[Tokyo Sports] Tetsuya Naito reveals that his annual salary has been cut significantly by 24% in this year's contract renewal.

Tetsuya Naito, who is set to challenge IWGP world heavyweight champion Kazuchika Okada at the Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center on February 20, said he received his first big pay cut in his career.

He renewed his contract this year on January 17th and is said to have been offered a pay cut for the first time in his career. It is an astonishingly large pay cut of 24%.
Last year's poor performance seems to have affected him, and he certainly lost momentum as a single wrestler due to his loss of the IWGP heavyweight & IWGP Intercontinental title last year, elimination in the first round of the NEW JAPAN Cup, and injury absence in the G1 climax.

He said, "Because I didn't leave anything behind in the sense of outcome. Due to the influence of COVID-19, the audience is decreasing, and I was expected to offer a salary cut, but I didn't expect this much... Even I got nervous about this. When I saw the amount offered, I literally opened my right eye with my thumb and index finger," he recalled his nightmare-like renewal.

He continued, “Next year, I want to take advantage of a higher salary than this cut. After all, it means that even if Okada won the G1, there was no rain of money in New Japan. If this happens, I have no choice but to make it come down on my own.” He plans to continue leaving achievements that everyone will recognize, starting with winning the IWGP world heavyweight title.

It became clear why he desperately wanted to resume interviews at family restaurants, which had been stopped due to the Covid-19, he furtively left his bank account number in the sense of sending money after the call was over, even though there would be no coverage fee for the phone interview…

Voices of wrestling - Wrestle Kingdom Night 3 notes , as one would expect the decision making on the show was loaded with politics, right down to the entrance order in the matches, in which the New Japan side demanded to enter last. The NOAH side, likely due to a full understanding that it would be a non-negotiable, agreed to New Japan winning more matches. However, NOAH insisted that Taiji Ishimori and Yoshinobu Kanemaru lose. Gedo agreed to have both men on a losing side, but fought against Ishimori losing a fall due to an upcoming title match on the next tour. New Japan had no issue with Kanemaru dropping a fall, but preferred he lose to a heavyweight.

Keiji Muto refused to make his ring entrance before Kaito Kiyomiya, causing changes to the production. Muto haggled about match structure as well. Hiroshi Tanahashi offered to work with a heel edge, deferring to Muto and his status as a legend to establish him as the babyface, suggesting working over Muto's knees to set up a Kiyomiya hot tag, which would give Kiyomiya shine since he was taking the fall at the end of the match. Muto rejected this, instead suggesting Kiyomiya take the heat, with Muto receiving the hot tag.

One source indicated "Nobody can argue (with) Mutoh-san. He is Keiji Mutoh."

Muto rejected other ideas, including Kiyomiya breaking up a key Tanahashi pin attempt late in the match, with Muto insisting on kicking out himself or removing the spot entirely, with the obvious speculation being that Muto did not want to be perceived as visually defeated by Tanahashi.

Typical Keiji, went full 'that doesn't work for me, brother'. That's just funny at this point.

Naito isn't the only wrestler taking a pay cut. The company is offering pay cuts to the other wrestlers whose contracts are up this year, anywhere between 10-15%

In celebration of the promotion's 50th anniversary, NJPW has announced the return of another tour.

NJPW Hyper Battle 2022 will be a four-show tour taking place from Sunday, April 3 to Saturday, April 9. It's the first time the tour has been held in 18 years.

The show dates and locations are:
  • Sunday, April 3 -- Act City Hamamatsu in Hamamatsu, Japan
  • Monday, April 4 -- Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan
  • Thursday, April 7 -- Tokorozawa Municipal Gymnasium in Tokorozawa, Japan
  • Saturday, April 9 -- Sumo Hall in Tokyo, Japan
Each show will be held in accordance with the COVID-19 policy of the host prefecture.

NJPW is currently in the midst of its New Year's Golden Series tour, which also returned in celebration of the company's 50th anniversary. It will continue on Sunday, February 6 after NJPW had to cancel or postpone its last four January shows due to COVID-19.

NJPW's 50th anniversary show and the 2022 New Japan Cup tournament are set to take place before the Hyper Battle tour begins.
