Why was Schiano hired in the first place? Swear nobody on any level can figure out how to hire a football coach. "Hey, this guy has had success, maybe he can get something out of our guys, too!" Not "Hey, this guy was .500 in college, lets bring him up to coach our mentally weak football team!" Damn.
They had a deal in place to hire Chip Kelly and he backed out to stay at Oregon. Instead of calmly and rationally analyzing the situation, they make the Schiano hire completely out of left field. They had talked to a handful of other guys, including Chudzinksi (Carolina OC now Browns HC) and Bengals DC Mike Zimmer, and not talked to Schiano, but I guess the Kelly thing really had them wanting a college guy for some reason.
I believe 4 days passed from the time Kelly bailed to the time they panicked into the Schiano hire. Here is an article I remember reading at the time completely lambasting the Bucs organization and basically telling everyone how obvious it would be that the Schiano hire is going to be a crash and burn disaster.
Greg Schiano? He isn't qualified for this. The things he did well at Rutgers -- getting the community to believe, recruiting, taking academics seriously -- don't matter in the NFL. I love when unconventional moves work in the NFL, but this is beyond unconventional. I don't know how you win the NFC South with a guy who had 11 years to win the Big East and never did.
