Best of the Super Jr. Night 10 (May 28) Preview

Three matches to go as tournament heads to Chiba

星取表_ENBOL-5.png

After just one day’s break to try and recover from damage incurred on a demanding three day Korakuen Hall stretch, BOSJ 29 hits Makuhari Messe in Chiba on May 28. With the finals Friday June 3 in Nippon Budokan looming, it is crunch time for all concerned on a tense Saturday evening.
Watch ALL of Best of Super Jr. 29 LIVE in English on NJPW World!

Main event- B Block: DOUKI (3-3) vs El Desperado (4-2)
Singles record: 2-0 Desperado

BOSJ_0528_10.jpg

A Suzuki-Gun derby in our main event sees the third singles meeting between El Desperado and DOUKI. The two competitors history goes back to competing together in Mexico almost a decade ago, and circled back together when an injury to Desperado allowed DOUKI to enter the BOSJ tournament in 2019. In the intervening three years, DOUKI has improved from one win in his debut year to three in 2021, and already in 2022. Yet in the pre-tournament press conference, Desperado would call out DOUKI for not improving enough to defeat deathmatch legend Jun Kasai when the two met before BOSJ start. Calling out DOUKI’s past in the Perros Del Mal stable in Mexico, Desperado declared that DOUKI would ‘lose like a b*tch’ leading to the two going nose to nose. DOUKI will be fighting with every bit of pride tonight, exactly what Desperado wants from his teammate and friend.

9th Match- A Block: Hiromu Takahashi (3-3) vs Alex Zayne (4-2)
BOSJ_0528_09.jpg

At six and eight points, a critical meeting for Hiromu Takahashi and Alex Zayne will see both go for broke in our semi main event. Zayne and Hiromu have take very different paths to be in the BOSJ 29 tournament, but at a similar age, and have a similar wild charisma and enigmatic in ring style. Zayne earned Hiromu’s respect before tournament start thanks to his activity in the US, but can he earn two points from the Time Bomb, potentially eliminating the three time winner in the process?

8th Match- B Block: Robbie Eagles (3-3) vs El Lindaman (4-2)

BOSJ_0528_08.jpg

Robbie Eagles and El Lindaman head to Murakami Messe very much in the hunt for a Nippon Budokan spot. Eagles improved to six points after his main event war with El Phantasmo Thursday while El Lindaman moved up to eight in victory against Wheeler Yuta. Lindaman might have seen in Thursday’s main event a different ELP to the one he dismissed before tournament start, and who tricked his way to victory over the G-REX Champion; Lindaman was similarly dismissive of Eagles’ abilities before the BOSJ began, but on a high after an all time classic victory Thursday will Eagles make the #STRONGHEARTS member eat his words?

7th Match- B Block: TJP (3-3) vs El Phantasmo (4-2)
Singles record: 2-0 Phantasmo

BOSJ_0528_07.jpg

After Thursday’s loss toRobbie Eagles, El Phantasmo is still riding high at the top end of B Block on eight points as he heads into the final third, but it’s a spot he has to share, and with a crowd of competition right behind. His opponent tonight is one he has wrestled before in TJP, but with their singles meetings over the British Cruiserweight Championship and then the Super J-Cup in 2019 were before a considerable amount of progression and transformation from both men. Despite his even record of 3-3, TJP is a danger to any and every competitor remaining, and while his own hopes of reaching the finals still remain, he’ll do everything in his power to deprive Phantasmo of his.

6th Match- B Block: Master Wato (2-4) vs Wheeler Yuta (3-3)
BOSJ_0528_06.jpg

Wato must win
At four points with three matches left, Master Wato’s hopes of the finals are slimmer than most, but the onus will be on the IWGP Junior Heavyweight tag champion to learn, progress and improve as well as win out. He’ll get just such an education and opportunity tonight opposite Wheeler Yuta, a competitor who, at the same age as Wato, has been able to undergo his own masterclasses opposite a wide range of trainers and coaches. As it seems as if Yuta has been able to apply his intertextual learning in a more focused sense than Wato, but the blue haired prodigy’s ability to surprise with dangerous strikes and submissions can catch anyone unawares. Both will look to up each other’s game here tonight in Makuhari.

5th Match- A Block: Ace Austin (5-1) vs SHO (3-3)
BOSJ_0528_05.jpg

After Thursday night’s champion vs champion clash with Taiji Ishimori ended with a disputable call but one in the X Division champ’s favour, Ace Austin is at ten points, two clear at the top of A block as he faces SHO. With HOUSE OF TORTURE backup against Ryusuke Taguchi and Hiromu Takahashi ensuring the Murder Machine is still in the hunt, he will present a difficult challenge for Austin tonight, but the Inevitable is very capable of using some literal aces up his sleeve.

4th Match- A Block: Ryusuke Taguchi (1-5) vs YOH (3-3)
Singles record: 2-1 Taguchi

BOSJ_0528_04.jpg

Taguchi is mathematically eliminated
While YOH remains in the hunt in A Block, he must head into this bout with the already eliminated Ryusuke Taguchi with some amount of trepidation. After all, YOH has never pinned the Coach, his one victory over Taguchi coming as a result of a countout in the UK four years back in the 2018 British J Cup. After YOH has really turned a corner and tapped into a newfound, genuine self-assuredness in this tournament though, could it be that YOH finally breaks his domestic duck against Taguchi tonight?

3rd Match-B Block: Titan (1-5) vs BUSHI(3-3)
BOSJ_0528_03.jpg

Titan is mathematically eliminated
A collision of masked maestros in the third bout of the evening sees the six pointer BUSHI fight to stay in the hunt against the mathematically eliminated Titan. After spectacular performances throughout the tour, Titan will be frustrated at his early elimination from B block contention, and with a theoretical best of eight points, will do everything in his power to reach that mark and close out the tour strong. After an impressive mid tournament stretch meanwhile, BUSHI is in good shape, just one win off the pace in the group and with a victory over joint leader El Desperado. Titan has consistently had BUSHI’s number in tag meetings over the years, but will that be the case one on one?

2nd Match: Clark Connors (3-3) vs Taiji Ishimori (4-2)
BOSJ_0528_02.jpg

Having dropped his last two matches, and with a controversial call leading to a loss to Ace Austin Thursday, Taiji Ishimori is likely to be in a foul mood heading into Makuhari Messe. The usually in control Bone Soldier could be prone to error then as he faces a Clark Connors riding the high of a three match win streak. Most recently that includes a dominant performance over Yoshinobu Kanemaru, who himself was able to beat Ishimori and add to his legendary curse. While tiebreaks make a path to the final difficult for Connors, he could score the biggest win of his career tonight and take a giant leap toward the Budokan.

1st Match: Yoshinobu Kanemaru (2-4) vs Francesco Akira (2-4)

BOSJ_0528_01.jpg

Both must win
At four points, Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Francesco Akira are all but out of the running, but a crowded top of the block tie could potentially work to one man’s advantage. Kanemaru especially has high ticket wins over Hiromu Takahashi and Taiji Ishimori to his credit, and will be very aware that all hope is not lost. First though, a win in our opening bout tonight is required, and is one that both will be putting all they have into obtaining.

Best of the Super Jr. night 11 (May 29) Preview

Penultimate league night in Ota

May 29 sees the penultimate night of Best of the Super Jr. league action in Ota-ku Prefectural Gymnasium. With the pinch being felt, both block participants wioll be setting themselves up to try and soar to glory in the Nippon Budokan Friday.
Watch ALL of Best of the Super Jr. 29 LIVE in English on NJPW World!

Main Event- B Block: Robbie Eagles (4-3) vs El Desperado (5-2)
Singles record: 3-1 Desperado

BOSJ_0529_10.jpg

Eagles must win.
A 3-1 singles record for Desperado over Robbie Eagles suggests form is in the favour of the ten point El Desperado tonight in this critical main event. Yet the one win on the ledger for Robbie Eagles itself came under the most critical and significant circumstances. Few bet on the Sniper of the Skies as he headed into Wrestle Grand Slam in the Tokyo Dome last July, but Eagles would endure Desperado’s agonising assault to the knee, and responded in kind, eventually securing a tapout victory to claim the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

Though Desperado regained the gold in November 2021 at Power Struggle, the lesson had clearly been delivered that Eagles can win big when the stakes are highest, and beat Desperado in the process. After already picking up a main event win over nemesis El Phantasmo, now he seeks to make a huge stride toward the final tonight in Ota.

9th Match- A Block: Francesco Akira (3-4) vs Taiji Ishimori (5-2)
BOSJ_0529_09.jpg

Akira must win
Francesco Akira heads toward the close of his first NJPW tournament with a rocky 3-4 record. Though his negative win:loss ratio and (as near as could be) elimination from the tournament are a source of diappointment, his explosive pace and aggression has given him a brace of victories. Now he could earn the biggest win possible by polishing off the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion. With Ishimori at ten points, that win would put Ishimori on the bubble heading into the last night on Tuesday, and Akira would like nothing more than to light that fire underneath the Bone Soldier, while hoping for a lot of help and a sizable tie at the top.

8th Match- A Block: Yoshinobu Kanemaru (2-5) vs SHO (4-3)
Singles record: 2-0 Kanemaru

BOSJ_0529_08.jpg

With SHO and by extension HOUSE OF TORTURE at eight points and a threat to the finals in the Budokan Friday, it’s fairly safe to say that Heel Master Yoshinobu Kanemaru will reassume his position from last year’s tournament as Babyface Master as he seeks his third straight singles win over the Murder Machine. Kanemaru’s Korakuen success in 2021 was his second victory over SHO in the Hall, and now in the larger scale of Ota-ku he wants to make it three whether or not his own spot in the finals. However many tricks H.o.T have up their sleeve, they are unlikely to show anything the Heel Master hasn’t seen, or invented before; can Kanemaru stop SHO tonight?

7th Match- B Block: Wheeler Yuta (4-3) vs El Phantasmo (5-2)
BOSJ_0529_07.jpg

Yuta must win
With two points separating the 4-3 Wheeler Yuta from the block leading El Phantasmo, this match could seal the fate of both men as they head into the final night Tuesday. With a grueling main event loss to Robbie Eagles followed by a hard fought win against TJP, Phantasmo is hurting as much if not more than any of the twenty in the tournament; Yuta bounced back after his loss against El Lindaman in Korakuen Hall to get past Master Wato, and will fight with all he has to stay in the running.

6th Match- A Block: Ryusuke Taguchi (2-5) vs Ace Austin (5-2)

BOSJ_0529_06.jpg

Taguchi is mathematically eliminated
Still at the top of A Block at ten points albeit shared with Ishimori, it’s safe to say that Ace Austin has represented IMPACT and the X Division Championship to the utmost thus far. Yet his position in the finals on Friday is far from secure. Should he fall to the four point holding Taguchi, and especially if the Coach makes use of his more… unique offensive arsenal, a stunning run for Austin could end in disgrace.

5th Match- A Block: Clark Connors (3-4) vs Hiromu Takahashi (4-3)
BOSJ_0529_05.jpg

Connors must win
After a win over Alex Zayne saw him to eight points, Hiromu Takahashi’s back is still against the wall as he faces his penultimate opponent in Clark Connors. While Connors’ three match win streak ended against Ishimori in Makuhari, he could hav a convoluted back door to the finals an all hope is not quite lost. Hiromu is well aware of the threat Connors’ brute strength and phenomenal conditioning present, and an extra two points is in no way guaranteed tonight in Ota. Can he keep hopes of a history making fourth trophy win alive?

4th Match- B Block: BUSHI (3-4) vs TJP (3-4)
BOSJ_0529_04.jpg

Both men are mathematically eliminated
At six points and three wins off the minimum winning pace, BUSHI and TJP are now just playing for pride, and to make a statement for the months to come in the junior division. Two master strategists with a wealth of painful offence, who emerges on top tonight?

3rd Match: YOH (3-4) vs Alex Zayne (4-3)

BOSJ_0529_03.jpg

YOH must win
At six and eight points respectively, it’s put up or shut up for the must win YOH and Alex Zayne. With YOH’s classical style and cognitive approach compared to Alex Zayne’s charismatic dynamism, this is a big styles clash on paper; whose wrestling philosophy proves stronger?

2nd Match- B Block: Titan (2-5) vs DOUKI (3-4)
BOSJ_0529_02.jpg

Both men are mathematically eliminated
After an emotional loss to El Desperado, DOUKI is out of the running, but as he fights to get results in this results driven world, he again faces an opponent with greater personal significance than just another potential two points on the board. As DOUKI toiled on the independent scene in Mexico, Titan was in the early years of honing his trade under the bright lights of CMLL. DOUKI’s independent spirit rails against the star; now they finally face off one on one, will Titan show a difference in levels, or will DOUKI strike a blow for, in his words ‘the CMLL haters’?

1st Match- B Block: Master Wato (2-5) vs El Lindaman (4-3)
BOSJ_0529_01.jpg

Lindaman must win
Master Wato has had a mixed Best of the Super Jr en route to points and mathematical elimination. Lindaman has joined several critical voices of Wato’s, but offered that the hontai star could make the pieces fall together, and suggested he could make Wato do just that in this opening bout. Then again, at eight points and needing a win to stay in the hunt, it may be all business for the G-REX Champion as he fights to stay in the conversation before the final league matches Tuesday.

You heavyweight what the fuck Ishimori towards Conners :lol

I swear everytime I see Ishimori he reminds of Ernie Reyes JR aka Keno from TMNT 2. Bushi choking out Titan with the Mexican Flag what a Heel.

Titan's Springboard DDT is so sweet when he gets it done. Only Eddie Guerrero to me had a better one back in his day.

At least Taguchi is wearing different Underwear when he wants to drop it it would be so much funnier if he wore the same Underwear everytime though. Oh my God I forgot Momo Watanabe Months ago put something in her Kickpad and kicked AZM so hard she put her out for Weeks because it landed it on her Nose with authority.

Like I thought SHO beats Ace Austin:wtf

No worries though he's not winning the Block. He can go jerk with his Wrench in the Corner. Hopefully Kanemaru beats him tomorrow.
