13, hitting EDION Arena for the first time in 2022 with an appropriately big main event.
Watch new Year’s Golden Series LIVE in English on NJPW World!

Main event: Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kazuchika Okada vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (Shingo Takagi & Tetsuya Naito)
ougon_20220213_08.jpg

In our main event, a preview of two championship matches in Sapporo next weekend, as Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi face Tetsuya Naito and SANADA. Following weeks of six man action, this is the first direct tag on the tour between champions and challengers for the IWGP United States and World Heavyweight Championships in Sapporo one week later.

The tag bout also comes in an important venue for all four of these men. Hiroshi Tanahashi knows what it’s like to lose big money matches in the month of February in EDION Arena, having lost the IWGP Heavyweight title to Jay White here in 2019, and famously to Okada in 2012. Consequently, SANADA scored one of the biggest wins of his career in this building in the 2019 G1 Climax when he beat Okada one on one for the first time in the EDION, while the partisan Osaka crowd has always had an interesting relationship with the ups and downs of Naito’s career. With so much connecting all four men to one another and to this town, this will be a heated match with a lot of personal pride at stake before Sapporo’s championship action.

7th Match: NEVER Openweight Championship Lumberjack Match: EVIL vs Tomohiro Ishii
Singles record: 9-2 Ishii of which championship matches: 1-1

ougon_20220213_07.jpg

The first Lumberjack Match in almost five years in NJPW sees Tomohiro Ishii get a rematch against EVIL from Wrestle Kingdom. That rematch came as a result of the manner in which EVIL secured his second NEVER title reign, coming as it did only after a near farcical level of HOUSE OF TORTURE interference that ensured Ishii could not retain his title even as YOH provided some level of assistance in the Tokyo Dome.

Indeed Ishii’s two career defeats at the hands of the King of Darkness have only arisen due to copious interference and underhandedness, but Ishii will not use that as an excuse, nor should he. Instead he will enlist members of CHAOS to act as lumberjacks and neutralise the threat that HOUSE OF TORTURE presents. With both sides theoretically even, EVIL will be forced to fight on his own merits- or since it was the champion himself that suggested the stipulation, does EVIL have something extra up his sleeve?

6th Match: Robbie Eagles vs Taiji Ishimori
Singles record: 2-0 Ishimori

ougon_20220213_06.jpg

With Flying Tiger set to defend the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag team Championships against BULLET CLUB’s Cutest tag team in Sapporo next weekend, Robbie Eagles returns to action to face Taiji Ishimori in a singles preview tonight. This match also marks Taiji Ishimori’s return to action after being away from the ring due to COVID protocols, and he’ll be looking to hit the ground running against a man he has a very good record against in Eagles.

Once upon a time, these two were partners in BULLET CLUB before El Phantasmo stepped in the middle, and Eagles found his true calling in CHAOS. Ever since, the Sniper of the Skies has been keen to get a definitive win over Ishimori, but the Bone Soldier’s own blend of speed and precision technical wrestling has always had the edge over Eagles to date. Does that change in Osaka?

5th Match: Tiger Mask vs El Phantasmo

ougon_20220213_05.jpg

As Robbie Eagles battles Taiji Ishimori, so Tiger Mask will take on El Phantasmo in Osaka. Despite having locked horns in tag action, as well as in a UK three way some years ago, this is the first singles meeting for ELP and Tiger Mask; it should come as no surprise that Phantasmo has zero to negative respect for the living legend.

At the Wrestle Kingdom press conference this past December, Phantasmo had the gall to attend wearing a Tiger Mask of his own, and daring to suggest that he would take the mantle of the ‘cutest Tiger Mask’ after defeating him to win the junior tag titles in the Tokyo Dome. That did not happen, and instead ELP was humiliated as the ‘secret weapon’ behind Sudden Death was revealed as a steel insole to his right boot. Tonight, Phantasmo must use his own considerable skill and wherewithal to try and defeat the junior heavyweight master; can he get it done?

4th Match: Ryusuke Taguchi, Master Wato & Toru Yano vs Suzuki-Gun (Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado & TAKA Michinoku)
ougon_20220213_04.jpg

With voting by now underway in the KOPW 2022 poll, a preview of Sapporo action will see Toru Yano and Minoru Suzuki do battle with handcuffs and dog cages most likely in tow. Meanwhile Master Wato and El Desperado lock horns for the first time since Friday’s IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship match in Sendai. With Ryusuke Taguchi intent on convincing his young partner to join him in a tag championship challenge come what may, will Team Six or Nine show their combined prowess, or will singles rivalry continue to consume Wato, with or without the gold?

3rd Match: Los Ingobernables De Japon (Shingo Takagi, BUSHI & Hiromu Takahashi) vs Suzuki-Gun (Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Taichi & DOUKI)
ougon_20220213_03.jpg
LIJ and Suzuki-Gun’s issues go back a long way, and the two factions have little need of a reason to battle one another. Shingo Takagi and Taichi have a good deal of previous, as do the junior heavyweight members of this match, but with all six looking to carve their own narrative out of the New year’s Golden Series and into Anniversary on March 1 and then the New Japan Cup, could this tag bout be the source of new issues brewing?

2nd Match: Togi Makabe vs Great-O-Khan
ougon_20220213_02.jpg

Originally scheduled as a tag team match, Jeff Cobb’s injuries have led to a singles contest between Togi Makabe and Great-O-Khan. After the disappointment of defeat at the hands of SANADA in the Tokyo Dome, United Empire’s Dominator seeks new drive and direction before the New Japan Cup gets underway March 2. Tonight he wants to make a declarative statement that he belongs in the field, and that he could well go the distance.

1st Match: CHAOS (Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI & YOH) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (Dick Togo, SHO & Yujiro Takahashi)
ougon_20220213_01.jpg

Kicking off the main card, CHAOS and HOUSE OF TORTURE will do battle in six man action. It’s likely all six will be seen later on as lumberjacks in Tomohiro ishii and EVIL’s battle for the NEVER gold, but this six man could see one team or the other help their charge in the semi main event get an edge by thinning the herd of lumberjacks later.

Kickoff Match: Satoshi Kojima, Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Ryohei Oiwa vs Yuji Nagata, Tomoaki Honma & Kosei Fujita
ougon_20220213_00.jpg

Veterans and Young Lions team in the kickoff match tonight. Fujita and Oiwa have gone to countless draws in singles action, but it’s likely that one of them will be on at least a winning team tonight. Just who will it be?

Main event went a little long IMO but was good shit for the most part. Seeing Okada and Tanahashi team together is still a trip and this was WAY better than Friday's show

New Year’s Golden Series night 11 (February 15) Preview

Korakuen Hall triple header sets up Sapporo finale

As the New year’s Golden Series enters its final week, contenders will be shaping up for major championship action in Sapporo, while fallout stays in the air from big events in Sendai and Osaka over the weekend.

Watch new year’s Golden Series live and FREE in English on NJPW World!

Main event: Elimination Tag Team Match: Toru Yano, Master Wato, Ryusuke Taguchi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Yuji Nagata vs Suzuki-Gun (Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado, Yopshinobu Kanemaru, Taichi & DOUKI)
ougon_20220215_07.jpg

Always chaotic, an elimination main event will see Toru Yano lead a team of five against Suzuki-Gun as he approached February 20’s KOPW 2022 match in Sapporo. With voting set to end on Valentine’s Day, it appears as if Yano’s Dog Cage Match has the advantage as stipulation, but will Yano himself have the advantage heading into Sapporo?

Meanwhile, after Master Wato fell just short of the IWGP Junior gold in Sendai, the champion continued to deal criticism toward his young challenger. Bad blood between the present and future of the division seems set to continue, while Ryusuke Taguchi continues to lobby for an IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship match for Team Six or Nine. As Kanemaru also joined a crowded ring in Osaka Sunday to state he and Desperado’s case for the gold, it seems like a four way match may be incoming. Surviving this main event war would be a big step toward that 69th tag championship for Taguchi, but is easier said than done.

6th Match: Kazuchika Okada & Togi Makabe vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (Tetsuya Naito & Shingo Takagi)

ougon_20220215_06.jpg

With just five days separating them from their Sapporo championship encounter, Kazuchika Okada faces his next challenger Tetsuya Naito in tag action, with El Ingobernable teaming with the man Okada took the title from in Shingo Takagi. Togi Makabe is Okada’s partner this evening; last time we were in Korakuen Hall, a Last of the Dragon was the end result for the Unchained Gorilla. Makabe wants to get even in the Hall, while the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion wants to assert his superiority over the number one contender.

In Osaka on February 13, Tetsuya Naito ended the night on top of the world. After success targeting the base of the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion early in the match, Naito would land a running Destino to Okada, before landing Valentia and the full Destino to pin Hiroshi Tanahashi. Naito has a clear gameplan in mind for Sunday in Sapporo, and Korakuen tonight will see the next step executed- unless the Rainmaker can find a much needed answer.

5th Match: CHAOS (Tomohiro Ishii & Hirooki Goto) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL & Dick Togo)
ougon_20220215_05.jpg

Two days removed from their NEVER Openweight Championship Lumberjack match, EVIL and Tomohiro Ishii lock horns tonight. With EVIL and Yujiro Takahashi set to challenge Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI for the IWGP Tag Team Championships in Sapporo February 19, and CHAOS hunting for the NEVER 6 Man Tag Team Championships the next night, CHAOS will be leaning on their fluid teamwork tonight.

Two on two, and three on three aside, in Osaka, EVIL’s biggest detractors would learn that EVIL can get the job done one on one. When a Lumberjack Matc semi main event saw the outside distractions laid out at ringside, the closing quarter of the bout was all EVIL vs Tomohiro Ishii, and saw the King of Darkness emerge with a well justified victory. Will it be a different man who teams with Dick Togo tonight, or will it be old habits dying hard?

4th Match: CHAOS (YOH & YOSHI-HASHI) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (Yujiro Takahashi & SHO)
ougon_20220215_04.jpg

The other halves of the battling CHAOS and HOUSE OF TORTURE contingents do tag battle in the third match of the night. In Sendai, SHO pulled every last disgraceful tactic out of the drawer to defeat YOH, via wrenches, chair shots, belt strikes and copious interference. YOSHI-HASHI’s return in Osaka helped CHAOS to a six man win, but this was of very little consolation to YOH, with much still undone. It’s safe to say that ill feeling definitely remains between YOH and SHO, and that this will be a wild affair.

3rd Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tomoaki Honma & Ryohei Oiwa vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (SANADA, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI)

ougon_20220215_03.jpg

Prior meetings between Hiromu Takahashi and Kosei Fujita in the first part of the series saw the Time Bomb have his fun with Ryohei Oiwa and his Young Lion partner Kosei Fujita. Hiromu would put up some New Year’s money for the young men in a friendly wager, in fact. Tonight though, the stakes for this six man battle are somewhat higher, with Hiroshi Tanahashi and SANADA locking up before their February 19 IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship match. Sunday in Osaka, Tanahashi was left looking at the lights, and is in need of reasserting himself to SANAAD and the world at large before Saturday. Can he do just that in this six man?

2nd Match: Kosei Fujita, Tiger Mask, Satoshi Kojima & Robbie Eagles vs BULLET CLUB (Taiji Ishimori, El Phantasmo, Jado & Gedo)
ougon_20220215_02.jpg

Eight man tag team action will see Flying Tiger and BULLET CLUB’s Cutest Tag Team lock horns in advance of their tag title match in Sapporo this weekend. In singles clashes in Osaka, Tiger Mask managed to get a win over El Phantasmo via disqualification, while Robbie Eagles scored his own first ever singles win against Ishimori by submission.

After the match however, it seemed as if a straight tag team match in Sapporo for the IWGP Jr. tag belts will now be taking place in a crowded eight man environment. A four way seems to be the situation with Team Six or Nine and Suzuki-Gun added, but before that another crowded eight man environment will see two teams of four go to battle.

1st match: Great-O-Khan vs Yuto Nakashima
ougon_20220215_01.jpg

The night starts with Yuto Nakashima battling Great-O-Khan. Nakashima is back in the ring after taking a week off as a precautionary measure, after O-Khan’s forearm knocked the Young Lion out for a quick pinfall on February 7. Will the Dominator be equally savage tonight? Or will Nakashima find an answer?
