IWGP Heavyweight Championship
Kenny Omega(c) V Hiroshi Tanahashi

On the 12th of August 2018 the “Ace” Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated the “Golden Star” Kota Ibushi. In the final of that year’s G1 Climax tournament. As a result of this victory, he aka Tanahashi had earned himself a spot in the main event of the following year’s Wrestle Kingdom ppv event.

His opponent would be whoever the reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion was at the point in time. That would be the “Cleaner” Kenny Omega who captured the title back at the Dominion ppv back in June 2018.

Both champion and challenger would successfully retain both their certificate and championship respectively in later 2018. So the match was set in stone, Omega© V Tanahashi for the IWGP HW Championship. At the first NJPW ppv of 2019 aka Wrestle Kingdom 13.

IWGP Intercontinental Championship - No Dq
Chris Jericho(c) V Tetsuya Naito

Back at the 2018 New Year's Dash pay per view event, Chris Jericho set his sights on the leader of Los Ingobernables De Japon aka Tetsuya Naito. Later on in the year Naito defeated then IWGP Intercontinental Champion Minoru Suzuki(c) to become the new champion. On the second night of the 2018 Wrestling Dontaku ppv, Jericho once again made an appearance and attacked Naito.

Making his intentions clear he wanted some IWGP gold but more importantly he wanted the Intercontinental Championship. Naito accepted his challenge for a title match and it took place at Power Struggle, where Jericho was able to get the victory.

As if taking his title away from him wasn't bad enough and to add insult to injury, Jericho would set his sights on the rest of LIJ. As result of Jericho's actions, NJPW management decided that he would defend the title against Naito at Wrestle Kingdom 12, in a No Dq match.

IWGP JR Heavyweight Championship
Kushida(c) V Taiji Ishimori

Back in October 2018 at the Road to Power Struggle a Jr Heavyweight tag team match took place, this wasn't just any tag team encounter. No sir this was part of the 2018 Super Junior Tag League tournament and it saw Bullet Club represented by Taiji Ishimori and Robbie Eagles.

Take on and defeat the duo of the reigning IWGP Jr Heavyweight Champion Kushida(c) and Chris Sabin to get the victory. Something of note took place with this victory as Ishimori got the pin on Kushida, leaving the possibility of a championship opportunity somewhere down the line.

At the Power Struggle ppv a seemingly crutch needing Ishimori was in the corner of the BC when they faced Great Bash Heel and Kushida in six man action. Ishimori revealed that he faked the injury and then hit Kushida with a crutch which was unseen by the ref and the led to a BC victory.
Having had enough of the back and fourth between the two men, NJPW management announced a title match for Wrestle Kingdom 13 between the two.

Number One Contender - IWGP HW Championship
Jay White V Kazuchika Okada

After "Switchblade" Jay White seemed to accept an invitation from then Bullet Club leader Kenny Omega in early 2018. Only for him to immediately reject and turn on Omega and left him laying inside the squared circle, White explained his actions. And instead of joining the Bullet Club, he was in fact going to be the newest member of the Chaos stable instead. At first the addition of White to Chaos seemed to be a good fit but like all good things it had to reach it's conclusion.

Step by step White started to display a more heelish attitude for the remainder of 2018, to the point that the stable's leader aka the "Rainmaker" Kazuchika Okada involved himself in the situation. Okada tried to make White see sense but White couldn't or wouldn't hear it, and then proceeded to lay Okada out with the Blade Runner.

White would end up not only joining the Bullet Club, he would become the faction's new leader and this due the ire of Chaos and Okada. NJPW Management announced that it would be Okada versus White at Wrestle Kingdom, the winner of the match. Would be crowned the number one contender to the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

And the duo of Sho and Yoh aka two thirds of the Chaos adjacent group Roppongi 3K. Both LIJ and Roppongi 3K would mange to defeat the champions in non-title matches, as a result of these victories. REV PRO UNDISPUTED BRITISH HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
TOMHIRO ISHII(C) VS ZACK SABRE JR

The "Stone Pitbull" and Chaos member Tomohiro Ishii defeated the leader of Suzuki-Gun and then REV PRO Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Minoru Suzuki(c). Back in October 2018 to become the new champion, he aka Ishii would manage to defeat Suzuki in a rematch for the gold.

Only to be attacked by another member of Suzuki-Gun in the form of Zack Sabre Jr. Ishii went to NJPW management and demanded a title match between himself and ZSJ for Wrestle Kingdom and they made the match official.

IWGP UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP
CODY RHODES(C) V JUICE ROBINSON

In July 2018, Juice Robinson defeated the then IWGP United States Champion Jay White(c) to capture the title. After seeing off White and several other challengers to his reign as champion, Robinson would lose the title to Cody Rhodes at Fighting Spirit Unleashed. A rematch between the two men for the gold was made official for Wrestle Kingdom by NJPW management.

IWGP NEVER OPENWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
KOTA IBUSHI(C) V WILL OSPREAY

The "Aerial Assassin" Will Ospreay was originally scheduled to challenge the "Golden Star" and current IWGP NEVER Openweight Champion Kota Ibushi(c) back in 2018. At the Power Struggle pay per view event however that match would never take place. As Ospreay would find himself on the shelf as a result of an injury, feeling robbed of the opportunity to have a great match. Ibushi went to NJPW management and suggested that the match take place at Wrestle Kingdom and they agreed.

IWGP TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
GUERRILLAS OF DESTINY(C) VS LOS INGOBERNABLES DE JAPON VS YOUNG BUCKS

The final match added to the card of the Wrestle Kingdom 13 pay per view event regarded the IWGP Tag Team Championship. The encounter for the gold wouldn't be a regular men's division heavyweight tag team match.

This would be a three way tag team match with the defending champions. Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa aka the Guerrillas of Destiny(c) and two sets of challengers the first being EVIL and Sanada aka LIJ and the other being the Young Bucks.
